  • We had so much fun with our Aerogarden experiment that Daniela decided to do another one with Darlingtonia, the California pitcher plant. She’ll show you how she set up her garden and talk a little bit about Darlingtonia growth habits.

      Sadly this style of Aerogarden didn’t provide strong enough light which was very shocking!

    I live in Miami, FL and I found that darlingtonia californica to be relatively easy only for me to care sadly it died because I was out of town for almost 2 months and my grandma with no experience in any carnivorous plants let alone Darlingtonia couldn’t keep up the ice production so it died either way surprised it did as well as it did for as long as it lived in this climate

    Will cobra Lillie’s grow well in mountainous regions like Calgary?

      I think they should do well there. They can tolerate some snow but will need protection from very deep, prolonged snow potentially.

    I was curious if pings grow well with self watering pots. Have you tried it ?

    • @California_Carnivores

      A lot of the self watering pots we’ve tried don’t seem to wick quite enough moisture up and into the soil but it’s always worth experimenting with!

    How y’all you keep the water really cold in that arogarden?

    • @ryanhodin5014
      @ryanhodin5014 Před 2 lety +1

      The water doesn't need to be *that* cold for Darlingtonia - Really, the reason we use such cold water in cultivation for them is so the water is cold enough to cool all the medium down - If you pour 40F water into 80F sphagnum, it might equalize around 60F - Which is on the upper end of where you want their roots (it'd be nice if it was cooler in the daytime...)
      So, if your temperature is much higher, you need colder water, and more water - Hence the ice cube kerfluffle. On the other hand, if your climate has a high of 70 and a low of 50, you're probably ok just pouring slightly cool water on the plant - Which is why different people report more or less luck with how to maintain cobras. They're sensitive like that.
      So the theory here is that an indoor plant probably has temperatures in the 65-75 range year round, all day, so it doesn't need a lot of cooling.
      I'm guessing that between the leca and the Aerogarden's aeration of the water tray, you then end up with a tray of water that's moving around with lots of airiness to it, so the roots get convective cooling action and good oxygen supply - Which are the two things that people generally agree Darlingtonia like (Live sphagnum being an excellent way to deliver both of these). And that's my take on it anyway... I'm sure CalCarn will send someone to correct me if I'm too horribly wrong!

      @@ryanhodin5014 wow thanks for the thorough explanation! Cleared a lot of confusion for me. I ordered one and will keep it in tray with cool water until I make a set up for it

    are you going to leave these indoor room temp watering? or use cool water for indoors?

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Před rokem

      They should be fine at indoor temps on most days because my house is air conditioned and doesn’t get too hot but on a crazy 115 degree days, I’ll add cool water because it’ll heat up for sure!

    I know these videos are experimental but what do you think the light power needs to be for the cobras in the aeogarden? I was looking at the aeogarden and the light power seems to be different on the different systems they sell. I want to try growing cobras (some from seeds) and not sure if I should just try to grow them next to my orchids or grow them inside where I know it will be much cooler. I am in south Mississippi and we get crazy hot but would love to grow them here and them be happy. To confess I'm a tad bit intimidated by them but love a challenge.

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Před 2 lety

      The lights are interesting because they are different but, in theory, if they can grow herbs, they should be able to grow carnivorous plants. So far the juries still out on the Aerogarden model in this video. The very traditional model in our frost Aerogarden video would work very well; more than enough light!

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Před 2 lety

      In your area, the Aerogarden would be a great way to grow the cobras! Just make sure to give them a cold winter dormancy. If you grow them from seed, you can skip the first 1-2 years of dormancy while they grow out

    You need to sort your audio out and cut the background noise out

    • @California_Carnivores
      @California_Carnivores  Před rokem

      Unfortunately we’re a working nursery first and video makers second so we can’t turn off the fans and swamp cooler when we shoot video, or have anyone stop what they’re doing. We do use microphones when we can but weirdly they sometimes pick up the background noises even more, or break quickly (probably due to the ambient moisture 😂) I understand our sound quality isn’t perfect but our care advice and plant knowledge is! We always say, we’re great with plants, okayish with technology 😂🤦‍♀️
