The Hague, Netherlands, City Tour

    The Hague is the second most-visited city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam because it's a city with many attractions and a large pedestrian zone where you can wander about in old historic lanes.
    Although Amsterdam is the nation's capital, almost all of the government is headquartered here with the parliament, and the prime minister and perhaps most famous as home of the International Court of Justice, a branch of the United Nations.
    This video is a practical guide for you showing exactly where are the main sites and where you should be walking to catch all of the highlights in your visit.
    You might think of the Hague as perhaps a modern city, as a government city and therefore maybe not so interesting to visit, but you'll find that it's fascinating. The Hague has got a rich collection of historic buildings, some of them dating back as much as to the 13th century, amazingly, and they have been restored and renovated and kept up to date. The government is located in this complex of very old buildings in the heart of town. And yet there's also a modern side to the city, a modern shopping mall, ultramodern skyscrapers and that wonderful pedestrian zone. So altogether you'll find The Hague has got a lovely variety of kinds of neighborhoods and attractions, historic sites, shopping areas, museums, and just friendly people everywhere, and everywhere, bicycles.
    The two closest main cities are Delft and Leiden, both of which make a good home base for visiting The Hague on a day trip, only 15 minutes away by train.

    I just moved back to Houston from The Hague around a year ago, and watched this video just for the trip down memory lane. I spent just over 2 of the best years of my life in that wonderful city, and would go back in a heartbeat. Most of the video is all around the neighborhoods and areas I spent most of my time, as I lived very near to the Noordeinde area in the Zeeheldenkwartier. Just a wonderful, safe, modern, and alive city that most folks just looking to punch their card in Amsterdam would overlook. And this video doesn't even mention the wonderful beach area all around Scheveningen. Great video, though, and an excellent trip down memory lane.

    This is simply another brilliant video in your current Dutch series. From what I can deduce there is a great amount of effort put into your productions and some solid physical effort !! As a matter of general interest do you write your own remarkable scripts ?
    So pleased that you are inviting intelligent local sound bytes from people who know the area. A great job well done -thank you Dennis.

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  Před 4 lety +11

      Thanks Richard, and about my scripts, yes I write them myself -- it's actually the most challenging part of the process, requiring lots of research. I do use information from various sources including the Tourist Information Office, Wikipedia, old guide books, various websites, and then after much reading I usually put it aside and narrative live, spontaneously while watching the scene. The final script is "spoken" rather than written, much of it based on my memories and experiences of being in the place. It is the final stage of my production in which I plan the trip, do the journey, shoot the video, come home and edit, then narrate. I'm glad you noticed.

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  Před 4 lety +12

      A big part of my training for writing the scripts has been working for 31 years as a tour guide, bringing groups to Europe and leading hundreds of walking tours, standing at places and talking about them to my groups. That also helped me figure out the best walking routes to take in the main sites, always central to my videos, providing practical advice for the traveler.

    Since the narrator sounds American : just want you to know that when I sat in my elementary class about 1956 or 57 at Decroly School, Boylestraat, The Hague, our school was informed that The Hague was no more the capital of the Netherlands. Instead it must have been Amsterdam whose population surpassed ours. So that is mainly why The Hague has all the government buildings and a beautiful palace with a huge garden. Amsterdam had a very old palace but it stood in the center of all the traffic. Enjoyed your show though. You showed many places we walked through. In fact, from our long street, we could see the tower of the Grote Kerk towering over Fahrenheitsrtaat and the other streets in the distance.

    16:51 those markets are a scam. you need to pay to get plastic coins and then you can get food. But usually its like 5 per coin which means that you'll be paying 10 euros for french fries. No thank you. Way too expensive especially when you're surrounded by food stores every where. Just go to Bram lol

      Thank you very much for that warning. They were not quite open when I was there, and I didn't see any way to pay for anything yet.

      @@denniscallan I may have been to hasty basing this on 16:42 2 munten = 2 coins. But the other stalls mention 5 euros and such. So sorry for that confusing mess. Anyhow these markets do exist and are often tourist traps. Mostly I see them in Delft.
