  • Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2014 | By train, bike, and boat, we visit the top Dutch sights outside of Amsterdam: from Haarlem to Rotterdam, and from Delft to the Zuiderzee. Along the way, we enjoy charming towns with fragrant cheese markets, soggy polderland, mighty dikes, and windmills both new and old. @@zaylek6568 the Dutch are very tolerant so speaking English is fine. If you want to be stubborn and speak English for the rest of your life here, you can do that. I would strongly recommend learning Dutch though. I was stubborn to begin with and it cost me lots of difficulty along the way. There are lots of resources such as babbel, italki, duolingo as well as lots of free language learning groups that you'll find almost anywhere.
      If you want to become a citizen, then you'll Need to learn Dutch to a moderate level though. The good news is if you speak English then Dutch is quite easy to learn. Good luck in the future!

      Actually a lot of those buildings are rented out and not owned by the people who live there.
      If you own such a place there are many regulations up to the color and design of your front door. As we call it here: a protected city view (beschermd stadsgezicht). On the insight of the building you are allowed to change to your liking as long as it has no negative structural consequences.

Such a beautiful country with beautiful people. So kind-hearted and helpful. Almost all of the population that we'd come across spoke English, and fluent English at that too. The country boasts some fantastic museums. We explored Amsterdam many a time and explored a lot of the city. We explored some cities other than Amsterdam, of course; in fact, the exact same ones shown in the video, minus Zuiderzee. I think it's also worth mentioning how stunning the beaches are. Unfortunately, didn't get to swim, because it was the final day of our trip there, but the beaches were absolutely clean. I feel the beaches there are a little underestimated. I'm American and my gf is Dutch, and I recently got to go to the Netherlands and visit her family for the first time and I got to say, Dutch people are some of the kindest people I have ever gotten the experience to meet. The country itself is just so beautiful, I can't wait to go back. I guess it's kind of a coincidence my gf is Dutch because I have a lot of Dutch ancestors, so I've always been fascinated by the history and culture of the Netherlands. I was there for 2 months so I got to see a lot but I still have way more to see and experience. I would absolutely love to live there some day. Amazing video!

      Mark R. I'll keep that in mind but I have to disagree about New York. NYC feels different from all other American cities with big avenues, everybody driving cars, no pedestrians, clean but empty boxy small downtown with big suburbs. Whereas, NYC is full of small alleys, cobblestone streets, old churches, old buildings, alive with diversity not only in the people, but the buildings and neighborhoods. The buildings are iconic, the street signs are iconic, the subway system is iconic, and each neighborhood is different. You have the artsy neighborhoods of lower Manhattan, and Brooklyn. The posh and classy neighborhoods around the central park. Then you have the real live immigrant neighborhoods with real authentic food and stuff (not tourist traps like the chinatown in london).
      You really have to be in NYC, experience all the little things to fall in love with it. If you just do the typical daily tour, then Yea that can be boring. I'm born and raised around this city and it is anything but boring.

    This video makes me want to visit. Though my family left The Netherlands for America in 1627 We've maintain some of the cultural traditions, Probably because we've always belong to the Dutch Reformed Church. Through it we still have the catechism and Confession. We also get to meet visiting Dutch people and those who have moved here. When we moved to the South there weren't any so we went to the Presbyterian Church. There are more recently arrived Dutch communities in Michigan. They've been here since the 19th century and came bringing a more traditional denomination with them. Culturally we still resemble the home folks. We are hard workers and thrifty. We're very organized and maintain a standard of cleanliness that's hard to find among other people. Perhaps someday.

      Not wanting to be a negative nancy and I agree it was a nice vid, but surely not a very well balanced representation of Dutch culture, just a nice tourist-report of the Holland-part of our nation.

      +SpeelMeneer Nice to meet you too.☺ So you're from Barneveld, Netherlands?😮 Barneveld is a beautiful town! Very charming too.😀☺ And I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed Californian women are attractive. I also believed Dutch women are also attractive, and beatiful too.😀
      And sometimes it gets a little bit boring here in California, because we almost don't have any elegant, beatiful old buildings and roads like in the Netherlands, and other countries in Europe.☺
      And I think the Netherlands is a beatiful Kingdom, and for me it'll be worth to visit because it caught my attention.😀😆

      ***** These videos are made for the tourists. Plus the spelling mistakes were very minor, you can excuse them.

    • @Adeeis
      @Adeeis Před 9 lety

      I am admitting to the spelling mistakes. But there was a 's' in place of 'z', and in many languages u pronounce 's' in 'z' sound if the comes in mid or till end of the word, especially in European languages. Just one letter which isnt changing sound, is a very minor mistake for non-native. Also there is a difference in British and American English, one uses 's' and other 'z' in for some words.

      The show is not fully for the guys who will eventually tour the place themselves. The rick steves tour books are for them who travel and there is much more detail in the book than there can be in just a 20 odd minute program.
      The tv show is for everyone, the books are for those who actually visit/ travel Europe from far.

    Perfect engineering. I think we still need to learn more from the Netherlands. Our capital city is drowning faster than any big cities in the world. Once big rain comes, flood everywhere!. Greetings from Jakarta, Indonesia.
