Soda bread was the first bread I ever baked. The fact that there's no yeast made it far less intimidating for me. Thanks for the lesson, Mr. McGrady.
Hi Dean, have you ventured further into making bread? Each loaf or roll is an adventure. Have you mastered the yeast breads yet?
I'm a novice to bread making, l had no idea bread could be baked without yeast, much less with no resting time. I will try it as soon as my bread supply is consumed.
we make it mostly in the form of soda farls over here in northern Ireland. Rolled out like a pizza then slice into 12, then cooked on a gridle 5 mins a side
He is such a sweet, humble being. I really enjoy watching him.
But he looks like a candidate for a heart attack, which I'd hate to see happen to him.

We’re a pretty mixed family, I’m Sicilian born in the US and my wife is from Japan, but we loves us come corned beef with carrots, potatoes and carrots.
Anyway, we make the beef in the stove top and I hated throwing away all that wonderfully flavored and salted broth, so one day I asked my wife to use the liquid in place of water the next time she made a batch of rice in the rice cooker.
The results were amazing.
I’m sitting here the morning after St. Paddy’s munching on some leftover soda bread. My brisket cured for two weeks and made fabulous corned beef. Thetyll be a lot of sandwiches for the next few days.
Hey chef! You absolutely MUST do a Sunday Roast video! As an American who lived in commonwealth countries for 4 years, I still dream about Yorkshire puddings doused in gravy 😍😍
Sunday roast coming soon Kelley
i love that you add history and additional information rather than just telling us the recipe and showing us how to make it!
As an Irish lady myself it's an honour to see this made by your sir. You are such an amazing chef and you bring such personality to the things you make. Thank you for sharing your talents with us.
It's a lovely sentiment but the words Irish and food go together like fish and bicycle! 🤮
@@thesolarengineer quite similar to how the words “British” and “polite” go together wouldn’t you say.
Baguetteman, easy to say, I know, but please don't let Keith's ignorance make you sink to his level.
I don't know if Keith is British, but I am, and I like to think I'm polite. 😊
@@thesolarengineer You obviously have no idea what your talking about.

Never realized Soda Bread was this simple. Will be giving it a go for sure!
Growing up in Ireland I always had soda farl, rather than soda bread. Fantastic toasted with lots(!) of butter.
That bread looked absolutely amazing! A dollop of butter and a slather of preserves would do it well 🥰🥰🥰
You have a lovely voice, Thank you.
✨💖✨My father was Irish, but was a little boy when my grandparents brought the family over from Ireland. My uncle had stories about the corning barrel at the local grocers (mind you, this was in the 1920s and then on into the depression. So my father didn’t have corned beef on holidays until he married my mom. She always called it Irish turkey, and served it every St. Patrick’s day. Then the stories would come out. But we always had a ton of Coleman’s mustard powder in the cupboard. When I got older, my father wanted me to learn to make soda bread, and I learned the same basic loaf you showed us here, though we usually had ours with tea. I always lightly tossed mine with a fork, just until it pulled together. As you show here, the secret is not to over handle it, or it can be a dreadfully dense lump. It’s a lovely, basic loaf that fills the heart with warmth. Thank you for sparking lovely memories of family long gone.
I save all my butter wrappers! They are great to grab and grease my pans and cooking trays! Easy to keep a whole bunch in the freezer! 💋👍🏼
I didn't think anything could beat Katz's deli in NYC but your corned beef sammie looks amazing.
That is the most simple and perfect soda bread I've ever seen and being Irish I love how you told about the traditions. Thank you Sir.
Oh my gosh, that corned beef and Irish soda bread just looks amazing!!!!!!!
I am English, not Irish but I do love corned beef. I make the Prince Charles soda bread recipe with malted granary flour. It is amazing too.
I made date and walnut soda bread yesterday. Very proud of myself❤
Try with Olives or Sun dried Tomatoes😋😋
Thank you so much, Sir. I was going to buy Irish soda bread, so glad I found you and your recipe. I never knew how easy it was to make this bread. Have a happy St. Patrick's Day. I just subscribed and glanced at your other recipes. Wow, coconut cream pumpkin soup with lobster and wild mushrooms, flapjacks, and Jammy dodgers (they look like Linzer tarts which I loved as a kid). All the recipes look soooo good. Have a nice day from across the pond.
I’m from the USA and always liked soda bread, but I never had a savory version like this! My local stores always sell the raisin / seeded kind exclusively. I really want to try this version with the corned beef now!!
Yes... That's what led me to this video! I picked up soda bread which tastes like cake. It's recommended with corned beef but I was questioning if that's right because it's so sweet! Now I see, it's not supposed to be like that
”Winston! Winston! Come back with that leg of lamb!” Darren McGrady
This is amazing. I had no idea you can make bread from soda. We always have flour and soda in the kitchen but sometimes we run out of bread exactly on the day when shops are closed so now I'll know what to do. 😊
Early Origins of the McGrady family The surname McGrady was first found in Galway (Irish: Gaillimh) part of the province of Connacht, located on the west coast of the Island, and County Clare where they held a family seat from ancient times.
Made it today as we were snowed in. I made the corned beef differently but still sliced nicely. Made it as an "open sandwich" - thicker slice of bread, butter, mustard, but covered that with a layer of baby spinach leaves, THEN the corned beef, then shaved some Irish Cheddar over the top. On the side: celery, baby potatoes, and carrots, arranged in a row as the Irish flag. Huge success.
I made this bread today and I was afraid because I had never made bread before - I’m so happy I did!!!! It came out great! Thank you Mr. Darren!!
Hey Darren absolutely love the look of that soda bread with the corner beef! You always make it look soooo easy, but truly delicious!!!!!! Cannot wait for the leek and potato soup. One of my favorites I have to say love u paula in uk xx
I just found this video and I had no idea Irish Soda Bread was such a simple recipe! I love the stuff, but I somehow thought it required a complex process to prepare. Silly me. So my next grocery shop I'll get the buttermilk and give it a try. Thanks ❤
My moms homemade Irish soda bread had the lovely additions of a few dark raisins and some whole caraway seeds folded in. Yum 😋
Then it's not Irish soda bread. As Darren states in his video, there are only four ingredients in the recipe.
@@burntabs stop it - caraway seeds are a common flavoring for Irish soda bread. As with all recipes there is more than one option and it’s still legitimate ❣️
@@David-Once pretty sure burntabs is a snotty 15 year old troll that likes to stir the pot ;-)
Wow. Thanks a lot, Chef. You are such a sweet, beautiful human being. What a joy to watch the way you show how to make everything. 💖❤
I’m am now wanting to make this. Off to the store.
Right? With every video.
when I was young we always had a roast turkey dinner for St. Patrick's day, and dessert was a tricolour of lime and orange jelly and vanilla ice cream.
I went to an Irish pub here in SW Florida where we live. Their soda bread was so good, I'm determined to try and make it. So I came here looking to see if you've posted your own video version. And you have!! I'm so excited! You're the only one online I would trust to help me get it right! Thank you. I'll get back to you with the results next week.
Good luck, let me know how it turns out
Made your Irish Soda Bread with our Corned Beef & Cabbage yesterday & it was so good!! Thank you for this post. Also tried the Colman’s mustard-so yum with the corned beef. Already knew about Kerigold butter, it also is so very good.
I find packaged corned beef very salty! I usually soak my corned beef for 24 hrs in the fridge to get rid of some of the salt. I love it with Weber’s horseradish mustard,!
I like to use some of the "stock" to flavor the potatoes.
I have a cousin named Ms Peach. I'm Mr Puff. As babies she was the color of a peach, and I had infant bronchitis.
All of that looks very tasty - and easy to make!
The only things missing from your fry-up was Irish soda bread and potato bread... this makes me happy.
Love this man, and his mouthwatering food. Now, even I can make this bread. So easy 👍🤗
Darren I have been loving your cookbook. Your recipes are so different than what we usually make here in the US and I have had a blast entertaining with your recipes! Anyway- I’m making this bread today :)
I so enjoy your blogs, I learn tricks and tips from you. This past Christmas I made sausage rolls. I made super puff pastry and I used sausage that I made according to tips you taught me. They were fantastic. I always make Soda Bread and corned beef dinner at St Patrick's day but I still learned tips from you, thanks.
Great video, Darren. I've been making soda bread for 30+ years. I knew I would learn how to improve my technique by watching you make it. Carry On!
I have never seen a corned beef sandwich on Irish soda bread! I love all the components, will have to try them together.
Thank you for sharing this recipe, very well explained and taught! When making Irish soda bread, marks should be made to let the fairies out, so they say ......
Soda bread looks like a Crown!
We can buy Kerry-gold and that’s my go to butter here in Southern California
3:07 In the US, what most stores call “buttermilk” is actually cultured buttermilk, which is not a byproduct of the butter making process at all but rather is milk that has fermented with bacterial cultures (similar to yogurt)
Such a wonderful teacher, and a great story teller! ❤️
Invaluable lesson. Thank you.
thank you looking forward to making this dish!!!!
So simple and so-o-o delicious with Irish butter! Perfect recipe!
Fabulous! I love making a fuss for St. Pat! Lovely recipes. Thank you Darren!
So glad I found your channel. Love your videos, memories and humor ! Also, I love Winston ❤
Oh my goodness. That is so simple and looks so delicious
I celebrate with Guinness and Tullamore........Wait, I do that every day :)
Hope all is well Chef
Love to the Irish....❤
its such an amazing dish and I love the soda bread! Thanks for sharing Mr. MacGrady
I made this for dinner tonight and everyone loved it 😍 thank you for all the recipes
Outstanding! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Chef Darren!!!
Thank you! Very fun and informational!
I make this darryl.for my family every thanks again its the best.
Most American supermarkets sell an "Irish Soda Bread'' for the holiday, that is not the simple white bread you make. I think it's properly called in the Gealtacht. It's got raisins and currants in it , some barley flour, and dusted with turbinado sugar. Not complaining, I like it fine, especially w/Kerrygold butter or jam on it. But we are misled. I have made the real 4-part bread but 20 years ago, at least.
Oh, and thanks for not going Metric on us.
Thankyou darryl for us Americans love thisholiday..
I love to cook ever so much! Just wish I had a food tv budget to cook all day! I just love your videos, you are the best! Thank you for your sweetness and time, sharing abd teaching.
Watched 3 videos on Irish sodabread , your bread looked the best , blessings .
Love your videos, thank you for giving a nod to us Irish on the occasion of our national holiday.
Sous vide is 'just the thing' for bringing out the best in tougher cuts and for yielding an even cook from edge to edge. I look forward to making your Irish soda bread recipe.
That sandwich looks so yummy you made my mouth water I'm going to try that butter and mustard and I'm going to make Irish soda bread. I also love a Ruben corn beef with sourkrout and thousand island on rye bread yummy
That bread looks amazing! I can't wait to try making it! We usually make our corned beef in a pot on the stove and when its almost done we add carrots, cabbage and onion and we make cornbread muffins to have with it. We eat it like stew and oh my goodness i love it.
I absolutely love watching his videos
Thank you Chef!
you mentioned making leek and potato soup with the juice from the corned beef. well I just made a pot with the juice from the corned beef. omg it's good. made Irish soda bread. omg it's good too. so easy. and I didn't waste anything. thanks chef. love your channel.
Love ur show. Ur show is wonderful. This bread is the best and soooo easy to fix. I wish I could sit and talk about ur work. Must of been fun working form the Queen. Probably a little unnerving......
That is white soda bread used for tea with jam in the old days...I make soda bread everyday its made with a mixture of wholemeal course ground flour and a bit of white flour but you can mix it up with whatever quantity of brown flour to white. I prefer more brown flour in my bread with a mixture of very course wholemeal and teaspoon of sugar makes it taste better...I am Irish I live here I bake it every day we just call it brown bread ....always best with jam and butter warm from the oven 😋
Lol!! I live for the Winston intro.
I like the way you present the Irish Soda Bead, I never had soda bread before, you encouraged me to make it, tomorrow I will try your recipe to make it for the Sunday lunch, it will be my first soda bread :) I will call it Darren's soda Bread. Thanks a lot Darren.
Super it looks great thanks
Thanks Darryl yes I'm the USA we love this bread on st.patricks big item I'm Irish ony fily o.neill a DUNWORTH.i hot ten grand kids love this dinner..
My bread has a few more ingredients, but I would have to agree with you. Soda bread goes over really big at our house. That and the corned beef? I do it for 8 to 10 hours with vegetables in a crock pot. Turns out perfect every time.
I use the juices and leftover vegetables and meat to make corned beef hash. Also a big favorite here. This year, the meat was all gone. We had a guest. I appreciate the tips to use the juice. I hate throwing it out.
Love your dog , is fun to see him
Wow delicious 😋Superb recipe 🙏 Thank U so much Chef
I never made this bread. Will definitely try this tomorrow
My Irish friend used to make us soda bread every year...she added currents and a few fennel seeds and I swear, hers seemed slightly sweet? After watching you, maybe I'll give it a try next year. Love your show!
I bet it was electrifying! Thanks for the laugh, Spencer. Laughter's the best medicine. Darren's a close second.
Yes it's a big hit here got to make every yr a soda bread a we got ten grandkids who love this..
Scones with Irish bacon and butter, the folks at Greenhills Bakery in the Dorchester Village of Boston look at me funny. The sweetness of the scone with raisins, the saltiness of the bacon, and the buttery goodness. Makes me humgry just thinking of it.
Ok that looks incredible
You are an enthusiastic teacher. I love listening to your vlogs. I thought you were making the leek and potato soup with it and a nice ale 🍺 would really make it Irish! And some sauerkraut on the sandwich!
Thanks for watching!
I can not wait to make soda bread to go with our corn beef dinner. Thank you!👍🏻😍
My grandma , born and raised in Ireland, came to America when she was 22. Over the years, she lost her appreciation for soda bread. I however love it!
Dear lord this is making me hungry. Love your recipes and your stories. ❤️
Im trying this recipe!
Oh my, I’m hooked!
I love your cooking videos, Darren! I enjoy the recipes, but also your stories and advice! Happy St. Patrick’s Day ☘️🇨🇮💚

All my grandkids love this meal never miss it..march17thin. America..
tanks, chef!!
Great job
💚🍀🎩🍞 can’t wait to bake this. Thank you!!
I'm 1/2 Irish born on Saint Patrick day to my father's delight plus he said I never had blue eyes I always had ice green eyes (as green as the emerald isle). LOL my other half is Italian....yeah I have a temper but I mellow out with a belt of Irish whiskey (naw, I don't drink, don't say it lol)
Omg so great that I now Discover your youtube channel sir/chef Darren your recipes are such a great 👏👏👏👏
Been making this for years: Happy to see Darren's take on it! Cheers, all!
Delicious!
This sounds AH-may-zing! I'm considering trying my very first Irish Soda Bread today! I'll use my Ninja Foodi 9-in-1 for the baking though, so it may not be "just right" when finished! My brisket (pre-brined storebought) will use the pressure cooker of the Foodi as well, after the bread is baked. I'll use the stovetop only to boil my potatoes & cabbage for (also my 1st attempt at) colcannon. I recently found that my DNA is 36% Irish, second only to "England & Northwestern Europe" at 44%. In fact, I'm 95% from the 4 British Isle nations! Although I have done corned beef & cabbage w/ potatoes, onions, & carrots as a St. Patrick's Day "pot roast" for over 40 years, NOW it will be even more special to me! Wish me the Luck of the Irish! Now, here goes!
EDIT: I forgot what I actually came to say! I've saved butter wrappers in ziplock bags, in the freezer, for decades! I used them mostly to grease pans for cake baking, but I've also set them on top of mashed potatoes (or other vegetables) to melt rather than waste them! My Sweet Mama taught me to be frugal!
