as early as 1969 Hendrix's Band of Gypsies were backstage at the Fillmore East on New YEARS EVE when a fan showed up w/ a gift .a wooden box stuffed w/ coke. it was empty by show time.
FF I remember those days. it was thought to cause only a dependence. a highly habit forming drug. I'm actually still not sure if it causes adverse physical reactions to abstain from it (that, for you anti-pot folks is the medical dictionary's definition of addiction).

The war on drugs has been an epic failure. Addiction is a medical issue and should be treated as such. Studies show the vast majority of drug users don't become addicts. Unfortunately in most countries locking up non violent drug offenders is a business. I agree with Frank Zappa who was for drug legalization. Don't get me wrong, cocaine is a horrible drug, turns people into assholes and is best to be avoided. That said, realistic and practical solutions are the solutions that work best in this imperfect world.
Zappa making those gestures is priceless
Ha! That test pressing of "Man From Utopia" Frank's pointing to at 6:10 must be worth a few bob these days!
Tried it a few times----couldn't believe I'd paid money to feel so awful.
Who out there has stepped up to take Frank's place........ errrr that would be no-one folks.
