  • The Ford Mondeo seemed to rule the road in the 90s, so much so that its drivers had their own nickname - "Mondeo Man". In more recent years though, it has been outsold by the Vauxhall Insignia, so it the Mondeo still worth buying? I drove it to find out.

    I was never a Ford person , I got a 3rd gen Mondeo it’s a really great car, better than you’d expect, I bet this model the same and doesn’t disappoint,the mk5 I’ve always really like the look of, so stylish, it’s a shame that Mondeo and now insignia has ceased in favour of awful SUVs to replace them, give me a handsome large hatchback/ Saloon any day over an SUV.

    Drive a company Mondeo diesel estate 2016, fantastic car, so comfortable, smooth, great seats, superb build quality, best on the motorway though, 70+ mpg if you keep it at a steady 56 mph.

    I changed from a 2017 Insignia SRi Nav 170hp diesel to a 2020 Mondeo Titanium 180hp diesel, both owned from new. After 6 months, I still don't know which is better.
    The Insignia had a quieter engine (from outside the car, could barely hear it ticking over), and a better steering wheel - fantastic, thick soft leather, and it felt sportier to drive.
    The Mondeo is more spacious and luxurious (great heated leather seats), has more gadgets, and I feel has more 'presence' on the road.
    The Insignia was marginally more economical - 47mpg vs 44mpg, but the Mondeo feels a heavier, more solid car.
    Overall, very happy with both and would recommend either.

      Both are good cars, albeit in a dying segment on the market. I personally prefer the Mondeo as I think it looks better and it's more engaging to drive. Thanks for watching Darren.

      No having Insignia 1.6 cdti 2017 made. It could be less noisy, and those regens… someteimes after 120 km, medium about 350-400 km.
      Now need to change and looking forward in mondeo direction. Had heard bad stories about opel 2.0 cdti, and 1.5 cdti with R3 rattles&vibrates as hell.
      As adac tests states, mondeo is ~2 db less noisy at same speed(130 km/h). And 2.0 tdi should be better for that big car as small 1.5 with 3 cylinders….hmmm

    Very informative review as always. Very good mpg. The Mondeo looks very muscular, a bit like a Mustang for families!

    Spot on, I would take it over the Insignia in a heartbeat, it just does it all really well. Also a hot version would be great but I suspect we would have to sacrifice a model in the Ford range to make it happen, as Mondeo sales are fairly low compared to the SUV's and Fiesta etc. My guess is the R&D of making a proper ST version would outweigh the amount recouped in sales...
    Great work

    Good insightful review....very interesting about the torque steer, that is something that would put me off (as a heavy right foot driver) and something most reviewers wouldn't include in their reviews. Quite shocking the level of torque steer considering the size and weight of car. There are other lighter cars out there with 180hp that don't torque steer as much. Its defo the nicest looking version of the latest mondeo but I'm still swaying towards the new SRI insignia

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  Před 7 lety +4

      Hello Shane, thanks for watching. In all honesty, I was going to leave that bit out to make the video shorter, but I thought people would want to know, especially when I haven't seen any other reviewers mention it. And yes, the torque steer caught me by surprise as well, considering the car isn't THAT powerful, plus Ford knows a thing or two about making a decent chassis.

    They need a fast version of this to get people's attention. There is a version of this engine making over 200bhp which they only put in the s max which is a shame since it would make this faster than its competition. There is a st focus with same Diesel engine as this but they didn't put the more powerful version in with over 200bhp which would put its rival golf gtd to shame

      Birmingham racing Just get a stage 1 remap and it will totally transform the engine. Apart from over 200bhp its the torque gains thats the most impressive ;)

    Great video and the car looks good.The game changer for me is it's diesel and that's a no,no for me.They are saying diesels engine's are worse for the environment now which is a complete U-turn from what they said years ago.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  Před 7 lety +2

      Yeah, I see what you mean, but seeing as the chances are this will probably be a company/fleet car anyway, the diesel is the more practical choice. I personally prefer petrol though.

    • @blackflagpirate3444
      @blackflagpirate3444 Před 7 lety +2

      Car Obsession Yeah if its a company car then I purpose that's different mate.These cars are getting so advanced its crazy.From my opinion people are buying car's for technology rather than the engine and car it's self.Sat navs and touch screen's and computer screen instrument panel don't bother me at all.But Hey!! that's the future LOL ;)

      Car Obsession It's a 7 miles run trough city and short run on motorway, and iv'e downgraded from 19" to 17" tyres, reason is i felt that the steering was heavy, now is more lighter and the tyre roll not so loud, you said that the gearbox is smooth, but on my one especialy on junctions sometimes the car pulls slow in first to second and sometimes changing to first to second is hard, probably becouse of the short run ti work i make and the gearbox dosen't worm enough, i was thinking about a remap.

    • @CarObsession
      @CarObsession  Před 7 lety +1
