Stan and Hilda what a duo always there to entertain you at the Rovers
vintage coronation street rich in characters .at its peak in the 1970s ,earley 80s, i wonder did Doris speed study betty davis .
The change in two years in Stan or rather the actor Bernard Youens. Really noticeable, the weight piling on and not so sharp with his lines.
He by all accounts, was the most loveliest man.
I think in 1973-1975 I notice a slight slur in his speech but his stroke in 1975 was when his health really declined afterwards.
A great guy.
His heavy smoking led to a 1972 heart attack
He spoke beautifully as well. He was a continuity announcer at Granada.
Ty so much for uploading these episodes great fan from nz here 💓
Love Maggie Clegg she was amazing like all the rest of the characters
Yes and quite attractive.
I used to fancy her when I was 12.
Maggie always struck me as middle class in her behaviour, speech and attitude. Don't get me wrong, I liked her a lot but nothing about her came off as working class.
Domestic violence was almost the norm those good old days .sad .
The good ole days when domestic abuse was the norm? Hmmmmm.....thats one to think about for sure. 🤦🏼♂️
@@chrispaw1 She was obviously being sarcastic. Hence the reason she put 'sad' at the end of the sentence.
And how absolutely brilliant was the acting back then.
Annie put Billiy through it well and truly , great scene from Annie
Stan is only 49😟 wow people certainly aged earlier then
The actor was nine years older in real life. Bernard Youens was born in 1914 making him 57/58 when this episode aired.
Stan had a hard life, with a lot of drinking involved.
@@woohooboyyes and he was a heavy smoker, like a lot of them sadly.
I was 3 and a half months old when this was aired
I was 12 weeks gestation old when this was aired.
I can’t believe it’s was like that 1972 in Coronation street
Rita was stunning. Rumour is she and Pat Phoenix didn't get on too well offscreen, two redheads.
Two divas in real life.
Bound to clash!
i disliked Rita from from when she first appeared to 2023, found her character vile.
I think Rita was brought in as a wake up call to Pat Phoenix by the producers.
Barbara Knox confirmed that whilst Pat Phoenix was professional towards her, she wasn't exactly warm and embracing either.
Being ten years her junior and another attractive fiery red hair to boot, Phoenix realized she was now competing in the spotlight with a younger version of herself.
No surprise that the following year she left the program and stayed gone for the next three years after that.
Len was so nonchalant about Rita being hit, even told her to go back. I guess people thought differently about hitting women back in the day.
Things haven't improved in many minds so far as domestic violence is concerned, though admittedly it is taken way more seriously today.
It's very sad. No matter what the circumstances.
@Tilly Divine I think you've just sort of confirmed it. Violence in general was much more accepted then. Whether it was domestic violence, being a vigilante and taking the law into your own hands, or football hooliganism. Nowadays, we'd get the police involved. Things that people did and said in those days are often fairly shocking to today's people.
@Tilly Divine your dad deserves a medal 🏅.
Did Ken beat that guy up for hitting her?
Never knew the men of the Street were so musical. 🎺🎺🎺🎸🎸🎸🎹🎹🎹🎼🎵🎶😄🥰
I notice the difference in Stan, too. I'd only ever seen him in 80's episodes then saw him in 70's and noticed how much more vibrant he was then.
Ditto for Ena. She wasn’t at her best performance-wise later in the decade (because of the actor’s health problems) but from the start up until ’76-ish she was the embodiment of soap battle-axe. The actress may-or-may-not have-had health issues even in those first sixteen years but it didn’t show on-screen until it did (not that she even featured that-much thereafter).
The demands of doing (what was at the time) a twice weekly television series that was broadcast all year round without a break was demanding.
The decade started with the death of Arthur Leslie who died of a heart attack at the age of 70. This was followed by the passing of Graham Haberfield in 1975 at the young age of 33.
Bernard Youens, Violet Carson and Margot Bryant alao suffered declines in their health during this decade which resulted in the first two having their workloads and appearances reduced and the last having to retire altogether.
Alf Roberts reminds me of peter Kay 😂
Peter Kay has joked in one of his early stand ups that when people were looking for him, they would say "just ask for the one that looks like a young Alf Roberts "🥰
Haha i don't remember ena sharples from the glen miller story.
The cries of welcome for Stan sounded genuine
because they were.........
After the heart attack in 1972 his health rapidly declined, poor Bernard.
Was he really in hospital?
This is the first time in the closing credits to Coronation Street that Eileen Derbyshire's character is credited as Emily Bishop.
Yrah he should have stood up for his mum and said that his mum weren't about to give up on the pub.
I was 1 year and 5 months when this was shown corrie was miles better than today's rubbish coronation street
How right you are Ryan
Absolutely,so few believable characters, don’t get me started with that Fizz!
The way miss sharply stood there remind me of when blade steps out of the shadow blood rave
Well, that was very good.
Alans wisecrack , comical
12:04 These days they'd have discharged him 48 hours after he was admitted.
10/10
The very early days of Rita - was Maggie jealous? Poor Annie.
Annie was always too self-assured for sympathy.
Rita!
This episode almost makes me like Len Fairclough. Knowing what eventually became of Peter Adamson makes this hard, but he was certainly a good actor and made Len an engaging character.
Joseph and today TV 😀
Is there an episode of Len losing the fight and ended up face down in the muddy water?
7:39 Emily Bishop fantastic figure and super frock
Yellow bird high up on banana tree yellow bird la la la la la la la
I used to play that on a glockenspiel in a marching band. 😄😂
That would be in F sharpels
half a pint and a gt 26pence cheap cheap cheap
Yea but what was inflation and what were wages?
@@andyrob3259
£30 per week was good money in 1972. Seriously.
@@staceygrove5976 lol.
Why doesn’t Rita stay at his place??!
I was 10 years old.
15:27 End Of Part One ❤
Lol i wasant born
This is proper coronation street and not that pile of boring poorly written crap that passes for a soap these days. Give me classic Corrie anytime..
Len is awful. No concern for Rita: why the h=ll did she want him???
All the sheilas come down on Len as if Rita is a victim.
