    Corrected/Edited for comment below - I measured an RS3 filter by mistake - Racinglines figure for S3/GTI filter is correct as far as it goes, reference to MAF deleted . Also look at other dyno reviews on YT , ca. 10 BHP more only with the larger dia intake hose and elbow. Unless you are talking very big turbo conversions the OE set up is fine, the filter area is already huge on the standard box, doubling it is overkill , Racingline are only comparing filter plan areas not actual filter medium areas, the OE filter is deeper and has more pleats, the intake duct after the filter is the main restriction, it's certainly not going to keep the intake air cooler on a hot day as the flow is determined by boost and engine revs. Apart from the noise, if that's your thing, it's possible the larger intake area of the Racing line set up over the radiator would give higher airbox pressures at higher speeds ( "ram effect" ) but you can add that to the OEM set up as well much cheaper than the Racing-line set up.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před rokem +12

      I appreciate all comments and welcome alternative opinions but to criticise Racingline's data and effectively say they are misleading buyers, yet talk about a MAF as a restrictor on this engine when it doesn't actually have one doesn't give your comments much credibility sadly.

    Best thing I did to my ED40 was this intake. The noise was a huge bonus but the feel overall was a bit better. I also had both filters, originally had the foam filter but I prefer a cotton filter as foam ones can degrade and sometimes a turbo can munch the foam and we don't want that. There's a difference in sound between them also and I prefer the cotton filter's sound. I've also got the elbow and pipe from Racingline. However, the Forge all in one pipe and elbow is cheaper and better overall, just doesn't look as OEM. But, it will also allow you to fir a DV if you wanted.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před rokem

      I haven't seen that. TBH I went off K&N a long time ago due to their over oiled filters that killed MAFs and the 57i intake which sucked hot air in and made the car slower. I'm sure it's fine but the name just has associations with badly modified cars, at least here in the UK.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  Před rokem

      I didn't even know RL did an open intake. If you look at the RL page where they sell the benefits of R600 (link in vid description), you will quickly work out an open intake with aluminium shielding is never going to work as efficiently as closed intake of PU material. So I think the open intake is for those who care more about noise than actual performance which is fair enough. A lot of mods actually make cars slower (like stiff lowering springs on a typical bumpy UK B road) so I guess they are just responding to demand.

      Thanks for the replies both! The noise was the main reason for looking into open. Have been looking into stage 2 parts and tune so a slight drop in a hp is still a lot more than standard but the sensible option seems to be the R600. @@JoeThomasMTC I have the same car as you on stage 1, did the pikey R600 mods last week, the thing that really made the difference was the turbo elbow in my opinion. I've just done a 500 mile round trip this weekend and throttle response is better and it definitely pulls harder, more difference than I was expecting tbh. I nearly went for the R600 but figured ultimately it's a filter in a plastic box. I do think they look great though and if I wasn't trying to save the pennies on this occasion I would have got one. I remember back in the day taking my 205 1.9 GTI to Demon Tweeks to have a K&N cone filter fitted, on the drive back it was slower than with the standard airbox, which has put me off the open type ever since..

When I started the car up and blipped the throttle it appeared to rev up a bit quicker, kind of like a lightened flywheel effect. Took it out for a test drive and can't say I really noticed it was any faster though. I then fitted a turbo elbow and inlet pipe and it's made a big difference, really noticeable. Better throttle response and it definitely pulls harder all the way through the rev range, feels smoother too. All for around £200. I'm aware of confirmation bias with these things but butt dyno says maybe 15-20bhp extra overall, it feels that much improved to me.

      @stradmanchannel3626 Před rokem +1

      @@volkswizard @volkswizard well all I can say is hard "data" is one thing and feeling it is another so if you think that you can "feel" 5-6 horsepower through your butt then you have a better butt dyno than I have! 😂 Sound improvement was marginal even by your own admission. Moreover if you've never cooked brake fluid in a standard road car on standard brake fluid on track then you haven't been going fast enough! . I guarantee you will absolutely boil your brake fluid and will need a Dot 5 fluid on track if you peddle it properly. And in any case I thought you said you didn't want to break your track "cherry" at the Ring so I have to presume therefore that you are a track newbie and don't appreciate things like the above.. No shame in that but don't start to suggest otherwise.
      BTW never expect to get the most of any car on track above 30 degrees Celsius. No matter what you throw at it in terms of mods it will usually always pull horsepower due to hear soak all round thankfully we only get a small handful of those days in blighty and Northern Europe..

      The Clubsport S doesn't come with the underbonnet pad - I think that's the full extent of the soundproofing removal. Elbow will be done soon, have no fear 👍🏻

      Racingline to do an R600 Evo which fits Mk7 & MK8 and that's the one I am using as it's exactly the same item I fitted to my Mk8 Clubsport in Dec 2021 with similar results
