    Another tip I've learned, pot them in Terracotta/Clay Pots. Helps with root rot, and absorbing moisture. Neem oil and Castile peppermint soap will help with Spider mites.

    pro tip with all rubber tree plants - put them outside in a shaded area during the summer and they’ll grow like CRAZY. they looooove the extra light!

      When I bring mine back inside for fall/winter, I hose down the entire plant, upside down lolz.
      I Tie a trash bag around the pot and the base of the tree to keep the dirt In, flip it upside down and spray the heck out of it. Usually works really well! I do the same for my hibiscus tree, and plumeria trees and it’s worked well for me! Sometimes I use a water and dishsoap mixture to clean the leaves off and make sure there is nothing icky coming in from outside if I am being extra cautious.

      @erinw8787 Před 2 lety +3

      Agreed . All of mine are outside under my verandah or carport . They were sad AF when I had them inside , put them outside and stick them in the rain whenever it rains and BAM - they are now huge to the point I’m thinking of putting them in a shaded garden bed .

    Fun fact for anyone who's interested in plant names and/or pronunciation: 'Tineke' is a Dutch name, pronounced as TEE-nuh-kuh. I must say I like the other pronunctiation too, it makes the name sound somewhat extra tropical and maybe Hawaiian?

    • @teensymarie
      @teensymarie Před 3 lety +10

      This always makes me smile when I hear it. I lived in NL for a.few years, and my husband is Dutch. It's like I have a secret world in my head with a radar for all things Dutch, and I lock in on the ways my fellow Americans get them wrong. Stroopwafels have become popular. You can imagine how that goes. 😁

    I very much agree about watering them less. Ficus elasticas really prefer their soil on the drier side of things. I water mine only when completely dry from top to bottom and even then I let it stay dry for a day or two.

    • @t.pisani8239
      @t.pisani8239 Před 3 lety +10

      Once again I see completely contradicting information about plant care online. Other sites say to keep it moist at all times. So hard for a new plant owner.

    • @jodaboda1
      @jodaboda1 Před 2 lety +4

      @@t.pisani8239 people have very different experiences because they have different conditions: different location and light, and especially different pot sizes and soil/drainage. Some people err on the side of fast-draining soil to evade root rot, but then have to water much more frequently.

    • @annakilifa331
      @annakilifa331 Před 2 lety +7

      @@t.pisani8239 to add to what the other commenter said, the plant tells you a few things about what you are doing right or wrong in your specific conditions. If there are brown spots on the leaves, it is probably being overwatered. If its leaves are hanging at a lower angle, that can be a sign of underwatering or depending on the severity, just a sign that now or soon would be a good time to water it again. Then again, if the plant is used to less watering or being left dry for relatively long times, the leaves might get a bit more used to the drooping state and might not move up anymore when watered without that being bad for the plant. Especially the older leaves, the younger ones should still be able to tell you a few things. When you have a plant for a while, you get used to some of these signs and get a better understanding for how to care for it in your home in your specific conditions. While a lot of advuce on watering schedules and such might be very contradictory because it depends a lot on specific conditions, the advice on how a specific plant tells you what it needs is usually not as widely varied, so if you look for that, that might be more practically helpful.

      @t.pisani8239 I started using a 20 dollar water meter from home depot and it completely took the guessing game away. It's hard to know when to water otherwise for beginners especially. It could be every day. It could be every other month.. etc so many variables. But the meter will tell you if there's water in there or not.. and around how much. Even if it looks dry on top. Telling you, life changer for me haha.

    I love my elasticas and can say that from my experience I have watered them daily and left them out in full sun( I also live right outside of Philly) and it shot up giving me new leaves almost daily and it excited me so much.
    Mine was about 18” or just a little bit taller and is now almost to my ceiling. It is already 7’ tall. I planted it in a mix of potting mix with some earthworm compost and perlite and I fertilize maybe every other week with a weak mix of water with with rich emulsion. All my plants seem to love that and are now g-I-a-n-t.
    I have another beer pot of elastica with six little trunks in the pot and it is also growing the same way. My previous one was purchased in a 10” pot almost busting with roots. I have had to repot it since twice within the year and a half I’ve had it. It is now inside the house and too large to go back out.

      Do your research when you find a plant you like. I recently bought a Ficus Elastica, or rubber tree burgundy, for 24.99 at Home Depot, which I thought was kinda pricey, but I later saw the same one for sale online, same pot, same height, for 75.00. I get many of mine on clearance from Lowe's or nurseries. Look up the plants you like online and hit the shopping tab, that will enable you to see the various plants and prices for each. I recently went to a nursery and found 2 Rubber trees for 20 each. I got both of them. 1 of them had 2 different rubber trees in the pot! so excited about that! Pretty much, don't get plants from the grocery store, unless they are on clearance because I've noticed they mark them way up. I am willing, however to spend a bit more buying plants from a reputable nursery because they only purchase healthy plants. It is a lot of trial and error! Don't get frustrated, you are still learning! It takes time! there is so much to learn! If a plant makes you happy then it's money well spent!

      Rhonda Fannin it was probably so expensive because recently many are on Etsy where plants are reselled for insane prices. Grocery stores are ok in my area/ opinion, got my ruby rubber tree for 13$ 2 stems ft tall at one. If you want to get a price range, do this. When you are researching care before you buy whatever your interested in, simultaneously look up price ranges online, store, call nurseries. Good luck :) don’t get discouraged if you paid a little more.that’s part of it, as long as your not ripped off we can’t get every plant we own when it’s happens to be selling the cheapest.

    I love love love my Tineke! It struggled in my bathroom which I thought had enough light but it started dropping leaves at an alarming rate. Once I gave it more light (works in both in East and southeast facing window) it’s been a breeze and putting out new leaves left and right! Once you find a good spot, don’t move it. Ficus hate to be disturbed and will drop leaves on a whim if you move it.

    Question...seeing that both ficus have fairly similar growing needs and habits....would you consider transplanting them together in a suitably sized clay pot?....thank you.

    QUESTION: i have a ficus ruby, it’s about half the size of the plants in the video, however it has three trunks(I think they’re three separate in one pot). Should I attempt to separate them or keep them together ? The leaves are pushing the trunks outward and new growth is almost being hampered due to the tallest trunks leaves being above the smaller trunks growth points.

      Hi this exact same thing happened to my Ruby ficus, I would love to know what you did to yours. I have been trying to research if they are suckers but I can’t find any info online. I decided to repot mine and looked at the 2 “suckers” if that’s what they are and they had some of their own roots. I’m attempting to propagate them so we will see how they go

    Help! I just got little seedling of 'Tineke' and it came watered. I planted it in dry soil (it came without pot) and
    I sprayed the leaves quite often with destilled water. I only have it for 4 days but it already lost its smallest bottom leaf (it wasn't damaged or dried up) and the rest has a little black dot
    at the tips of the leaves. It has light and soil is just damp (I watered it already, soil has dried faster because it's quite warm in my house) as it should I guess. I don't know what can be wrong!

    I have a younger Ruby in a 4" pot, and that little dude drinks four time as much as any other ficus in my house, including my similarly sized Ficus Elastica Mini Burgundy and Ficus Altissima. I have to water every three days, even doing the "finger test" to check if the soil is dry first.
    It also grows more than twice as fast, which probably explains why it drinks so much. I decided to add some slow-release spikes to the pot after bringing it home, and it puts out a new top leaf about once a week, each leaf bigger than the last, so clearly they like to be fed.
    I just got a baby Tineke and a baby full-size Burgundy, so we will see if the new kids are as thirsty as their brother since they're pretty much the same aside from the leaf color.

    I learned a lesson on moving focus outdoor for the summer. I keep my Burgundy directly in a south facing window. I bought a green rubber tree “Chloe” and put it outside on my west facing deck. Two of the leaves burned! I was so sad, and felt really bad. I have it moved to my north facing portion of the deck in the shade. Doing fine there. So even if a plant can take direct INDOOR light, does not mean it can withstand direct outdoor light. At least not without acclimation.

    I have three, the "Ruby", the "Tineke", and the plain green one "Robusta" ? I agree that they do need bright light and let them dry out and don't over water them. I thought that I had killed my Tineke, but I put it in better light and it started giving me some new leaves and it's in a 5 inch pot and has two stems and I'm just leaving it alone and it's doing great. Thanks for this video, I was wondering what the care of this plant was and then you posted this video and now I know. Have a great day and stay safe, sending love and hugs, bye for now.

    Hey Nick, I have a ruby I thought it was a Teneycke but anyway it’s dirty getting large black spots on the leaves it didn’t turn yellow it didn’t drop off but I thought it was a fungus or a virus so I took those leaves off my tree was about 6 1/2 7 feet tall so I cut it in half now how do I propagate it and I also sprayed it with neem oil and that seem to stop whatever it was going on so the bottom half in the pot is doing wonderful in the top half. I just stuck in water. Do I need to take the leaves off and propagate them or watt, thanks

    Your ruby looks just like a tineke apart from the top leaves. My Ruby’s leaves are pink and green all the way and it’s really quite large. I’m curious as to why yours has lost its pigment. Both mine are on the floor directly in front of a window with morning sun and they thrive there. I water once a fortnight and, not heavily.

    Hi. Please do a video on problems with tineke. I've done well with rubber plants outdoors on porch but I am struggling with tineke indoors ! Received a gift of tineke, very expensive-- $50 (8 inch ?). It was in a plastic container and seemed overwatered (though healthy). I transferred it to a clay pot with no disruption to roots. I know the rubber plant likes to be on the dry side, as I water my other rubber plants on porch about once a week-- more during summer heat. No problems ! I grew them from 2-4 inch pots, now 5 feet tall ! But the new indoor tineke is driving me nuts ! Burnt edges-- never got that outdoor. Help ! Thanks in advance

      i'd guess it's light. I had my dark rubber plant in the living room about 5 ft in from the south facing window (with venetian blinds partly closed). He was not happy and happily dropped leaves for two weeks. I gave up and moved him to my home office but with a couple of large east facing window (with cellular blinds). He's so much happier that he pushed out a new leaf within a week. I just bought a Teneke today and put him in the same spot as my first. Here's to him just as well though I hear the variegated ones are slower (less chlorophyll).

    My ficus elastica tineke has started branching on its own after I repotted. It’s a very low branch, and I want it to continue to get taller and not branch. Should I just cut the branching bit off? I’m worried it’s a sign that it’s going to stop growing from the top central stalk.
