I'll answer a couple of questions here. I built this system because I have a bad back and have to avoid heavy lifting so a couple of extra steps is completely irelevent to me if it make the job easier.
No, a trailer is not an option for me at all. I have nowhere to store it and most importantly, the places I go to launch have NO trailer facilities, and those that do are set up for power boats and are slippery scary places to launch a kayak. The Kayak cart is heavily modified from original, making it wider, with balloon sand tyres and dismantlable so it all fits in the forward hatch while I'm standing in the water so I can take it with me and don't have to go back to the car. After this video was made I beefed up the rack rails with a thicker tube and added a second pair of racks to share the load.
    Happy Sailing everyone, Cheers, Peter

Thanks. I've gone through dozens of the videos here looking for a doable roof rack. I don't have a bad back, I just don't like people much.

Great Idea for the future . Plan to take a Caravan round Oz. Wifey thinks my TI can only go
on the Hobie Trailer. So would not be coming with us. Mmm, she could be in for a shock.
    Nice video.

Seems like a lot of work , better off with a trailer.

The best bit from The karitek design and more, great work Ti is very heavy on the roof as a load but very clever as an easy load design maybe you should market this would also be great for tender craft, small sailing dingys ect

Stealing trailers is a drunken hillbilly cottage industry where I live. It would be too much like real work to unbolt and steal a roof rack.

I think this design is ingenious. Really solves a problem of the huge weight of loading a Hobie island. I normally use a trailer but it limits where I can park and launch from around Sydney, so I am thinking of making something like this for when I want to fish in non-trailer friendly areas. What gauge SHS did you use and do you know how much weight it adds? Or is it aluminium?

I would hav hought it would make more sense to completely finish assembly BEFORE wheedling the TI closer to the water. I appreciate my trailer much more now... ANY rooftop solution adds lots of complexity...

Got that right. I rooftop using a crane but it's still slower than a trailer

Impressive! How much does that roof rack weigh?
I have a scion tC, and roof rack options are limited. I'd prefer a roof rack. Maybe even mix in a truck bed extender to distribute the weight more evenly.

The hull isn’t that heavy. I’d just lift the front end of the canoe up to the roof rack then go to the back of the canoe and lift up and slide the canoe on. I’ve got a 31 foot 3 man outrigger canoe that weighs 100 pounds and my wife and I put it up on our Ford F-150 with no problem.

An over 5 metre Tandem attached to a roof rack less than a metre separation doesn't look to stable for long fast trips. The roof rack does look pretty robust though, great video.

Hi Bill, it's my invention. CAD designed to suit my car, and home constructed. On the Hobie Community website when I did an article on this years ago, I had a lot of requests for "Kits" for it, but that's just not practical. I put it up to inspire others to make their own version. Regards, Peter
