There’s nothing this side of Heaven more peaceful than being on open water. Did my time in the Navy and loved being underway. I kayak fish on the coast, but now you’ve planted a seed with a sail. My first thought if I were to do that is a vacuum sealed bag for clothes/bedding (maybe a battery operated small device?). Anyway, I appreciate the love of open water. Anchors aweigh my friend👊🏼🎣

Get yourself something wind powered and set sail mate!
Your water is coming in from somewhere other than the front hatch. Take the boat and put it on the trailer and put 10 gallons of water into the hull. Now get underneath the boat and see where water is leaking out.
I believe that the stern was underwater as I kept my drinks back there. That would put the rudder lines (and their holes) underwater.
I’ve done some extensive mods to prevent swamping again. But, I have been unable to find time to get out on the water. Maybe soon.

What a great video! Where I live we are surrounded by lots of islands with rainforests, resorts, beautiful beaches, and calm, deep waters in between - so I've wanted a Hobie Islander tandem for years! Nice post and I did watch the whole thing. The challenges you faced and how you addressed them are what made it interesting. I have a 2015 TI and my kids are just at that age where we are planning our first barrier island overnight trip. The only time I've experienced flooding that bad is when I had a hole in the keel at the stern from dragging on the road accidently. Small hole, but that's all it took with 2 adults and 2 kids on board. That passenger or cargo weight makes a difference.
Agreed. I think I had too much weight in the rear (all the water and food). This caused the holes for the rudder lines to be under water. The front hatch was also an issue and I have videos of the mods and a recent test of watertight difference after modding. You can find those videos on the channel list if it interests you.

First and foremost: great video; you really kept your cool in situations that would have had others panicking. I'm still sailing my 2007 Adventure Island every chance I get. Years ago I modified the seat with plywood and a GCI canoe chair. Ducking under the sail when tacking sure beats sitting in a pool of water. It's a shame Hobie never made a version of the new seat for older models. Splash guards work extremely well also. I've been in a couple of situations where I took on a lot of water. Check for little cracks in the amas where the akas insert; change your gaskets too. If you can, store your batteries topside. When taking a trip, such as this one, fill up all the space below deck, perhaps with airbags to minimize weight but leaving little room for water to fill the hull. I'm just about to click "Subscribe," so looking forward to more videos.

I’ve looked for cracks and lake tested and the hull stays dry. I think it was a hatch issue. I’d love to retrofit the new Hobie chair but they are too expensive to just play with and hope it works. I’ll look into your seat riser idea for sure.

I've got 2 AIs and I've been sailing them in the Pacific (mostly, in the Monterey Bay) since 2014. They're great boats, but I'd strongly suggest waterproofing the front hatch, if you have not done so yet. Your boat getting swamped is almost certainly due to the front hatch, which is notoriously leaky. Since the front of the boat often plunges under water, if you don't waterproof the hatch, you'll fill up with water. Take a look at the Hobie forum, and you'll find at least 3 different ways that people have used to successfully waterproof the hatch. I've been out in conditions way more intense than anything in this video for 6-8 hours, and I only get a few cups of water inside at the end of the day--and that's with no bailing...

I think you need to invest in a hand bilge pump. You can gets ones that mount in the floor or a hatch cover like the one right in front of you. If you have batteries, you could invest in an automatic electric bilge pump.
Thank you for the advice. On this trip (and every trip) I always carry a hand bilge. Since this video, I have also installed a lithium battery and auto bilge. Mod video is on the channel if you have any tips or additional advice on how I modded the kayak.

on choppy water keep always your trampoline on both side to prevent more water getting in the center haul
Good tip. On my next trip, I’ll be keeping all my gear on the trampolines so they will definitively both be out. I’ve made a few mods as well to help with any swamping issues (I hope).

Seems like there was a leak in the hull.. thats an insane amount of water to take on.. I own an adventure island and once took on water like that and it was due to a cracked
hull.
I checked the hull throughout. I believe since I put all my water and food in the stern, the holes for the rudder lines were under the surface. Never noticed it but as the load go lighter and more bow heavy, it didn’t take on so much water. I overloaded the hull I think and haven’t had issues out in the Atlantic (but have done many mods too).
Hard to tell. But at least Hobies don’t sink! 🤘

As a 5th generation "Florida Man" I've always wanted to do something like this down the St Johns River from Mayport to Orlando with all of the cool scenery, waterfront restaurants, lake crossings, etc but don't know if there'd be much wind in the narrow parts
You always have pedal power! I say go for it, have a plan, rough schedule, and a friend or family member ready with a truck / trailer in case you have to abort and dock. I’ll be doing this again but better prepared.

@@FloridaManTV Yeah, my old tarpon 120 doesn't even have that LOL. Maybe one day I'll scoop up a used hobie AI because in Ft Lauderdale we can go out 2 miles and be in the gulfstream catching bluewater fish BUT the current will pull you miles away from the launch point unless like you said there's a car waiting for you at another spot but it'd be really nice just to use the sail and daggerboard to go anywhere you want (if there's wind). Also always wanted to play around with one in Port St Joe, do some scalloping and some sailing and cruising around
@@joew717, they are a blast. Keep an eye out on marketplace for a Hobie. We are entering a recession and people will start selling off stuff to get by I am afraid. Might find a good deal. That’s how I got mine. It was a steal (video of the purchase on my channel).
Also, if planing to buy one for adventuring, I’d recommend the TI. It holds a bit more weight (gear) as I think I overload mine and take on water through the rudder line holes. Plus, you can have a buddy help pedal when the wind dies! 🤘
Getting chilly here for Hobie content (panhandle) but I have a few vids on the channel to keep ya occupied if ya want to see my journey with it.
When your local laundromat changes those big seals on those big dryers, get a used one and perhaps do a little experiment with cutting and gluing ????

I'll be paying attention to your fix for the front hatch! I have the hobie PA 14 and I get water in my front hatch all the time and I feel like it could be so much better!

That was really amazing to watch, i believe you needed less weight and better hatches. I thought you will call it off after seeing the inner full of water but you managed to do 132M amazing .. worth watching thanks for sharing it with us
Thanks for watching! I have since determined that putting all my water and food in the stern was a bad idea (weight). The rudder lines go through tubes in the hull. So when it was under water it had 4 holes letting water in.
Hatch Mods have been done since then and safety has been upgraded with auto bilge pump and manual switch. You can find that video on my channel list if you want.

I don’t carry a compass because visually navigating these waters is easy due to the terrain and water features. But if my GPS/NAV system goes out, and at night, a compass may be a safe idea. Be prepared right? I’ll add it to my tool kit.

Yes, I just unscrewed the rear drain plug (lower one under the rudder) and let it drain by pulling the yak up on the beach incline. Just don’t forget to put it back in. It’s a good idea to have some small pliers with you because the plug is small and sand can make it hard to get in/out. Remember not to over-tighten as it’ll crush the o-ring and leak.

Thanks John! It’s a little cold here for content until spring but more Hobie adventures are definitely coming! The contraption I think you’re referring too is called a sheet riser. Made normally from DIY PVC, it lifts the lines up a bit to clear your head for tall fellows so ya don’t get hung up when you tack. He also mounts his GoPro to it. If that isn’t what you’re talking about, let me know and I’ll try to figure out what you’re looking at.
Given the age of your boat, I have a feeling you have the dreaded drive well crack. The boat seemed to fill up much faster when you were pedaling. Good Luck with it, I enjoyed the video.

I have taken the Hobie out on the lake since and peddled around all day and it stayed bone dry inside. I am ruling out a crack, unless, it only appears when force on the mast stresses it?
I have modded the kayak for water intrusion in video since this trip. Plan to take it out and see if I found and fixed the issue.

I ditched my hobie due to a fracture near the pedal drive. Hobie told me to pound sand. Fool me once, shame on me. Now I'm rocking a Stealth.

Unfortunately, I have no experience with the Rider 17. So couldn’t guide you, though the Hobie is very stable and sails in very light wind.

Do those pontoons make a big difference? I have an outback I want to get the sail kit for. I don't think I want to carry around those extra floats though.
Yes. I would say they are essential for the AI due to the narrow hull. There is not enough weight, draft, keel or centerboard to keep the kayak from capsizing under 90° wind loads. The AKA/AMA’s (pontoons) keep the kayak stable under heavy wind.
I don’t have experience with the Outback but it appears the mirage drive is used for the centerboard (we remove our drive to sail faster and drop a centerboard. It also seems the sail is smaller for the outback. So I imagine Hobie has it designed for their sail kit or they wouldn’t sell it.
Final thought, I’d feel safer in an AI/TI. 😁🤘

Thanks for the video. I am definitely going to try to do this next year. Wanting to get rid of my AI and get a TI for the two seat reason and gear weight reason. Currently looking. I am wondering if part of your issue fro water by the pedal was because of the weight from gear. I had a pre 2014 hobie and hated sitting in the water. Got one newer than 2015 and it is a game changer with the vantage seats. Keep making the vids.

I've got a 2013 and a 2014 AI. You can put any kind of seat on an older AI, so it's not too difficult to get you butt out of the water.
I would even take real dry bags for kayak camping. I have no idea why you left without.
I had “dry” bags, but were cheap and not really meant for submerged use I found out. Just ordered some real ones to put everything on the trampolines. Should be a better trip next go around. 🤘
I have a 2012 AI too, and my front hatch leaks too. What I do is I bought a little gasoline hand syphoning pump from Harbor Freight. It’s kind of a miniature version of your bilge bump. I keep it handy, and when I feel there is too much water in the kayak, I open up that round hatch between my legs, and pump some of the water out. The trick is to not let it get as bad as you did. I just pump the water out as I’m sailing. I need to reseal my front hatch, but I haven’t got around to it yet.
Yeah, I was not on top of it for sure. I am going to be sealing the hatch better and installing an auto bilge in a video soon. Let’s hope that takes care of it. 🤘
In my experience, there's no need for an auto-bilge if you get the front hatch sealed properly.

You don't want a drysuit in 85 degrees air temperatures, or even 70 degree air. A much cheaper splash top and splash pants or even cheaper Frogg Togg suit will keep your butt dry and the spray off of you along with the wind.
I had a stern hatch on a sea kayak letting in about a thimble full of water while trying to cross Port Charlotte in a small craft advisory. Within an hour, I had about tens gallons worth of thimbles in my stern with no ability to point into the wind. I barely missed getting flushed through Boca Grande.

I was worried about frog toggs as the material seems like it’ll saturate if I am literally sitting in water. Never used them though so I don’t know. Have you tested them submerged?

I paddle in water that's barely in its liquid form, so I do own a drysuit. I just know that I bake in it if I'm paddling in temps above 55 F. I also own splash gear that's bearable up to 70 or so (if the water is cool enough). I can't vouch for Frog Togg submersion, but I've used them in heavy rain hiking.
Bass Pro probably has waterproof pants that aren't breathable that'll keep your bum dry.
Another option is some neoprene shorts for a base layer. I go that route when the air is warm but the water isn't and submersion risk is low.
Looks like I need to get a yoga mat for my Epic 18 stern hatch.
Hatch is untested but I’ll let you guys know as I am planning a 72 hour survival challenge/sail. 😳 I think/hope that is my water intrusion area. But the bilge install is extra security in open water.
I bought a dry suit for motorcycles and it seems like it will definitely keep you dry, but the dang thing is thick plastic. Great for spring and winter but for sure no go in summer. However, summer rain here in Florida is warm and welcomed and I don’t think I’ll need it in June - August. But, I’ll pack it just in case. If I am cold, it’ll most certainly warm me up!

For me, I average 2-3 knots easy pedal.
I have an 2020 Adventure Island and a 2017 Tandem Island here in Brazil. My Tandem Island recentely and suddendly started leaking. But I neve found any crakcs on its hull I cant understand what is happening.
I just did the hatch mod by placing foam inside the hatch lid. I think I may have solved my leaking but it is so hot here in Florida during the summer I have not had a sea trial yet. You can find that mod video on my channel where I also installed an auto/manual bilge pump. Should be easy to find in my channel list if you’re interested.

Nice video. One comment though...it's not a good idea to directly parallel batteries. They will discharge through each other. And if one has a problem, a lot of current can flow from another, making lots of heat.
Thanks! I thought they all discharge at the same rate in parallel? Since they were all under water most of the time, heat wasn’t an issue 🤣🤣.

@@FloridaManTV If they were perfectly matched (same internal impedance, and producing the exact same voltage) then it would be fine, but the world is not perfect. 3 options: You can buy a battery management device, use them one at a time, or just get a bigger battery.
They are all the exact same battery and brand. But if I notice a problem I’ll look into a battery manager.

Yeah I would. I think I am overloading it and I have fixed my leaking issue. They are fun little boats. Wet ride, so not for cold weather. If you want to stay dry, buy something else.
