  • First time sailing my new Hobie Tandem Island kayak.
    Its not my first time sailing one though as I used to own one around 5 years ago.
    I trolled lures and bait and had some dolphins come check me out, but no fish.
    I'm really looking forward to doing some longer fishing trips and even some overnight camping adventures on it!

      . Awesome video, thank you so much! It really shows what to expect from the experience 😊. I've wanted one of these FOR 10yrs, ever since an elderly lady I just met at the beach one day let me try out her single Hobie Kayak with Mirage pedals & sail.. It was soooo simple, first go... And when I got home I launched straight in to some research & learned there's a tandem model! And I've coveted one ever since. But even the smallest single model is out of my price range. Maybe I should start looking for a very second hand one.. I'm determined to get one eventually - it doesn't have to be pretty!
      Thanks for the inspiration ❤

    great video. I have an '18 TI. My wife and I go out in conditions that no other boat risks. (of course appropriately furled). My question is how you control the furling line from the rear seat when sailing solo. Extending the fuling line is not an issue, but i wonder if you have installed an additional fairlead cleat, and if so do you run the furling line directly from the mast to it?

    • @hooked_on_adventure
      @hooked_on_adventure  Před 3 lety +1

      Cheers!
      On this day, I found it hard to lock in the furling line because of the box I had sitting in the front seat. But I have since installed a deck there (see my more recent videos) and by having that space clear, I dont have a problem locking it in and having the sail half furled.
      Saying that though, it would be awesome to have a cleat for the furling line on the back seat. To do that, you would have to replace the furling line with a longer rope. But it would be super handy.

      Hello. I am trying to decide between a TI or a Getaway for my next boat. Sailing has always been much more my thing than kayaking. I would be glad if you could share your feedback regarding what made you shift from "pure sailboats" to "hybrids". Thank you in advance.

    • @mathewdavis-adventuresandd6643
      @mathewdavis-adventuresandd6643 Před 3 lety

      @@stephanegavignet1592 Hello. I love both sailing and kayaking. Both machines are in my opinion GREAT for what they are designed for. The Hobie Getaway was a bit much for me to set up by myself every time I wanted to sail it, but I tell you it's a great catamaran that you can even camp on and it sets high out of the water. It's a blast with family, unfortunately my family has no interest in sailing. If you love sailing and you have a partner, go get the Hobie Getaway. Now the Hobie TI is both a kayak and a sailing vessel it does neither great as just a kayak or just a sail boat. It's too big for just a kayak and it sails poorly in high winds. BUT, if you like some thing that is pretty easy to set up, trailer, and slides effortlessly across the water at a moderate speed in winds from 6 - 18 mph, the TI is the way to go. I've had as many as four on my TI and I've sailed as far as 12 miles offshore in search for King Mackerel with a friend. The outriggers come off and if you have a partner it works fine as a kayak, a bit big for one person. I've had it up to 9 mph before and it sails great in moderate winds. Scroll through some of my videos and you can see the different ways I've used the TI and the different aftermarket projects I have added to make a more enjoyable experience. Hope this helped. Contact me anytime if you have questions. I've own many small sailboats and kayaks.

    • @stephanegavignet1592
      @stephanegavignet1592 Před 3 lety

      @@mathewdavis-adventuresandd6643 Thanks for your quick answer. Really tough choice for me. On the one hand the TI seems to be the most versatile, but on the other hand I fear I could miss the thrill of sailing downwind around 11-12 knots like I do with my old Hobie Twixxy.... which souldn't be an issue as I am not planning to sell it anyway. My family - except for my oldest son - is not into sailing, though they enjoy a ride from time to time. My youngest son (10 yo) is crazy about fishing and has been watching many videos involving TIs and fishing. Something bothering me is your saying that the TI sails poorly in high winds : I live in Tahiti, and tradewinds between 15-20 knots are common. Easier storage and handling are also big pros for the TI.

      Hi Bryan, yes you would be better off with an AI. They are lighter and much easier to handle on land. On the water, the TI (Tandem island) is easily sailed by one person and has more room for any gear you might want to bring. But its a beast to get onto a beach cart and drag up the beach by yourself.
