  • The Old Rugged Cross † Hymn Tune Name: OLD RUGGED CROSS.
This beautiful and moving Hymn is one of my all time favorites and I bet yours too...
I had the HONOR to play it for my Mother's Funeral in 1995... Fortunately I had it committed to memory since the tears were rolling down my face so profusely... She loved this Hymn and sang it all the time in the house while doing house work or just relaxing in her favorite chair.
I am a Funeral Director and often played the Organ for Services and this Hymn was always requested.
Thank you for visiting and for subscribing to my video's for Hymn lovers like you.

It's a beautiful Hymn, Lance. Aye. There's something in the words when we sing , "Twas on that old Cross Jesus suffered and died, to pardon and sanctify me " that always bring a lump to my throat. A lad I knew many years ago told me that grown men in some of the Aberdeen Public Houses would be moved to tears when a lass from the Salvation Army would sing it to them on a Saturday night. Thanks again, Lance, and God bless. Charlie

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suffering and shame
And I love that old cross where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain
So I'll cherish the old rugged cross (rugged cross)
Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown
To the old rugged cross I will ever be true
It's shame and reproach gladly bear
Then he'll call me some day to my home far away
Where his glory forever I'll share
And I'll cherish the old rugged cross (rugged cross)
Till my trophies at last I lay down
And I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

This was my grandma's favorite song. She's probably mad that I don't go to church anymore 😂
Either way, I always get a tear in my eye when I hear this. Good playing!

On a different note, Lance, I can remember a friend's Funeral Service in a Church in Rural Aberdeenshire, not far from here, back in 2001, when the Lady Organist played many of the beautiful Scottish Psalm Tunes before the Service commenced. On that cold wintry morning, with the snow lying on the hills, it was so meaningful, Lance. God bless. Charlie, Aberdeen, Scotland

Great to be back on You Tube and hearing you again, Lance, after our hard-drive was damaged last Thursday for me not clicking on "LEAVE" after a Zoom Meeting. Thankfully, we've got it repaired and getting back to "normal". Plus we got our Flu Jabs yesterday. Hope you're keeping much better yourself, Lance, and able to delight us with your wonderful Organ skills. God bless. Charlie, Aberdeen, Scotland

The Old Rugged Cross was sung at Young Life in Escondido the Tuesday of Holy Week of 1990 as we dismissed in honor of our fallen sister Jessica Ditchkiss who was killed in a ca accident earlier that day. On another occasion where one of our members was lost, we sang When I Survey the Wondrous Cross to dismiss from our meeting as the parents requested our Area Director to have us sing this hymn.both are beautiful numbers.

I attended a Church Funeral today, Lance, and save for the Hymns which the deceased lady also loved, the Music was almost wholly secular, including "Hello Dolly." It was awful. It made the Kirk feel like a Concert Hall. Sad, when there are so many lovely Hymns and Sacred Music. I enjoy your playing very much, Lance, and it always uplifts me. Aye Yours, Charlie.

Oh that's awful! I don't understand why someone would want hello dolly at a funeral. Hymns to sing but not a secular service.

@@AGNETHAFALTSK0G I am willing to bet that the song held some significance to either the Deceased or the Family. I am also willing to bet that less than 8 People at My Wife's Funeral understood the real reason " On Eagles Wings " was played and while that is a common song at Funeral's it did mean something too Me and those Who knew Her the best. She was a great admirer of Birds of Prey and eagles in particular, Where We live They are becoming more common thankfully. I had seen Her weep at the beauty of an Eagle in flight. God Bless. Kevin

"To Pardon and Sanctify me" favorite part of the hymn. I would often listen to this song as I contemplated what it is God wants me to do with a call to ministry. This hymn was the opening song to my fathers funeral in 2012, it always gave me a sense of comfort.
