    I just went for my first ride on my AT standard model DCT & dropped it getting off from a start. I went for the clutch when the power was a little much, didn't have my foot on the back brake, went for the front brake, highsided it. Yeah. Well, at least I proved I could lift it & manhandle it back up the hill into my garage. I guess it's gonna be great for my deadlift. Luckily I have crash bars!

    Hey man, just found this channel! I did (almost) the same. Had a bike before, an yamaha mt 07 and wanted to start riding off-road and do some longer trips so, against the advise of everyone i went and got a brand new AT 1100 DCT (not AS). The people I ride with almost all ride smaller dual sport and enduro bikes and they keep telling me that I'm going to regret it and at some point get a smaller bike, but i just am happier and happier each time i ride it.
    Taking well structured training was key because i didn't grow up riding motorcycles off-road, so learning the techniques and then when riding alone taking some time to practice them by myself was super useful. So i started by taking a 2 day off-road riding course specifically targeted for big adventure bikes and it unblocked my riding ability a lot, then after a few months i took a day of training with a local off-road instructor. I think that every 6 months or so i'll do some more training. In my opinion this was the best investment i've done so far.
    Then moving away from the stock tires also made me feel much more comfortable while riding loose terrain. I'm still not confident on deep sand but shallow sand, dirt, small rocks are much less scary as i feel the bike much more planted on the ground. Originally i had the metzeler karoo street and as soon as i would hit a bit of shallow sand i would feel the front of the bike sliding. I switched to the Mitas E-10 that are super cheap in comparison and are still pretty acceptable on the road.
    Riding with others also helps me a lot, even the people that kinda "talk shit" about big bikes offroad! Everyone is super friendly and welcoming in my local riding community and its great to watch more experienced riders and to ask them for tips and discuss technique.
    I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos! Hit me up if you ever want to exchange ideas and experiences and if you ever see yourself in Europe, come to Portugal, its an off-road riding paradise!

      That would be so awesome to come ride with you in Portugal. I defiantly need more training in the off road area. I watch a lot of videos and try to implement what I learn. But I would love to go to a multi day camp. I want to get new tires too. But I think I will wait for spring for that... Maybe... I don't think I will be doing much riding here in Utah this winter... Time to get the skis out.

  • @durtyred86
    @durtyred86 Před 2 lety +6

    Man.... I'm in your EXACT situation. I initially intended to get the KLR-650 and while I still love it, the highway acceleration speed was a bit of a concern for me. I then adjusted my attention on the Tenere-700 but what do you know, sold out literally EVERYWHERE.... That's when I learned about the AT. I'm 6'2" 240ish pounds so I can flat foot this bike easily. As for the power, I feel with throttle discipline and riding within my ability I can minimize getting wicked leg tattoos like yours. 😜
    Seriously glad you're ok. We both know it could have been way worse in other scenarios... My thing is, I don't want to just outgrow a bike within months and have to sell/buy again. I'd rather much grow with my bike. The KLR almost covers literally everything I could want but that 75ish mph limitation just bothers me... I'm without a bike for now... If I can hold out long enough, good sales should be coming with the winter months... time will tell. Looking forward to you posting more my man. I've been digging through YT looking for someone that fits this exact bill and you're the first. Subbed and notifications turned on. I am definitely interested in knowing how you get along with the AT from here forward. Ride safe.

Thanks for the feedback and input! I did not think anyone but my family would ever see this. I am glad you found me. :)

    Good on ya! I'm in Hurricane and just got an Africa Twin this year too. I rode dirt bikes a little bit as a kid and then moved on to ATVs. Got good at that and wasn't sure if I had any dirt bike skills left. Took the MSF courses when I was 26 and got a 2002 VFR800 as my first road bike when I was 27. Some would have said that it was too much for a first bike but for me it worked out great because I was anal about training and safety gear and attitude and the people I rode with. Those things were key but it also helped that the VFRs are very smooth bikes that are easy to ride fast. Anyway, I sold that ten years ago when I was in Texas and they didn't have any fun roads. Now that I'm back in Utah I decided an adventure bike was the way to go for sure. So many thousands of miles of dirt and pavement to enjoy in the west.
    Over the summer I've been riding the same jeep trail close to town over and over again to practice. Its got slow corners in soft stuff, some steep rocky spots and a few other things. I'm slowly learning when to sit and dab and when to stand. That was probably the biggest ah ha for me.

    Ballsy first bike for sure. I have one. It’s my 45th bike! I dropped a old BMW on the same side as you, BTW, and had similar bruising despite the low speed. Taught me a lesson for sure and I’m 63. Riding lesson are a great thing. Without you get into bad habits even with more miles which then become hard to break. I’d suggest decent crash bars (not the stock Honda items) which are way cheaper than breaking plastics. Always wear proper protection including solid riding boots. Shins, ankles and knees are very delicate not to mention back, shoulders and elbows. I speak from painful experience (and stupidity). I look forward to more of your adventures. Having said that tho I also had my first spill riding offroad with the 390 haha. I am glad I got through that on a small bike. It is pretty crazy how fast the bike can go sideways and throw you off on loose stuf if you give it too much gas.

    Not to bad for a first hike at all and as far the T7 yeah I almost did the same thing and went with another motorcycle. If they could manufacture and deliver the bikes faster there would be five times as many out there on the streets. However, enjoy your ride and don’t bother to much what day say in the Facebook groups and other forums. I myself bought a T7 and have been doing some off-road without any protection at all to the bike not even boots in my feet. So it’s all up to your capabilities and know your limits. I think you have just learned some of that, luckily it ended well for you and the bike. Also, there is no shame in taking some riding classes, we learn, adopt and it saves us from disaster. There is a trade off on any bike it seems. You can not have a really good off road bike and a really good tour bike. The AT strikes a balance that is just right for me. I would love it if it were lighter so I could manage the off road better and I also wish it were more comfortable on the long road trips. So I guess that is just right.
