Bill Duke Remembers Getting the News about Emmett Till's Murder (Flashback)

- In today's flashback, Bill Duke reflected on growing up in Poughkeepsie, NY during the 1940s and 1950s. His parents moved north to escape the oppression of the Jim Crow south equipped with just a 2nd and 3rd-grade education, respectively. Bill Duke opened up about some his early experiences dealing with racism and how some whites defied the racist logic of the time as well.
He recalled what it was like being a pre-teen when the Emmitt Till story made national headlines. Duke tried holding back his emotions while remembering Emmitt Till's murder and said he could never forget the incident or the horrific images. He also pointed out that the White woman who accused him of whistling at her came forward years later and admitted she lied. Duke said it was a difficult time but acknowledged that Till's open-casket funeral brought a lot of attention to the abuse and oppression Blacks were facing in the south.

My dad was born 1939 1st grade education and was working for the whiteman after that . My dad told me when he was small he had to step off the sidewalk and now if whites passed . My dad passed April 2 2021 and his stories was amazing. I miss him so much

I find the brevity of the interview interesting. Was there more to the interview not posted? Why did the interviews have to ask him more than once about his "timeline", that waa time that could have been filled with more content. However, I appreciate knowing the perspective of another contemporary of Emmett Till.

The depth of this man is something to behold. Major respect to Bill Duke, Major. I admire men of this caliber. God did a truly spectacular job when he created Bill.
I drive by what’s left of the Bryant Store and Emmett’s sign/memorial marker daily. I wasn’t aware this was where it happened until I first moved here in 2006. To this day, a certain demographic plays down what happened or has an, “It’s in the past, leave it there” attitude. I don’t know how they go around oblivious to what happened because I think about what happened to Emmett every single day.
People should let go of the past.

Just 4 months ago this year, a white dietitian was working at the VA hospital in Mishewaka Indiana, was passing out tomato plants to all of the white veterans, but did not offer or give any of the "Black" veterans any of those tomato plants. I reported it to the VA leadership and NOTHING was done about it...in fact, they even took up for her. The struggle is still real even today.
