I am a Puerto Rican man, I am fair skinned and could pass for white and or Italian etc.. I experienced a touch of racism I believe only twice. It surely is a horrible thing. When Mr Dukes tried as a child to lighten his skin, is just a devastating thing. I can't imagine being in such a position as a parent during such terrible times of racism. As a parent it must tear at ones soul to know your child is going to go through severe obstacles and unfair treatment. It must be really heart wrenching to have to explain to your young child that the world is going to be cruel to you because of your skin color. I could write a novel on the impact, but will try to limit my response. Two things really stuck out to me. One, which is what aligns with my established beliefs, was the phrase his parents raised him on. "We are no better than anyone else on this earth, but nobody is better than us either." (Obviously better stated at the individual level). But what really opened my eyes, was his mention of the way fears and experiences can be handed down through generations inherently. As I search for my blind spots, that is one I'd never considered or came across. I made a naive assumption that these traits were only embedded through indoctrination.
    Watching this was one of my steps to better understand the problem and the divide in humankind. I can only imagine the generational pain that a twisted society can cause. I feel sorrow for the black community for having to endure it. We have to break that cycle, and move forward together...somehow. Going back to what Mr. Duke said, we are no better or worse than each other. We are all part of this grand blessing we are able to experience. May we all work on ourselves to become more compassionate and caring to those we have the hardest time relating to! The greatest is Love!

    • @FreedomChaser77
      @FreedomChaser77 Před 4 lety

      @@andyteakel3957 Honestly, no, but I didn't take his explanation to mean that they were forced (I may have to go back and listen to that portion again.) What I heard was that some slaves looked for that opportunity, because a lighter skinned child, and their parent, was treated better by the slave "owner." This, as I understood it, created a divide between those in the field and those that were treated better as "house slaves." This, if I'm thinking through it, likely created a class issue within the race. I could guess that the house class felt they were better than the field class. And, potentially, stepped on the field class at every chance, to maintain their status? Being an outsider I am humbled to admit that my assessment and understandingis wrong. What are your thoughts?

    When I was in high school to me being a dark-skin dude was unattractive. I had women who would say I wasn't black enough or I was too white. The way I acted. Some people made fun of my skin tone. I used to Google ways to make my skin lighter so I can fit in. Or hide away from the Sun or come on bleach just by a little bit. I hated the color of my skin. I didn't hate being a black man. I hated that I was dark skin. I took years to love myself. I don't care what people say about my skin anymore.

      What Bill Dukes was talking about genetically transferred behavior, is chains on the brain from slavery. Each generation, from slavery has been freeing themselves of chains. I think the 60s was the best era where there was an abundance of black pride, esp. when James Brown, put out, "Say It Loud". Now it seems things have drifted far from that road, and you see too many clones, trying to fit into some movie star image they saw, and just don't realuze their natural self is 100% more beautiful, than a fabricated image. I don't even know how God feels about this, but seems to me you're rejecting what God made as beautiful. Everything God made is beautiful. Ugly is not what He makes. But if a person choses to believe a lie said about their appearance, that's on them. Whose report will you believe.

I know what i went through because of it. So i asked other ethnicities how they felt. Everything from brazilians, filipinos and Indians on and on. They feel the same! The evidence is whats on TV. Visit these countries and see what the common person looks like and see what the successful ones look like. Watch whats on a filipino or a indian tv channel or a movie. Lighter skin plays a big role in success. Without it its generally believed you HAVE to work SOOO much harder or be that much better.
