To be fair, even if Woll is your guy for the future, a guy like Markstrom is not a bad idea for the Leafs. Especially if they can get Calgary to retain some of it.
Think about what happened in Boston with Swayman. When Tuukka retired Swayman had already proved he had NHL talent but, what he hadn't done was prove he could do it over the course of a full season and into the playoffs yet. So, the Bruins signed Linus Ullmark to a 4-year $5M AAV deal.
Just, like you Steve I hated the idea of spending that much cap on a goalie when we have a guy like Swayman sitting in the wings but, it turned out to be the best possible thing for Sway's development. He never had to take on more than he could handle because Ullmark was always there as well.
Now, Sway has turned into one of the best in the league and Ullmark is one of the hottest names on the trade market. That signing turned out to be an absolute gem. Even if we don't trade Ullmark and let him walk as an UFA, it was still a great signing.
Even if Ullmark walks in Free agency, you got his worth. It's crazy how good that turned out to be for Boston. INSANE! At the time, ullmark was kinda unproven a bit, but he turned out to be a diamond in the rough.
I don't disagree with either of your assessments. It would be a great asset to acquire a Markstrom or Sarros type.
I unfortunately think that they can not do any of this if they monetarily go into next season with the core 4. Then, still try and get defensemen as well.
Just my opinion, great thoughts, though.
If Saros decides not to take a discount and stay with Nashville, I think the Leafs should look into that. He fits with the Leafs window for a cup. I know brossoit is good, but you need something better. I know that Saros has been overworked in Nashville, so you could potentially give Woll those starts. You could start with the 50 games and 38 games or even 55 games for Saros and 33 for Woll depending on how things go. You have two solid goalies that can take care of business. The only thing is convincing Marner to waive his NMC.
yeah I agree, I don't see Calgary doing any dealing with the Leafs.. so, let's say they do sign Brossoit.. Can they run with this depth ( Woll, Brossoit, Jones and Hildeby)? So, let's say Woll gets 40 games, Brossoit get 25 games? You can give Hildeby say 7-8 games just to see what he is, where he is develpment wise. That leaves Jones to take 9-10 games? That is if everyone stays healthy, but it's a huge IF. What do you do if/ when Woll either faces an injury that has him out 10+ games? Are they confident running with Brossoit and Jones for part of the season? If Woll struggles or has injury issues this season, what then? Move him to a backup position, load managing him to 20-25 games and run with Brossoit? He is eager to play more games but what if he struggles/ fails? There are a lot of tangibles in this that have to be considered. Do they sign Brossoit for 3 years, give Woll this season to see if he can handle top minutes and make a decision from there? They could, then try to address it at free agency but who would be available at that time? I would imagine Brossiot will be signed by someone before then. If they did run with Woll, Brossoit and Jones and their 3 goalies, they could wait until Marner, Tavares and Reilly come off the books ( not sure if they'd be interested in bringing Reilly back or not) and they would free up a ton of cap sapce to then go look for a "sexier" name in net? This cap situation they dug themselves into has really handcuffed them

It may very well be the Leafs during the 2024-25 regular season use 4, or even 5, goalies as one or more are capable of starting @ least 20 games but none end up being capable of starting more than 30. How well the Leafs do during July’s free agent frenzy period remains unclear although goaltending, defence and depth scoring remain clear needs.
@@Vegland thanks.. yeah, burning that 1st year of his entry level would have to be avoided.. that's why I figured 7-8 games would/should give them a glimpse into what they have with him.. I wouldn't keep him up no matter how good he plays.. give him another year down in the AHL
Sorry but brossoit is a better goalie right now then woll , woll is good but way too injury prone man cant trust him and when hes good its not like hes wow omg hes like top 5 star goalie hes way over hyped for such little sample size
Hey guys love the show I agree with Steve on getting Markstrom if it happens it happens but I doubt it.
I don't see why the Leafs wouldn't be at least up to date on Markstrom. Brad has always done his due diligence since he first got the job in Calgary. I think Jesse's right, the reporting is just overblowing it.
It is completely reasonable to assume Treliving called Conroy to see what's going on with Markstrom. It is also completely reasonable to assume someone in the Toronto media reported that conversation means the Leafs are trying to trade for him.
Maybe Toronto is in on Markstrom, maybe not. But either way it is completely reasonable to assume the Leafs and Flames have at least had a conversation about him.
You guys always talk about the trades that never happen for your team. Goaltending depth is a clear weakness for the Leafs. The Capitals have a plethora of goalies(they are considered one of the best teams generating NHL goalies), as do the Sabres(though might not be possible since they are a division rival). Regarding the Caps, you do a Marner deal and get back maybe Darcy Kuemper ++. Kuemper had a down year, but he's not washed up. He can be a stopgap till Woll or Hildeby come around.

It's the morning of game 7, 2025. Woll gets hurt. Who do you want starting that game? I think some of these scenarios get you through the regular season, but I don't think you can rely on Woll in the playoffs until he proves he can stay healthy.

No. Kings are my 2ndary team to the Caps. Talbot will be age 37 and needs to go into a backup role for a team.
@@dmonsef fair enough. don't remember seeing him play this season and the age is what had me wondering but his stats didn't look terrible for the amount of games he played
@@SamSmith-jk3lf Talbot was overused and he wore down by the seasons end and into the playoffs. Also, Kings play a defense first game and counter-attack, so Talbot's numbers can be a bit misleading.

From the flames perspective this makes no sense. Who are the leafs going to trade? Marner? Calgary already has an overpaid dilettante.

Unless the flames want a 2nd round pick for Markstorm at 50% retained, they can kick rocks. Don't want to deal with them anymore especially if Toronto has to pay any kind of premium.
How many seasons has Woll played without injury? Correct me if I'm wrong but he has an injury every year. He needs to be a backup for a season and not get injured before you think he can be a starter or a 1 ab James Blake. End of story. Earn it. Prove your worth then you get the cookie.

He has an NMC is in his mid 30’s and has no future with Calgary timeline wise. They have a guy in Wolf who deserves as many reps as possible next season. And a lot of the fan base as well as personnel seem to be found of Vladar.
It only makes sense to sell off Markstrom and make him want out even with the NMC.

Panthers and Oilers series have shown that a top-10 goalie is more valuable than a top-20 forward. So instead of paying say Willie 11.5M (or MM 12M), why not pay say Sorokin 10M?

goalie are also a lot more unpredictable. Goalies fall off a cliff or go from average to amazing for a year or 2 far more frequently than regular skaters do
Nah. Leafs need go for a goalie in the $5 million per year range and a goalie that has experience.
@@mking1982098The Canucks and Winnipeg Jets have, at least from the 2020-21 NHL season, respectively used Thatcher Demko and Connor Hellebuyck as their main goalies. Each team has won a playoff series over that time span but neither has yet won a Cup.
As a Devils fan, I really hope TOR gets fleeced for Markstrom and NJ keeps their #10 OA pick.
Toronto needs an established goalie but why do we always seem to believe that everything is always a special situation or emergency. Toronto should NOT trade any asset or prospect to land a goalie. There are enough competent goal tenders available in free agency THAT COST NOTHING BUT THE CAP HIT. If you are going to use assets or prospects in the trade gamble, then use them to get a couple of defencemen who will stay home and defend and a couple of forwards who will stand in the slot, deflect pucks or create chances off the rebound. Yes, FLA has an outstanding goalie, but look at their defence, their forwards and how most of their goals are scored.
Woll can be a good goalie, but his stability is his biggest problem! From what we have seen so far, Woll can maybe give you 30 starts! Brossoit has never played more than 25 games in a season. Leafs need a stable #1 goalie. Woll can be strung along more and learn from a stable vet.
Here's the thing. Bolts, Panthers, Bruins all have #1 goalies in Vasilevskiy, Bobrovsky and Swayman. Leafs are competing with those 3 teams, so having question marks about the goaltending does not help in competing in the division and trying win a couple rounds consistently. Leafs have salary cap room that opened up from expired LTIR contracts and free agents. Stabilize first the goaltending with the cap room available and then address the other areas needed. Leafs keep trying to patch up their roster with younger/cheaper contracts since they front loaded so much salary to 4 players that mostly fail in the playoffs. Marner was made the scapegoat(my personal belief is wrongfully so), so the damage is done amongst the team and therefor he needs to be traded to open more salary cap room and bring back some good return(he's not a garbage player).
I really don’t feel that a Woll and Brossoit is the answer in net. I believe woll does have the talent but he’s made of glass thus far. He does need one more year of coddling and perhaps could be resigned cheap for 3 years… Markstrom is a guy I’d be targeting for a decent price or Ullmark if you can swing 5-6 per gor him… I wouldn’t wanna to risk going into next season without a bonafide number one.
We all want the sexy goalie name. I just don’t think markstrom or John Gibson are that at all. So I am much more for the brossoit/stolarz as part of tandem and getting the sexy name on defense instead of

Samsonov is a head case! You got him for no trade assets, it didn't work so you move on. Markstrom has the rep for being a good #1 goalie and he probably wants out/Wolf pushes him out with the Flames.

@@ThePalisky Flames were not a good enough team throughout the season, so Markstrom's numbers suffered. You want somebody good, you have to pony up. If you want someone less good(Markstrom), you still have to give up something reasonable. Frankly, the Leafs have the offensive support that Markstrom doesn't have with the Flames.
I'm just giving the argument why the Leafs should go after Markstrom. He's a possible option, but I feel the Leafs have other equal or better outside options, but Shanny needs to allow Treliving to be creative in making a deal.

Leafs haven't done any major trades since '92 and '94 with Gilmore and Sundin! Time to do one now in getting a goalie. Marner needs to be traded, as the damage is done within the team. The team needs a big shakeup and stop doing this nitpick type stuff! I'm not even a Leafs fan, but it's nauseating to see this team like this as it reminds too much of my Washington Redskins being in turmoil for 30+ years till now.

Why waste assets on a trade for a goalie, just stupidity. Sign a UFA goalie for one season and see how Woll does health wise and number wise. Hildeby after another year in the AHL barring major problems should be ready for 25-26. Leafs already have no draft picks and prospect pool is very weak. They also have other goalies in the pipeline that look like they could be NHL quality.

I know they discussed it on this show in particular but you don’t always need a big money goalie to win a cup. As a matter of fact for many years that wasn’t the case at all.
Toronto just spent so much money at forward that they’ve been starting bums and reclamation projects.
Trading Marner for Soros or more assets for Marsktrom is not a net positive move when your D is still an overpaid Reilly and six other bums.
Build from the D out with a couple 5 million dollar starters and you’re set.
If anything, if you’re trading Marner to Nashville they should be asking for Askarov, instead of Soros.
I respectfully disagree. IMO goalie is by far the most important position in hockey, and there's no close second. The Leafs need to stop bargain shopping for goalies, and get serious about getting a superstar back there... no matter the cost
