Wunderschöne live Aufführung dieser fein komponierten Klaviersonaten im inspirierenden Tempo mit gut artikuliertem Anschlag und perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik. Echt unvergleichlicher Pianist!
I met Emil Grigorievech sometimes in 1980s in Helsinki, had a long talk about Rakhaminov - and Volvo service ;) Later in 80s I heard him in Savolinna by a spectacularly fine Beethoven -recital + two (?) Mozart fantasies as encores, next to nobody. He may not have been the greatest musician but as a pianist he was a real pro og highest quality. This Scarlatti is a testimony of this.
That's very interesting! If you like, please elaborate! It would be great if you could tell us what you discussed with him and what he had to say about Rachmaninoff (and about the service of Volvo). By the way, I do consider Gilels as a great musician, not just a great pianist. He did a lot of chamber music as well.
Overall very nice, but the tempo in the K27 is just glacial. I prefer the Michelangeli, even with the liberty he takes with the unscored arpeggio at the end.
That's not even a fair comparison. Michelangeli was at his absolute best when playing Scarlatti. I'm not sure if there has ever been another pianist that plays that Sonata better than he does.
Okay, check out 10pianists incomparison's posting of the sonata. Is that fair enough for you? Or Alice Ader... Or Murray Perahia... I love Gilels and just expected something more interesting from someone who was so incredibly gifted.
Ron M No I meant comparing any pianist to Michelangeli playing Scarlatti isn't really fair. HIs playing is just perfected suited for Scarlatti. Well it's perfectly suited for other composers also. His Schumann recordings are spectacularly great. If you heard this blind not knowing who the pianist was, you would never think it was one of greatest pianists ever playing it.
It's an absolutely fair comparison, showing two great pianists with strikingly differing approaches to a piece of music: everyone who's ever played this sonata is somewhere on the continuum between the extremes of Gilels (spacious, rife with sostenuto pedal) and Michelangeli (quicksilver-like). Unless of course you want to go around YT to negatively, and stupidly, comparing different great artists to Michelangeli, which is what you like doing
