Gilels and Richter were the two pre-eminent pianists from Soviet Russia during the 1960s and 70s. Gilels was an unfailingly perceptive and wide ranging interpreter, also when it came to Prokofiev, Rachmaninov and Scriabin there was very little to choose between these two great artists. Richter however could be erratic, unpredictable and controversial, yet when everything came together and he was in top form this unique visionary could hold audiences in rapt attention, then there was the extraordinary technical mastery he possessed.
This recital by Gilels is one of the truly memorable events from the second half of the last Century.
I consider it one of the best concert recording I've heard. Gilels brought the majesty of Russian work to a whole new level.
Gilels is able to play through the piano and reveal the line as well as the depth in the music. A genius.
was...... he isn´t with us anymore.
he is one of the greatest classical pianists ...... of all the currently heralded artists today, none come close to him
John Renehan Gilels is a mountain as big as the Mount Everest and I’m only a small hill as tall a two story building, but I’ll grow and become as great as him.
@bill Bloggs Hamelin is not even close to Gilels. He is a big technitian but you cant really compare them. Gilels was a better artis that cared for the quallity of his sound like no one else.
@bill Bloggs Hamelin and Argerich. I prefer both with pretty much all works over Gilels, who I often found too serious and maybe even a little dry.
Simply magnificent musician in the world!!!!!! Truely!!
@@danlo5Seco?
The Bach-Siloti prelude in B minor just captivated me, how enchanting and beautiful it is to listen to this magical piece by Gilels' golden sound!
The same...I didn’t know him before to my shame
His sound is really powerful, magic, deep and so brilliant. He was really one of the greatest pianist of his time. It could be said: of all time. Thanks for uploading this marvellous concert
I love him the greatest pianist in my heart
Gilels : what a pianist, what a musician! Probably the greatest one.
Brunepi you are totally mistaken. He in not probably the greatest one. He is undoubtedly the greatest of all.
darren motise Who is, in your view?
darren motise is that what you know? I don’t know that there’s no “the greatest”
@@MARTIN201199 if we would consider the age of recording, Horowitz is quite likely to be titled 'the greatest' by many people. However, we don't know what was before recording and we don't know what will come in the future. On top of that, at the end of the day art remains a subjective thing and everyone will have to pick their greatest for themselves
darren motise the fact the you say that some pianists have equaled or surpassed Gilels contradicts what you said before. Because if someone surpasses me, that means he is greater. So it’s silly that you say a silly thing.
Amazing concert played by the great Emil Gilels ❤
One of the greatest artist of our time.
Alongside with Sofronitsky, the best.
Maravilloso pianista!
Such a fantastic pianist !
He is a true artist!
What an extraordinary concert, and fantastic performance of Rachmaninoff! What a beautiful sound throughout!
his interpretation of the Rachmaninov 3rd piano concerto is one of the most brilliant ever !!!
Thank you for posting this concert. As a pianist myself I am far more moved by performances from past greats Gilels and Horowitz than the modern perfect technicians.
Edward NYC present recordings move me to listen the old ones.
Amazing playing. Extraordinary control of sound and tonal beauty. I've only heard such playing before in recordings by Hofmann, or possibly Moiseiwitsch. I had tickets to hear Gilles in recital at Carnegie Hall in New York in the mid-1980s, but sadly he passed away suddenly shortly before the date of the concert.
I’ve never seen such a passion in any other pianist. I love how he pours out his soul over each piece he plays.
When you listen his Beethoven’s sonatas you realize that there’s fire in his heart.
I absolutely agree. And what is very beautiful is that he is so sober at the same time, it is extremely interior
Best Beethoven sonata no.26 ❤❤❤❤
Very powerful and sparklingly clear performance.A constant reminder from my piano teacher !
That Rachmaninov Prelude in G minor I just love
a priceless video, the immortal Gilels at the peak of his powers.
Thank you so much for uploading this great concert!
Over time, I have learned that the pianists and artists who are the most endearing to us are those that effectively convey what They have to say through the music, while honoring the composer's instructions in the score (if any), and the stylistic conventions that existed (if any) during that period (I recognize that this is debatable). Technical bravura and accuracy without any idea of what You want to say through the music is simply insipid.
Agree wholeheartedly
Personal and musical nobility.
Thanks very much for the upload.
Wonderful. Thank you for this concert.

Amo Emil Gilels
Gilels details the music while jkeeping the sense of the global architecture. His renditions are very coherent.
Exactly! Very much like Richter, I believe that Gilels and Richter belong to a league of their own.
@@hassansoliman970 yes, just add Rubinstein ( mentor and fiend of Gilels, and dear friend of Rachmaninov’s), and now Sokolov ( Gilels was his mentor and friend). They all belong to The pianists Olympus forever.
@@hassansoliman970 Richter and Gilels studied from the same teacher Heinrich Neuhus.
Magnificent interpretation.
a giant... love the tempo of prokof'ev sonata...
grande pianista!

A magnificent pianist.
Bravo.
Brutal
Complex organism battering a machine. So beautiful.
No wonder, Emil was a recipient of Rachmaninov’s medal, as the best performer of his compositions!
along with 100% of other professional pianists, anyone would think just by looking at them play, that they composed the pieces themselves!
🥰
O my god!
Pour Marie-Laure qui l'aimait tant
39:12 The most beautiful tune ever done!
If the music did not already possess importance, Gilels' interpreting would confer it
Have you ever seen an audience in such a state rapt attentiveness? is leads me to ask how much great musicians of Russia owe to such exceptional audiences.
In Russia, they could always appreciate the beautiful.

This is Emil's greatest performance and afterwards declined rapidly and fell into obscurity. Any truth to that? Gilles died 8 years after this in 1985 at age 68.
He had at least one heart attack around this time. Probably he was not the same afterwards. I have seen a video of him playing after the heart attack. The playing was beautiful but he looked anguished--- although that may have been the Russian soul

What make of piano is he playing? Dean Brunel
looks to be Steinway, giveaway for me is the small lyre logo emblem on the side of the instrument facing the audience, there's another Gilels concert video on youtube where he plays an August Forester, which is a marvelous instrument as well
It's made out of wood
Thank you for posting this concert. As a pianist myself I am far more moved by performances from past greats Gilels and Horowitz than the modern perfect technicians.
@bill Bloggs then check out Trifonov, Abduraimov and Levit. They are modern pianists with good technique, but they all are very musical in their own way. I've listened to countless Rach 2&3 performances and I've found none that I like more than Trifonov's and Abduraimov's tone control is amazing, he might be on par with volodos and that's something. And Levit's Beethoven is so good, everything just sounds right. The big names taking the stage of general public (Lang Lang, yuja Wang and Valentina lisitsa) are unfortunately the most present, but when looking for art, one must be prepared to dig deeper
Quasi diametralmente. Amando visceralmente Gilels mi è difficile fare altrettanto con Horovitz
@bill Bloggs Yuja Wang's interpretation of the Prelude in G minor, Op.23, No.5 was much better and, unlike Gilels, she performed it without mistakes.
@@thingiezz Yuja is not a favourite of mine but god I love listening to her recordings of Prokofiev Piano Concerto no 2.
