Well mine caught fire today
nothing like a brush fire to handle your string trimmer duties.
Hey it got the job done lol
An engineer who doesn't know to straighten line to pass it through a series of holes cant possibly be an engineer, can he? This fella looks like he can make an all day project out of a cup of coffee.
But it will be a perfect coffee. Great job on the edit - another person who appreciates perfection :)

I guess you could say that about anything
@@Kitearmy L
I wonder what kind of Engineer you are? First, the wimpy charger is a good thing. You want to charge a battery as slow as possible. Slow reduces the heat inside a battery causing it to last a lot longer. Also As soon as you use the battery, you put it on the charger so that the next time you use the battery, it is charged. Second, it looks like you can put the handle onto the bar either way so that it is angled up or down. Third, when you trimmed with the Ego, you kept the head far away so that you used the end of the string to trim with. Some of the scenes with the Ryobi you had the head of the trimmer right up against the solid object you were trimming around causing more wear and tear on the head/motor. Fourth, the Ego is $250, the Ryobi is $190, both at Amazon prices. For the $60 difference, I would glue a little guide into the Ryobi so the string would feed right through. That is the Engineer in me.
All good points - But they are both $199.
This thing smokes the Ryobi: www.lowes.com/pd/EGO-5-Amp-60-in-Corded-Electric-String-Trimmer/5000200365
I also agree with the idea of adding the guide tube on the head - why do you think the Ryobi engineers did not?
Last question Jim - if I was to send you either the EGO or Ryobi which one would you prefer?
@@Kitearmy Ryobi, But I don't want one and I don't need one. I have an 18V Ryobi.

You do know that you can straighten the string before feeding and put the handle on for right or left handed use? You did say you are an engineer, right?
I will bet you $1000 on the handle - it only goes on one single direction. I bet you won't pay or admit that you are wrong
An engineer can design a building but it doesn't mean they know how to actually build it. The way he handled and flailed with this would not make me comfortable putting him in the construction field with a tool in hand. Is this the easiest of trimmers to use, probably not. Was this an epic fail, no...............just operator error.
@@eyegrey48 Yep probably - though the best products eliminate operator error as an issue
@@Kitearmy I just got the carbon fiber edition which I believe is a slightly upgraded model to the one you have. All the heads work perfectly fine and internally on the string trimmer feed there is a little tunnel the string passes through when the arrows are lined up. Both heads click on and off fairly easily.
@Daniel Bodega Because I own you - and that's what condescending dicks do
Iâve had this trimmer for two years now and have had zero issues. I use it weekly around the yard and at the farm. Itâs also much less expensive than EGO. Itâs also compatible with my old tool heads. I would suggest before you make a video about something that you actually use it for a period of time. Btw- it takes less than a minute to spool new line. Itâs working just fine for me and Iâm not going broke buying overpriced EGO products.
Thanks for sharing - yep EGO is expensive and is not for everyone
I have the same trimmer and I have no issues with it sometimes itâs good to use common sense. How could you try to put the line in with out getting it straight first. I hope you never have to feed a string through a needle.LoL

I have that trimmer and have never had an issue with the line feed.
Must be user error.
or defective model
@@Kitearmy I have issues with mine every time. Now I cant even get it open to get broken string out of it.
I own the predecessor model of your Ryobi 40v trimmer and it uses the same line feed design. I have installed string 5-6 times over the past couple of years and it literally takes seconds. I too am an engineer and was surprised by your lack of problem solving skills. All you had to do was straighten the string end before inserting it! Instead, you tried to jam the crooked line in and probably bent the line further. When you tossed the trimmer in a moment of childish frustration, you also tossed out any credibility as a competent reviewer.
I guess we are equally disappointed in each other. I would think that an engineer would understand that some people purchase this will not be as knowledgably as you (possibly me) and Ryobi should engineer products that are simple. This tool is not that (the yellow crank says it all) You have lost any credibility as as competent commenter.
I just purchased the carbon fiber version and it seems to have a plastic port for the string to flow through easily. I put my own string in and it was pretty quick and easy. Also the charger with the carbon fiber seems to be the larger quick charger and it brought it from 1/4 dots to 3 dots in like 30 mins. I didn't finish charging it because I had another battery and wanted to keep it semi charged until I use it next weekend. I'm already invested in the Ryobi system with a handful of attachments I have and have used with their old version which works well still as a backup.
I have spent hours and hours during hot summer heat trying to change string on other trimmers mostly the Stihl trimmers and this one seemed to be easy mode compared to those imo.
I can see that making sense if you are already in the 40v platform
"Maybe I'm making it look hard?" You nailed it with that statement. Good luck with the clickbait titles.

even after your review I went ahead and purchased it just because I already have the power head. I was loving it until I had to replace the string and had similar issues as you did. I took the spool off and realized my string had missed the center of the spool mechanism. simple alignment issue and back in business.
Yeah if you want to futz with it you can make it work - but the EGO just works every time and is super easy
@@Kitearmy But i dont have any Ego batteries. Since i already own a Ryobi lawn mower, and the quick charger for this battery, and you can remove the head to install the line, i see no issues and placed an order. Pretty easy obstacles to overcome imo! Its the power im after. I felt the 18V trimmer was too slow. Maybe the fast charger is not released in the US yet? Seems Europe gets access to Ryobi tools earlier than the US.
@@retroMartin Yeah, if you already bought into the Ryobi 40v line I can see that

Just bought this exact model a few weeks ago. Main reason I stuck with the Ryobi was already had their 40V Leaf Blower which I liked and had that extra battery plus a more powerful charger.
So far has worked great for me, only have to wind up the spool once and took a moment to get the string through but not too bad, although may have just been in comparison to my older manual wind up model. Hope i'll still feel the same way by the end of the summer.
BTW always love your in depth reviews. Keep it up!

I just got mine yesterday and had no issues swapping the heads on it and 3 hours of charge time is fine since I go more than that between cuttings. My dad got this trimmer for the Expand-It system mainly. He did not like the head system at all. Luckily head from his Craftsman gas trimmer works on the Expand-It system on this trimmer. He like the Craftsman head since you can load 0.105 string on the head easily. It lasts for a long time unless you hit concrete. He is only about 1/3 or 1/2 of way done with the spool of line that he bought like 15 years ago, and I believe the spool was around 500 or 700 feet of line, but the label is no long on the spool since it had been in the weather a few times.
I just get this yesterday waiting it to delivered. Have the older version but they market this one as 3x more power and i have a cultivator im planing to use this head on.
Cool - let us know how it works out
Aren't the white arrows on the sides supposed to be aligned (and not in the locked position) when you want to feed the line through? Yours was in the locked position.

Good review and a correct review.
i bought this trimmer beginning of last year. iot looks like they changed the design on the head mine looks nothing like this the center is solid you only have to ring 2 holes it pops off super easy so i always pop the head off start the string pop it back on then load
That is probably the solution
Will you test this with the edger attachment. My Greenworks has the edger attachment and it sucks. Constantly stops as it does not have enough torque to cut through thick and over grown grass. I'm wonder if the Ryobi suffers in the same manner.
some day
I discovered dutch bump heads and get standard light heads that use heavier line and decreases rotational mass. Surprisingly, one load of pro line with a standard head the pros usually use will last about as long as a full bump feed full of that crap line they have to use. The ones with 3 pieces of large line doubled over gives 6 cutting tips instead of two and bigger tougher line. It increases the power and battery life of the trimmer as well due to that rotational mass decrease. I didn't like the bump feed head either but I don't like any of the bump feeds anymore.
I've got the same trimmer and it takes about 1-2 minutes to load string. It has tons of power and run time especially with a 6 ah battery. I also have the fast charger so I can charge my batteries quicker. I have plenty to trim around on my 3 1/2 acre yard. I use mine with other attachments like a pole saw, small tiller for flower beds and long reach hedge trimmer. There's nothing wrong with it. I've had mine for 2 years. I had an earlier version of this trimmer that I had for about 4 years. I gave it to my son when he bought his first house 2 years ago. I'm not claiming it to be the absolute greatest, but it is a very good trimmer.
27-year-old wife loves the Ryobi over the DeWalt. Ryobi's battery lasts longer and is able to trim around the house, 2 40 foot containers, 57 trees, and 100 yards of entry fence. Before the battery goes dead. Puts it on the charger and mows and then takes the battery off the charger and puts it on the blower. Plan enough energy to blow off around the house, carports and porches. She got to full trimmings out of 1 head of string from the factory. Today was her 1st day to have to reload it. She didn't have a problem and said it was much easier than the DeWalt tremor.
The battery last twice as long and the reloading of the tremor are much easier than the DeWalt
Yeah - Ryobi can work
Have you fully inserted the accessories when removing the accessories
I followed the instructions
Although I'm a Ryobi fan, they don't hit the mark on all their tools. I have a 2019 version of the 40v brushless attachment capable trimmer. I bought it for the battery and power head. I mainly use the power head for the tiller, brush cutter, and power sweeper attachments. I have other trimmers I use all the time, so I've only used this trimmer attachment a couple of times and have not even had to respool the string. I bought this kit on sale which at the time was cheaper than buying the battery alone. Go figure. Anyway, decent power head and now I have an extra battery for my Ryobi chainsaw. Appreciate you reviewing the shortcomings of these products.
I was actually frustrated - wish this was a better product

Hey, did you have to break the thing or does it come apart like that? I wouldn't mind taking it apart every now and then to reload, assuming it doesn't destroy the tool.
It is supposed to come apart for service
I have the 1st and 2nd Gen of these. I skipped the string and bought the brush head due to my yard being a jungle. I always had plenty of power, and multiple batteries, so the charge time wasn't an issue. Looking at your video I can see the issues you are having, but it is an Expand-It.
I agree - maybe the quality is better in other models
How it's holding up for you?
Seems they changed the charger, mine takes 30 mins to charge for the 4ah battery. Maybe they fixed some problems?
Seriously disagree with some points made here. I own this model and The heads are not that hard to put on. Secondly just get the blades and will not have to worry about loading string. I can understand though pointing out that the string channel should have been engineered better, but this model is not a fail.

For the sake of keep all tools to ryobi can you use the 40v battery on any of the 18v tools?
nope - I would not consider if you only have the 18v - crumby build quality
Funny but IMHO the ryobi trimmer head is the best in the market. Some people like fixed line, some the plastic blades and some the spool line. Ryobi present the three options in one trimmer head. Super easy to change from one option to the other. Super fast to load and to change the line. The original batteries are expensive at Home Depot. but you can find them at eBay quite cheap.
With the fast charger, the 4ah/144wh batteries charges in about 30 minutes. The 6ah/216wh batteries change in about an hour. For most things you can run the ryobi trimmer on low speed, giving you plenty of run time. At high speed you get the power to deal with the most demanding jobs.
Things I do not like; (1) The knob to tightens the attachments to the upper part is plastic. The should go back to the full metal one used in previous models. (2) The spring in the trimmer head is too soft, I replaced it with a stronger one. (3) assembly in china.... not much quality control. As a result many units will get to the store with malfunctions. So if you buy your trimmer there, there is a change to you will have to return it, No problem, they will replace it with another one, but there the ryobi trimmers are expensive. You can get them really cheap over ebay, but if you get a bad one, tough luck for you.
Great comment - thoughtful
So did you break out the channel that the string goes through, get a defective one or did you buy an aftermarket one that was a horrible knock off? Is the Ryobi 40V HP string trimmer not at your local Home Depot yet? Just a suggestion - might not be a bad idea to review that one at some point down the road. I believe Ryobi is currently marketing it as their top of the line brushless string trimmer, along with all of their other HP OPE tools.
Thanks - they have so many different models - I'm working on one more trimmer review for the season and will include the HP model. Thanks again for your support
Thanks for the video. I think 3 hours to charge a battery with that VA isn't bad. Back in the day, batteries of all sorts took 12-14 hours to charge. Rapid charging makes batteries hotter and heat kills batteries. That's how the companies make you have to buy more batteries. I'd actually prefer a slower charger.
Yeah - but batteries have changed - look at your cell phone would a 12-14 charge work?
The battery charge is 3 hours with the charger included in the kit. Ryobi sells rapid chargers that are up to 4x faster. So, if a regular charger takes 3 hours to charge 4amp battery, then the rapid charger would charge it for about 45min.
Needless to say, that regular (standard) charger is better for the overall battery life.
This guy is a joke.
The angle of the handle is the right way so have no idea how you hold it different than everyone else
Right

This review is unfortunate and misleading. I almost avoided this trimmer because of this review, but after handling it i bought the 40v HP carbon fiber model today and it is very easy to load and does have a string guide in the head. Lots of power, bump feeds easily. Trigger is very light and smooth variability... I like this machine a lot.
It also came with a fast charger and feels very well built, light weight and balances like a regular gas trimmer. Honestly I love it. Seems like they addressed all the problems you had with it.
With 2 batteries I can essentially trim nonstop with it, as one battery charges in the same time the second one drains.
The HP model at least is not an epic fail. Far from it.
Glad it worked out for you
I admit the trimmer head could be better but it seems the head part in your video is missing a little cap that helps channel the string (3:05 min mark) its not as hard is it was shown in the video. It should channel through a lot easier. Unless this is an older model and they fixed it since then. It shouldnât be that hard.
I took mine apart, and there is a piece that goes in the center of that head which appears to have a channel down the center of it. You don't have to poke around very much to find the other side. Honestly, I saw the reload procedure on other channels for this weed eater, and that was one of the reasons I decided to get it. Strange to see someone so frustrated with it? If you are lacking that piece, which I don't see in the picture, I can see why you'd have an issue. Not only is it hard to line up, but there would also be a spring it the way.
That could explain it - can it fall out easily?
@@Kitearmy Seems like it clips in. I'm not readily able to take mine out. But yeah, if you don't have that, you're having to not only thread the line to the other side, but you also have to make it through the spring that is now in the way. You can see it in this guy's video: czcams.com/video/y8VmvX34eic/video.html
Ima 2 stoke kinda guy.
Great trimmer. Ive had no problem changing the heads.
Super easy bro.
Itâs actually my wifes trimmer for around her plants. .
Maybe you had too much coffee brother. Lol.
Good luck
No such thing as too much coffee
If you take the head off, it is easy to thread. Iâm not an engineer but it is easy to load the string. I had a Stihl strimmer which was a pain in the arse. This guy would make boiling water look difficult
you can boil water - woooow
I really wish I'd seen this review before I bought this pos. It was fine until I had to replace the string which, I agree with the reviewer, is almost impossible - EXTREMELY frustrating.
The reviewer should have shown us how to take the head apart to load the string. I'm still trying to figure that out.
My almost new trimmer might well wind up in the dump.
I tried to warn people - and all these Ryobi fans jumped all over me
I'm glad I went ego and on top of that I just found an ego chainsaw at home depot for $50! Ryobi can't beat thatđ
Even for $500 Ryobi can't beat it
Looks like operator error per usual. Most people donât have any of those issues because that trimmer is solid.
I don't know - I have tested over 50 trimmers - but I guess it could be
Werenât you supposed to put the spring when you attached the blades head?
nope - that is a different head
@@Kitearmy I saw another CZcams video were they put the spring that came with the regular head and it fits perfectly and keeps the blade head tight!
@@avellaneh Cool - I will have to look for that
I have the 2020 model, and its designed so much better than this one.. Ive been using it heavily for 3 years, and its been perfect, i have no plans to upgrade any time soon.
Smart man
I really liked this trimmer until... Mine came with a winder to make loading the string easy. But yesterday while trimming it just stopped and won't start again. $200 for about 1.5 years of use. Slightly better than the last gas powered trimmer which didn't last a season.
Trust me - Give EGO a try
He seems the type of engineer that complicates it for all mechanics to service or repair.
Is this the RY40270VNM? That should be .095" string.
Correct - the .080 Ryobi string is green, the .095 is orange.
Wish I wouldâve saw this before I bought it and opened it up. How about taping a wire to front tip of string to guide it thru, or enlarging the inner hole? An engineer should be able to come up with a fix. ( youâre not a choo choo train engineer are you?).
sanitation engineer :)
I've had this trimmer for a little over a year and just storing it on the ground has bent the shaft in multiple directions both at the attachment joint and above it at the handle. Always been used normally and never thrown around. Pretty disappointing for what was otherwise a decent trimmer.
Yep - its a Ryobi
My first comment either did not get posted or it was deleted. In it I stated to obvious straighten the line then try to feed it in. I have an earlier model with the same loading method. I straighten the line and I am able to feed it right in. I think you wanted a failure.
Sure - What I really wanted was a simple head to load.
literally the only video on CZcams that makes loading the string look difficult lol its almost like a parody. maybe you are a comedian instead of an engineer and you don't know if yet.
Hey Diana - thanks for the 2 comments - glad you loved the video
I've reloaded my string trimmer a couple of times now. I'm pretty sure it has taken me under 2 minutes, combined to reload it with 16 feet of .095 each time. Honestly it's a great buy in my opinion. Really, just buy the best model that's going to work for you, from the closest hardware store. It's the main reason I started using their products, is because I live near home depot. It's great equipment overall, they are trying to compete with E-go. They're pretty much there, with their products. I'd I'd still like to see a slightly more rigid build on their mowers, but Ryobi makes decent power equipment overall.
âI just make it look hardâ definitely lol
Yep - some people make tight rope walking look easy - doesn't mean it is for the average joe
@@Kitearmy well I brake stuff I try to fix 50% of the time but I think I might have an updated model, and the tool that doesnât clip on is a bad idea that every company needs to fix, already lost one!
@@nodescriptionavailable3842 Yep - good to know that you are operational - I still believe that other models, even Ryobi are better than this.
Hmmm 3 hours... Thats odd.. I have the same charger and it only takes an hour and a half or so (with testing time included) to charge a 5amp battery I have.
They have a few different speed chargers
@@Kitearmy idk the difference by sights alone.. but I know that charger is exactly identical to the one I got out the box to my chain saw
@@sevokevo Cool - how many Ah is the battery
@@Kitearmy I have a 5 and a 6 ah battery⊠the 6 ah is from my mower and the 5 is for the chainsaw
@@sevokevo You can see the charger at 1:02
He must be a civil engineer that's owned the same pair of boots for 10 years.
look as good as the day I bought them
Are you endorsed or paid by any outdoor power equipment companies or manufacturers? Or are you totally independent? This just seemed like an infomercial to me.
Thanks - glad you liked.
Getting the feed head off and on via the turn-lock mechanism is an absolute pain in the ass.
Amen brotha
Ryobi makes a better charger, but you need to buy it. They also make a really cool 1000w ac inverter
based on these comments, I'm guessing you don't have to be an engineer to figure out this trimmer. and that Ryobi figured if you're an engineer more than likely aren't doing your own lawn either lol love how every comment disagrees with this review. based on these comments I will be buying this Ryobi trimmer. great comments. strange video.
Everyone knows Ryobi is the best - yeah right
Sounds like somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed
Funny - this trimmer made me grumpy
The fixed line head with 4 points of quality .105 line is magic. I haven't reloaded it since last summer, but takes all of 6 seconds. The bump feed head is still new in box where they all belong for any brand. Maybe you should have let your husband try loading it. EGO doesn't even make a fixed line/bladed head muchless include one. Nor can any EGO use .105 commercial line. I own both Ryobi and EGO systems so I bought both the Ryobi and the rare attachment capable brushless EGO. Fixed shaft versions are a waste when you need multiple tools. Both were nice, but returned the EGO mainly due to not having the larger diameter fixed line head. Ryobi was also more powerful. The extra power isn't needed during string trimming (I use the low Ryobi setting), but absolutely nesessary with the fixed blade edger attachment. Blowers? That's my only EGO tool better or even equal to Ryobi.
