Watching this now in 2020, I am still filled with tremendous gratitude, respect and awe that we had him as our national leader during those difficult early years of our nation. We moved from third world to first world in ONE GENERATION, it has never been done before and till today, no other country has accomplished the same unbelievable feat.

I have been living in Sgp since the early 1990s. Very fond of the Singapore then, its true SouthEastAsian traditions and its people living it. I feel it has changed - there has been a lot of influx (for lack of better term) from China and India. Perhaps it is inevitable that such a small nation as Singapore was then - could not stay that way. So we got to live with it as best we can.
LKY has done a tremendous job for the country. I believe the majority agrees with that. Besides the pride that I understand many Singaporeans rightly feel for their country there should also be humility as to its future. The steps that this nation is going to take in the next 5 years will determine the next 50. Questions need to be asked and discussed openly. I feel Singapore again has an opportunity to be one of the leading nations for South East and Asia. Humility and self criticism are going to be crucial in its development.

So many good nuggets by LKY here. One of my faves is at 15:50: "the young must be
idealistic, the young must believe that the world should be more just, and there should be more moral rectitude in the behavior of their leaders, and they protest..." but "at the end of the day I think decisions have got to be made by adults not teenagers but it's got to be made in such a way that when the teenagers become adults and they look back on these decisions they would be proud of the generation that went before them." LKY comprehends the restless energies of the young (for he once was the same), does not belittle them and recognises the idealism as a rite of passage.

"Decisions have to be made by adults, not teenagers, but they've got to be made in such a way that when the teenagers become adults and they look back on these decisions, they will be proud of the generation that went before them."
This is such a phenomenal understanding of the juxtaposition of the idealism and drive of youth and the sensibility and wisdom of adulthood. At some point, the leaders in the US started answering only to the powerful and wealthy that paid their campaigns, ignoring the cries for positive change and leadership from the teenagers and young adults.... And as a member of that group (I was 13 when 9/11 happened), as an adult now I am incredibly ashamed and incensed at the decisions the generation before me have made.
We've been raised in a lukewarm bath our whole lives, preparing for a world that didnt exist, and when we came of age and finally stood up and opened the door to the rest of the house, we found it engulfed in flames. Now, as we struggle to recruit enough help to put out the fire, our so-called leaders are rushing to pack their own bags as full as they can before getting out. The younger generations may be at times ignorant and stubborn, but they arent dumb. They see what has been built for them and they are not happy... and rightfully so. This man had the wisdom to understand the purpose of the revolutionary zeal of youth. Sadly the same can not be said about the leadership in the US over the last 60 years.

In the prospect that Lee's party could garner the support of the ethnic minorities (which made up sizeable enclaves in some states), Tengku was left with two options. First, have him arrested or force Singapore out of the Federation. (legend goes that Robert Kuok was instrumental in saving Lee from the greater evil). In the end, Singapore was kicked out. A great statesman and visionary died last year, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew! As a 68 year old Dutchman I could only wish we in the EU-countries had one head of state of the intelligence, determination and vision of the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. This one "leader" would be able to change the whole EU and world peace for the better. Unfortunately I do not see this happen. However, in Europe there is one head of state, who could play that role(to my mind!). But few will agree, when I mention him. It is President Wladimir Putin of The Russian Federation. Many in the West consider him a dictator. They usually attack him with "cold war rhetoric" and think that present day Russia is still the former Soviet Union. This is a big mistake and Europe might pay a very huge prize for this. Especially in the light of the coming presidential elections in America!
When I was young the internet and CZcams did not exist. We relied on newspapers, radio and television for news. Every night we could watch The Vietnam War in our living rooms. In today's western neocolonial wars in The Middle East and elsewhere one rarely sees footage of the real war, like we did during The Vietnam War. I asked myself: was freedom of the press stronger in those days and/or are the present day journalists less courageous to report from the war zone? Then a few people read books or studied a particular science. University studies lasted twice as long as in our days. Much knowledge in one's field and general knowledge were necessary to acquire a high position in society. Nowadays in our rapidly and smaller becoming world and mass migrations, instant and the right information are needed.
Via the internet I got to know Mr. Lee Kuan Yew and many people from other countries and cultures. For me it has been an eyeopener and I started to realize how arrogant many western people are and how superior they feel in relation to other cultures. I watched and listened to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew in many interviews and lectures and as a result I got a great admiration for him and congratulate the Singaporean people with their founding father. Listening well to him and watching his body language is far more superior to any book about him. First of all one can not hear and see him in a book. But secondly, I do not need to worry about the ideological background of the author. So I consider a book on Mr. Lee Kuan Yew as extra information, but not the most important one. Furthermore, over the years I discovered, that the western press is not so "free" at all.
Conclusion: The main stream media will loose more and more their influence and people from all over the world will learn to think for themselves. This brings with it a tremendous responsibility and a learning process of selecting "useful" information from "useless" information. It will take time and will also require to think out the box. In addition, it will (hopefully) lead to the conclusion, that " a superior gender, superior races, superior cultures, superior nations, superior religions and superior ideologies" do not exist. All that is, that exists, is in a constant change and in a stage of development. The late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore, that tiny city state, is one of the people, whom I consider to be one of my teachers. I have never met him and I have never been in Singapore. This is one of the wonders of the internet. Like all tools, one can use it rightly or wrongly!

I see that i am not the only one who had his feet swept away and developped a rational and sincere admiration for the Late Prime Minister of Singapour Mister Lee Kuan Yew. It is interesting that i have reacted very similarly as you have and been doing the exact same things , namely trying to learn and absorb as much as possible from this giant of a great leader through the internet since i discovered him. So by this token there must be many well educated people going through this process. I was not born yet in the Vietnam war era (which ironicaly is called the American war in Vietnam ) but I dare to say i am well studied in history , especially East Asian and South East Asian history. I must say mister LKY seems to be a very important milestone in my life, watching and listening to him seems to have re-opened spaces about how one should lead one's life and how a honorable life should be conceived. I am not saying this lightly. His rationality and sincerity of thought is consistent through all his interviews over several eras. Listening to him made me realize my own conclusions that my own life have closed my views and this man is re-opening a very balanced and honest way of leading one's life that i could not imagine or rather that i had given up trying to live. I am going to continue to watch him and learn as i can feel he will be more than a leadership example for me, at this point i see him as a life mentor too. I wish you good luck learning more from him also.
