    At the 1986 National Day Rally, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew spoke about the social and cultural factors that have made Singapore successful economically. He made no apologies of micromanaging Singaporeans' lives and way of living - from the languages used, to the neighbours they live with. Watch an excerpt from his speech on Aug 17, 1986.
    Watch the full documentary special Lee Kuan Yew: In His Own Words on Sep 15, 9pm on CNA's CZcams channel.

    In western culture, the last statement is ALWAYS omitted, "you pay the price". Paying the price meant the responsibilities and consequences of your choice

    • @keiththomas1180
      @keiththomas1180 Před 5 měsíci +21

      I think they omitte that because Westerners already know that, it's common knowledge and politicians over there know that. In Asia, politicians treat voters like children and place fear in their hearts so that the public will comply with whatever they want to do

      It was obvious to all for a long time. Then came the traitors and ideological subversion. What we have now in the west is not indigenous but alien. An ideological poison imposed on us by a hostile force.
      Yes. You may call this conspiracy theory. I however would not promote this to the status of theory yet. It is just a plausible hypothesis before all evidence is organized and chronology of events is discovered and documented.

    One of the greatest policies Lee kuan Yew introduced was zero tolerance towards narcotics. You crack down on narcotics like nobody's business, you keep half of the societal problems including organized drug crimes away.

    • @jonathanmatthew1263

      1. The prohibition of narcotics is only possible because it's a very small island. 2. organized drug cartels launder their money in Singapore so.... They aren't actually keeping out organized criminals.

    • @jonathanchia9167
      @jonathanchia9167 Před měsícem

      launder money in singapore is different from selling drugs in singapore. Its so difficult to keep money launderers out due to the many tactical ways to get money into singapore banks. Also due to the stability of the economic, criminals see properties as a way to wash money. No government can stop them unless a trail of money is present. Thats the reason compliance officers are in high demand in singapore banks/institutes. @@jonathanmatthew1263

    The man had a vision for a better Singapore one that could become what it is today and he was not dissuaded from that path - good for him because look what this has achieved.
    If only we had more people like this in public office around the world today, people who actually have the best intentions for their country and it's people, he took the responsibility for the vision and the ways to make that vision a reality, that plan to enhance and enrich the lives of the people he was there to SERVE - he was not there for his own gain, greed, personal agenda, status or power, he was there to serve his country and his people with integrity and honour and he did.

    "But we either believe in democracy or we don't. If we do, then, we must say categorically, without qualification, that no restraint from the any democratic processes, other than by the ordinary law of the land, should be allowed... If you believe in democracy, you must believe in it unconditionally. If you believe that men should be free, then, they should have the right of free association, of free speech, of free publication. Then, no law should permit those democratic processes to be set at nought, and no excuse, whether of security, should allow a government to be deterred from doing what it knows to be right, and what it must know to be right..."
    As an Indonesian whose country has labored under the same kinds of arguments that Lee would famously use later in life, I often wonder what happened to this 31-year-old from Singapore, only five days into Leadership of the Opposition, in whom the flames of idealism burned. Perhaps if UMNO had not brutalized him and brutalized Singapore the way it did, perhaps if Malaysia had been a kinder Malaysia in those fateful years, he would not be so despairingly cynical and so devoid of hope, and perhaps he would not chase a great Singapore at the expense of a good Singapore as single-mindedly as he did.

    Some people thinks that LKY is somewhat like a dictator,maybe yes, maybe no. Dictatorship may have a negative connotation but if the leader who's doing such type of government is like LKY who wants nothing but the best for Singapore as a whole, I'd rather have him as a leader than kiss-a$$ leaders who are just concern about their position or people who are close to them. I've been to Singapore so many times and from their airport you can tell how progressive they are. I can't help but feel envious because my country may never achieve even 20% of Singapore's success. Corruption, lack of discipline, lack of social responsibility, are just some of the problems that hinders our economic growth. RIP LKY. Well done! 🥳

  • @sunway1374
    @sunway1374 Před 8 dny

    Undeniably the economic success of Singapore is there to see. But to what costs?
    We could not do a social experiment. But maybe Singapore could have been a slightly poorer, but freer, less stressful, more equal, less materialistic, less crowded, and happier country to live in for Singaporeans, if Lee Kuan Yew had been more relaxed.
    He was paranoic about survival and success for Singapore. Singapore's culture and community today is a re-invention of Lee. Lee had molded Singapore following his own personal visions.
    Diversity and tradition can be good. Individualism can be good. Educate the people to better themselves and to contribute to future generations out of their own conviction and passion. Not force and discipline them. Not with stick and carrot.
    The country should belong to the people, not to one man. Singapore's success will continue, the country will survive. But there are fewer and fewer Singaporeans around to see it.
