2023 is going to go down as an “all time great” year. There was something for everyone.
It is a great year but it isn't 1998 tier.

I think 2007 and 2017 still edge it out, but it was a fantastic year.
Cyberpunk 2.0 and Phantom Liberty is by far the greatest thing I have played this year.
The best thing about this channel is there is absolutely NO rage baiting about Starfield and Diablo IV, and they are treated fairly rather than used for dopamine clicks for the outrage addicts.

My personal favorite this year: The Talos Principle 2.
A puzzle game with the best use of philosophical themes in a game since Disco Elysium. Great story, great really clever but never unfair puzzles.
Shocked to see how much you loved Octopath 2. I had no idea it was THAT good in any aspect considering how strong of a year this was for gaming.
His review actually had me order it. 29.99 on Amazon ps5
This list really made me realize on how much I rely on your impressions & reviews to make my purchase decisions. Didn't fail me once and unlikely to ever do, because you talk about everything, good and bad, leaving me with the facts to make a decision instead of taking that decision away from me like a lot of other reviewers seem to do.

Its crazy you've 100%ed more games this year than there are weeks in a year. Massive props to you man, ur definitely one of the most dedicated reviewers i've seen.
I was surprised, that Mortim managed to pull this off including more than 500 hours in BG3 and churning out multiple quality videos about this wonderful gem during the same year. True dedication.

Very happy to see Octopath up almost at the top. Baldurs Gate 3, OT2 and Cyberpunk 2.0 are probably 3 of my favorite games in the last decade.

I'm getting ready to battle the steampunk fire elemental guarding Grymforge for the fourth time, my first time on tactician. I can't wait to see the amended ending sequence! Months from now I'll venture into the honor mode.
BG3, Octopath 2, and Lies of P were my three favorite games of the year (in that order), so it's nice to see all three high on your list!

This is a great list. Taking out some of the older games and all of the various Soulslikes (I just always bounce off of these) this just about mirrors. My list of favorite games I played this year. A couple of these are still in my backlog, but I can’t imagine them being far off from where you put them. I’m so glad I found your channel this year. We have very similar taste in games and I trust your reviews more than any other source on the Internet. Happy holidays!

I just want to give Mortym a shoutout: I never would have found or played "Colony Ship" if not for his review and mentions in his videos. What a gem! I had such a blast with that game that I put down everything else and powered through that game for its story! I feel like it's really rare to play a game where you really feel every point you put into every skill, and every gear upgrade feels like a massive win! Fun story, great characters, cool premise... it combined a lot of elements from "Pandorum", "Fallout", and more, but ends up it's own thing. Total blast that put a smile on my face from start to finish, and I never would have found it except for this channel. Thanks Mortym!

Every time I find your videos very informative and engaging. You know what you are talking about after 100% and manage to summarize the key points in your videos with well written reviews and structure. In your channel I discover games, which I would have dismissed just seeing the ad/teaser (e.g. on Steam). Also sometimes find out about a game, which I thought was great fun, is maybe good overall but gameplay wise probably not my cup of tea. I need to select more carefully with my backlog as I have more quality games, than I have time to sink my teeth into them. Anyway to me your channel is infotainment at it's best in the gaming world.

I appreciate that not only did it make your list, but Octopath Traveler also ranked 2nd for the year. It is criminally underrated this year, with an excellent take on Turn-based combat, good growth and added features from the first title, and excellent music by Yasunori Nishiki. The music also being underappreciated as it wasn't even nominated in the game awards.
I have a game recommendation, since this year you reached out to a lot of older RPGs, especially aRPGs and Souls-like games, but Final Fantasy: Stranger of Paradise launched on Steam this year. It includes all of the DLC from it's beta year in Epic. It was made by the team that makes the Nioh games, Team Ninja, and it has a Final Fantasy theme that was built on by utilizing a Job system. The story for the first half isn't anything to write home about, but the combat and and job system is what kept my friend and I going throughout the game.

For all your end of year videos that I've watched thus far, this one's my favorite. Great bite sized looks at everything you touched this year to give me a good sense on where games stand. Makes me want to give one of those Piranha Bytes games a try!
Only thing I disagree with though is Chained Echoes. I *really* hated that combat bar mechanic, and the way you level up just made me miss a more traditional xp system (I know it was on abilities, but still).
Omg rogue trader got top 3 and Ocotpath got second place. Two great purchases I made thanks to you Mort my man. Thanks for everything you do!…but I can’t wait for the full review of rogue trader!

I like how you're willing to talk about a game's positive qualities along with the bad. Most people seem to talk about games in one extreme or the other. It's very fair and makes you quite rational. Earned a follow.

I pretty much have no performance issues on Jedi Survivor. I think its a mixed bag as to whether people are having performance issues or if they are running it perfectly fine

As someone who grew up with pen and paper games and recalls buying the Forgotten Realms boxes set when it first came out, it’s bizarre to see a table top RPG in any form, video game or otherwise, be so popular. That’s cool. What’s also bizarre is I nearly bounced off this game and feel like warm towards it. It was good.

Honestly, great rankings, i have played most all of these and would rank them quite similarly. Except Hades, only placement that shocked me. The first thought that comes to your mind when you read this would be correct, which would likely prove my shock, lol

Finally, someone who loved Bioshock 2 as much as I did. The multiplayer mode, which doesn’t exist anymore, was super fun as well.

Company woulda gone under or suffered severe layoffs. Delays are a big deal budget wise
They delayed like 3 or 4 times.

@@moosiemoose1337 They delayed from early 2020 to late 2020. And they knew the state of the game and figured that was about how late they could reasonably afford to delay. Delaying for another three years is an order of magnitude more consequential and severe.
Cyberpunk 2077 was in "Early access" from 2020 till 2023 xd
Dishonored 1 is so amazing, I have fond memories of doing a blink only no kills no detection run. Very well designed game.
I'm jealous he now gets to experience Dishonored 2 for the first time. Probably the best level design in any game ever.

Me too. I finished Dishonored 2 for the first time this year, and then few times more, and it is my second favorite game after original Deus Ex.
I don’t usually go in for stealth games, but I definitely enjoyed Dishonored! My only issue was after doing a Ghost run first, I lost my excitement for the game. Doing a run where I killed everything that moved, while ending up with a worse outcome, really didn’t appeal after that! I’ll never forget the challenge and the sense of accomplishment I felt after that first run, though!

Thank you for giving Starfield its flowers - it was personally my GOTY; and while not revolutionary in the way I was hoping for it to be, I thought it was easily BGS’s best narrative/faction/role playing experience to date.

This game was amazing for RPGs, and abysmal for strategy games, especially with Mimimi games closing down. Really hope that changes in 2024, because this genre is so special to me.
