Your channel has been such a breath of fresh air- no clickbait, no stupid “broadcaster voice”, no snarky hot takes; just earnest and well thought out opinions. Truly appreciate everything that you’re doing with the channel!
word
well said
Whoa, Underrail at #7 and above all legendary RPGs of 90s/2000s. I'm flattered.
Fallout 1 and 2 have been my favorite games since I was 11 and I thought no game would ever come out that I liked better but you pulled it off. Can't wait for infusion.
I was so surprised too. I am such a huge metro fan, I was always dancing around the idea, of getting Underrail. But now!
great game I'd put it way up there too, you did a great job🙏
This channel is the absolute standard for RPG/CRPG info, reviews, and discussion. In my opinion, no other channel comes close. Thank You for all the hard work and excellent content!
13:36 Thank you for mentioning us! You should definitely check the latest version of the game. We've made a lot of changes since the pre-release version based on all the feedback we've received.
Kudos to Wasteland 2 for being so good at introducing the lore and plot of Wasteland 1 to new players. You can ask survivors of the first game (both allies and enemies) what happened in the first game and their thoughts about it, getting multiple points of view. Few RPGs nailed that aspect without bloating the game with unnecessary walls of text, WL2 did it so well with few lines of dialogues.
Most RPGs will have this info break the pace of the story, but Wasteland 2 has some quests that are directly related to conflicts that were caused by the actions of the first game's protagonists, so you both get a general idea of what happened AND new content that stands on its own.
In regards of Shadowrun Returns: Some guys took the main campaign, ported it to Shadowrun HongKong and added a ton of features like Companion Quests and the likes which makes the original Dead Man's Switch kinda obsolete.
Glad to see PS: T and Disco Elysium included in the list. My favorites, regardless of the flaws, just such great storytelling and world building.
Disco Elysium ranks really high for me, too. I have only one playthrough of it, but it was one of my better gaming experiences. That surprised me, because I usually play much more action oriented games like Dark Souls.
It would be absolute insanity to not have either Planescape or Disco Elysium in the top 55(!) CRPGs.
no clickbaity tierlist that devolves a complex opinion into a single categorization? tsk tsk tsk
Are you knew? Just simply asking bc mortem has outstanding content. The way he breaks down mechanics, etc is 1st class imho

in a sea of gaming review channels yours has always stood out, that's hard to do. great fair takes on games, detailed but concise, doesn't waste my time. even if i'm not interested in the games i'm interested in your takes. awesome work keep going!
I love this kind of video, Mortym, rankings! And your rankings are very entertaining and informative.
Love the list, Mortym. Happy to have seen many of these come out over the years. While I agree that WoTR is probably my favorite, there's simply so many games and worlds that deserve all the praise in the world for what they do. I'm very excited to see the list grow as we go forward!
Lets add Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption to this list for the next update ;)
really like that game, especially medieval part
After the last battle in medieval period I promissed myself I quit the moment I hear "Where is Anezka?!" again. Sadly it didn't take long...
I've soldered thought the 2nd half and still had some fun there and here.
I still can wonder how people reacted to VtM Bloodlines announcement when they said it will be in modern times.... when in Redemption modern times were the weakest. That on top of bugs and release around HL2 surely helped dig the game deeper into obscurity.
Loved redemption i am glad someone in the comments section gave it a mention it has one really good story.
holy shit I was literally just watching your previous ranking video on the toilet 30 minutes ago, how fortuitous!
Holy shit and I'm in the shitter now! 😮
I'm good atm. I did pee for 2 minutes straight though.
I’m about to drop the kids off at the pool 🏊♂️
baader-meinhoff phenomenon. Do look it out.
If you just watched a 30 minute video on the toilet and need to now watch a 45 minute one, you've probley got a problem. 😎💩
I watched this from beginning to end. Great video as always!
best video i have ever watched entirely on 3000x speed
How do I get that speed
Excellent video that not only serves as a great ranking to guide newcomers through the many CRPGS available, but also help veterans like me discover titles that went under the radar :) Awesome work man.
I’m just starting to watch this video but I wanted to say thanks for making it. As someone that has played a lot fewer CRPGs than JRPGs, I really appreciate the context you provide going through a lot of them. :)
Thank you so much for mentioning fan patches and mods for the older titles. Keep that up please and maybe expand on that aspect in your next overview video. I hate to search for hours what I need to install to get older titles too work just to get the usual discussions of "you really need that patch" vs "it runs fine for me without any patch".
This was a wonderful stroll down memory lane! Really enjoyed it, thanks!
Pretty list, everytime I watch this type of videos it makes me want to buy and play a new RPG 😅. Can't agree more on Tyranny needing a sequel, it has so much potential (I hope someone from Obsidian sees this 😛)
Unfortunately they don't own the IP, it's Paradox's IP. They were pretty public about not wanting to do a sequel and Obsidian is now owned by Microsoft, so overall, chances are near 0. :/
Until MS buys Paradox 😂
And here I thought I have played most of the crpgs. More than half of those i haven't played. Wish I had a bit more time.
I love that you gave Tyranny a high ranking above some of the heavy weights in the genre. Probably my favorite crpg.
Personally many of these I don’t consider crpgs. Gothic, elex, risen, greedfall are closer to Skyrim and Witcher than to bg3 and pathfinder imo. Kotor and dragon age are kinda in between while inquisition leaves most of the crpg elements of origin behind. For the same reason I wouldn’t put fallout 3/NV on this list.
@n71 Everyone has a different idea of what "CRPG" means, which is why I don't even bother using the term anymore. Back in the day it just meant any RPG on a computer. Now it means, what... a computer based isometric RPG? A computer RPG that uses some vague definition of a "classic" rule set? A computer RPG that is party based? Who knows.
Tyranny was a gem of a game, certainly had its issues but I sure did love it really loved the approach to evil in it xD
Love your videos and passion for the genre!
Great video. Some of these I haven't played yet and I'll have to check them out.
A new list i can use as reference👌. Seen the last ones more than a few times when choosing between what game to play next or pick up.
Oh boy oh boy you've made my already long backlog tremendously longer!
I'm currently playing through Tyranny (absolutely loving it!)
There is a Temple of Elemental Evil implemented for Solasta that I found very fun.
A nice recap of the review list!
Great video as always, thanks for all the recommendations.
Dang, the ranking just shocked me at times. Despite the difference in taste we have (and quite a difference that is), I really enjoyed the video. Thanks 😊
wow youve been killing it with great vods
I respect and value your reviews a ton and you keep talking about these Pathfinder games that I've actually cracked the seal on Kingmaker and am really enjoying it so far! I don't want to spoil myself by playing Wrath of the Righteous first, so after my KM run I do plan on jumping into WotR. You speak highly of Rogue Trader as well, so maybe a big Owlcat push is in my future.
Update: Stag Lord down. :)
I'm curious next to see if the Kingdom Management gripes warranted or not. I think that's coming soon.
I’m playing through Kingmaker right now and I’m so overwhelmed lol I just got to level 6 and I already want to restart because my characters are a janky mess. I’m a min max type player so it’s triggering me. The character customization is so deep and important that I want to just start over and make my party the right way without investing so much to make new guys or respec
@Childofbhaal I feel you 100%. I no lie restarted this game more than any other CRPG.
First attempt - I started with the default human Warrior with a shield and flail/Mace (forget his name).
2nd - Tried to custom a Druid. Hard fail trying to min-max and most likely in the boat you are in now.
3rd - Tried to min-max a Ranger. Another hard fail.
4th - Just went back to an Origin/Default character, this time Melaku (Paladin dude) and he has been a perfect fit. Paladin's are literally God tier and it just makes the game fun to play and less stressful. The game is hard enough without self-inflicted pain your first play through.
For reference, just hit level 5 and doing my thing managing my Kingdom.
Which by the way! Is not as bad as people make it out to be. So far I am actually enjoying it. The game is called KINGMAKER after all folks. Not Dungeon Crawler :).
Hopefully Rogue Trader will be fixed by the time you get to it, great game but riddled with bugs, some even gamebreaking.
@@elwinkline6387 That’s awesome I’m definitely going to include a Paladin in my next game 😂 right now my main character is a Slayer focused on archery and sneak attacks I’m gonna stick with that as my main. It’s a lot of fun and mechanic stacking to get amazing damage
It's incredible you find a CZcamsr who has very similar taste to you. I played so many games thanks to you, and they were awesome. Apart from Pathfinder. I put 80 hours into it but it was way too convoluted for my tastes (as you mentioned about it's barrier of entry). Besides that one, my top 5 are identical to yours, lol.
Fantastic video and content! Will try to share the video with some other CRPG fans!
Hey Mort, I absolutely love your content! Been binging it like mad hahah, I just added wastelands 3 to my wishlist thank you for the in-depth review on that game 3 years ago, can't wait for it go on sale this March for the spring sale
It's nice to see Tyranny getting some love - that is one of my favorite modern cRPGs. This together with Divinity Original Sin 1 (not 2, at least not yet), Rogue Trader and Baldur's Gate 3. Although, Rogue Trader deserves a special spot - I'm not good with complicated mechanics whatsoever and failed repeatedly at Pathfinder: Kingmaker, yet Rogue Trader clicked for me like nothing else. Also the 40k lore in this was such an immense treat, the writing was outstanding and the combat was absolutely fantastic in providing me with an appropriate 40k power trip. Baldur's Gate 3 is obviously superior in many things - however Rogue Trader clicked a little more with me and I finished it in almost one go while I'm still struggling a little bit with getting fully immersed into BG3.
Larian quickly becoming legendary, aren’t they?
Love your content mang ❤
Wow, great content bro. Keep it up.
SOLID video!! Great work sir!
Great list! Also interesting what do you think.of such rpgs as might and magic or wizardry?
I really enjoyed your video and the list . I really respect your knowledge behind all these games and the effort you put to inform us. Personally I don’t care about the 100% completion status but that you really enjoy playing this genre . keep up the great work
Gothic is the game of my childhood i am so glad it got a shout out
Great list.
Personally played and liked 48 of those games and 4 I'm definitely planning to play someday. Rogue Trader for example, just waiting for patches.
Good selection. I have so many of these in my library yet to be played.
Great video! PoE 1 over so many other games stuck out to me, but I see you’re a big fan of the series.
i mentioned arcanum in owlcat's survey, we need to make this a thing. mention it everywhere
Good list, adding a few of these to my need to play.
Awesome list! Your reviews made me discover some great games I wouldn't have played otherwise (Pathfinder and Tyranny) , so I'll probably check out the rest in the top 10. I am curious where would you put the other 2 dragon ages, as you said Origins is not your favourite (it's the only one I've played but have inquisition for whenever I have the time)?
I wouldnt consider the other 2 crpgs honestly, but I liked Inquisition the most
If you're including Vampire bloodlines the masquerade then you have to include Deus Ex too.
Appreciate the difference between a ranking and a favourite at the end
Great list! So many games to check out!
This is the ultimate CRPG choice video, thank you man ^^ !!!
EVIL ISLANDS is definitely a game i would like to be reviewed on this channel.
Love your content man!
Thank you very much for the amazing content as ever! :)
Will you review Expedition Vikings any time soon?
Not soon, but eventually
The main reason Planescape Torment would be higher in my personal list, is because of the unique impact of companions. Every single one of them can teach you new things, that do not exist elsewhere. For example Ignus can teach you spells that are outside of the spellbook of the ruleset. That is to say both of you are the only entities in the game's universe that know these spells... I have never seen cRPG doing that besides Torment. Not only that, but he has a unique way of teaching them to you, by sacrificing att points... Not just the story, but also companion's story is just top notch. Also, once you realize that the nameless one was Ignus's teacher in his previous incarnations, before Ignus gets banished to the plane of fire, makes this come full-circle in a very unique way IMHO.
Skyrim allows you to sculpt your own versions of spells, which is cool. BG3 also has some unique spells to be found late in the game.
@@Swizz12 None of those things are what I talk about. But just for the record, can you remind me which are the unique spells in bg3? I can't remember any
I’ve always felt that the game doesn’t feel like a game. I’d rather just read a far more complex book. Planescape: Torment seems like a favorite for people that should read more novels.
@Swizz12 Skyrim...Doesn't do that in fact it's the first Elder Scrolls game since Arena that doesn't have spellcrafting
@@zyfrythThe Dethrone Spell which I think only Gale? Can learn, there's another spell but I forget it. You get the unique spells in the Wizard Vault
great list. would put Origins higher. thanks for the shout out about Avernum series. Avernum Crystal Souls is probably 30 years old now and that story has stayed with me a long time. way ahead of its time, great lore, great plot twist. a crpg classic
I think it's great how positive you approach the matter. There are so many good games. Among other things, I'm finally on my first run of Pathfinder:wotr and Bloodlines. Wotr had to wait until I finished a few other games so I could take a lot of time with it :D
I would also like to see a sequel to Tyranny, but I have a hard time imagining where a direct sequel could start, as that would require a "definitive" ending to the first part. hmm BG1 has a very unique voice acting in the German edition, full of dialects and a presentation that stands between irony, seriousness and laughable. but it's so great and I can't imagine it any other way ❤️
It doesn't exactly fit the topic, but I would still like to recommend "The Inquisitor" to you. It only takes 8 to 9 hours maybe you can take a look, even if only for yourself. It has a great story, atmosphere,... I had to play through it 4 times :D
Mort, every time you upload one of these I think "you've done this one" and then you drop some knowledge on me like "last time I did this was 2020."
Time flies man. Feel like I remember the last list clear as day, it's the reason I played Tyranny.
great list. so many games I need to try and more I need to replay.
Great overview as usual. I myself have played 34 of the games on the list (not all to completion and certainly not 100%). I bounced off of UnderRail early because of the unexpected difficulty, but I need to give it a shot again as that was a while ago (2016 or so). and I am a more persistent player these days. My earliest games in the genre were BG, Fallout, Divine Divinity and Plane Scape Torment. It has been a while but it feels like these game came out all at once and I loved them all and the genre ever since.
#1 great list. I really enjoy crpgs and had not even heard of some of these.
#2: new arc line has some serious potential. First spritual successor to arcanum I have seen.
#3: would love to see a colab between you and Slandered Gaming. My other go to for CRPGs
Amazing. This is why I subbed to you
Hi Mortismal, I've played most of the games on this list and I have a game for you. I highly recommend you play Steve Jackson's Sorcery! 1-4 ( its a 4 part game ) , it is one of the best RPG experiences you'll ever have. The writing is some of the best in gaming.
Fantastic list! There are some decisions that are surprising to me, like placing Jade Empire and NWN over New Vegas, or Disco Elysium being as low on the list as it is, but that's the nature of subjective analysis! all in all I think this shaped up to be well thought out and fair, i really enjoyed listening through it and went on to check out some other reviews as a result. Great job Mortismal!
Amazing ranking. Agree on all except the top 2 which I would personally swap 🤣. Though I did love my BG3 playthrough and was an amazing experience, I struggle to run it 4-5 more times (which I haven't with Pathfinder or Divinity). You definitely have the best (C)RPG channel out there. Kudos to your great work
I dont comment much. Im relatively new to your channel and crpgs. Im deep in Wrath and Dos2. Thx for a quality channel.
im really curious what you think of the old elder scrolls games! love your stuff bruv
I'd love if you'd do a tier list for the CRPG's you've done.
Might be fun.
Great list! I will say I think Greed Fall is amazing, Spiders truly captured some of that BioWare magic and I’m excited for the sequels. Kotor also easily in my top 10 games ever. Wasteland 3 I think probably makes top 5 if not top 3 crpgs for me, full voice acting goes a long way.
Reviewing 55 CRPGs is insane, absolute gamer god
Hi! Congratulations for this video, I liked it very much. I think Nox would have a place on this list too, if you haven't played it already I highly recommend it.
Hell yeah, 45min. Thanks mort!
Best rpg review channel
Great list, and loved the video. Surprised to see games like Greedfall, Elex, etc, but no Witcher games.
The Aielund Saga campaign for neverwinter nights 1 was amazing. Classic dnd sprawling adventure and so well made. Thoroughly recommend.
There are much better modules than Aielund Saga
Great video - thanks!!
Great list to pick from, thx!
Jagged Alliance 3 is not in the list. An oversight?
I thought about it a lot honestly and decided it was more trpg than crpg in the end but it was pretty close. I could see it going either way for people.
Another great video Mort
Just started watching this video! Gee, I do wonder which one Mortismal will choose as the best crpg he has reviewed. A thrilling mystery, that one is!
Bg3 took 95 hours over 3 months to finish my first playthrough and it was exhausting
Ive spent 95 hours in WotR these past two week and I cannot get enough (just liberated Drezen)
Daammmmm and I thought I was a moron for taking 140h to finish my first playthrough😅
morons unite! I also got something around 150h first playthrough@@ThePiotrekpecet
I feel Like owlcat did a great Job in Terms of scale. Never played a crpg that felt as Epic as wotr
Damn, I'm 143 hrs my first, trying to finish sidequests but can't continue some
Awesome list. Definitely what to check out Shadowrun (I love cyberpunk settings) after it's recent updates. Pillars maybe. I'll give Divinity 2 another whirl since I liked BG3 so much
Divine Divinity is so underrated I think, very fun game.
Dragon Age Origins, when it released, was incredible. It may not have aged as gracefully but in and for its time, it was amazing. Thats where the nostalgic love for it lies.
Indeed. Origins should be rated much hlgher. It is a seminal work and along with badlurs gate 2, it is biowares best work.
The mod scene has reinvigorated a lot of these older games and that is especially true for DAO.
So good to see Underrail get the place it deserves on your list. I'm looking forward for the dev next game.
what a great list! You've just added a bunch of games to my to be played list!
side note, but didn't temple of elemental evil come out after arcanum? I thought I heard you say that it's the first of troika, unless you meant first to hit the list.
First on the list is what I meant, but I can see how that was confusing
I’m not the only person on the planet that has played Geneforge? Neat!
DOSII is also one of my favorite games! I’ve put so many hours in - I LOVE the combat system. I love the story and the characters. As much as I’m loving BG3, I can’t wait to see DOSIII from Larian. I’m already writing sequels to DOSII in my head.
I bought WOTR after looking at your videos. Still afraid to start because of the mechanics. But each videos where you praise it give me more strength to finally do so haha
One day!
brother, just go for it. even on really low dificulties it poses quite the challenge, so dont be afraid to go on "easy" mode, the game trully is a fantastic narrative masterpiece
go for it. the companion pre-builds are decent enough to go through the easier difficulties without issue. once you are more educated about the systems etc you can play higher difficulties for the next playthroughs if you choose to do several.
@@Merumya which he would likelly do since the game changes a LOT given your mythic path of choice
Yes go for it. You can finish the game at first try without respecing and enjoy everything. Mistakes are allowed on normal difficulty. I think the main of my 3rd playthrough would one shot the whole team of my first one 😂
I love that you do this! Side qq, did triangle strategy or Ogre battle remaster not make the cut?
They are both trpgs, might make a separate video for that at some point
@@MortismalGaming ooooh. I see. New to it all. Thanks man! Look forward to it if you decide to.
16:53 Geneforge! I played the original when I was a kid and replayed it a few times in the modern era. Good game.
Cool list Mortismal! Nostalgia for me has Fallouts up higher and AoD too! That said, I did notice a few strange absences from the list that I wonder if you have gone back to try? I would love to see your take on Deus Ex (1st one) and maybe Human Revolution as well. Not sure you would count them as crpgs but you do have VTM on there which isnt too far off from Deus Ex. Also would highly recommend Expeditions: Conquistador and to a lesser extent, Expeditions: Viking.
The rankings were for CRPGs - party based tactical RPGS, both of those Deus Exs are better categorized as immersive sims with rpg elements.
Great list - I think I must have missed 8 of these. Ranking wise also almost everything makes sense plus I wouldn't be able to rank all the CRPGs like this since I was continually being reminded of some I had forgotten, like Bloodlines which is a great VtM game.
Great list!
Hopefully by the time you do your next list, Broken Roads will be available to play and review 🙂
Okay this video deserves couch + tv and popcorn. Hold on, Mort, getting comfy and watching!
Great video, alot of games in here i never played. Interesting.
Great stuff. I’ve played almost all of them… but no where near 100%, lol. I’m currently playing POE 1 (again) and Amberland for the first time…which is sort of a modern Might and Magic… it’s worth a play I think. Last year I played more of the tactics games than I had planned… Tactics Ogre, Triangle Strategy and Fire Emblems. Picked up Octapath 2 for sometime this year…
I am really surprised how high you put Phiranna bytes games, especially Gothic and Elex. I have seen your reviews for these games, and I know you enjoyed them, but I didin't know you liked them that much. As a simple Eastern European, it does warm my heart :D
Hi Mortem! Where do you put Sovereign Syndicate on this list?
Damm, i just missed the order of the top three, anyways very nice work my man
I tought would be
1 wotr
2 bg3
3 dos 2
