How to draw a portrait with a ballpoint pen as a part of learning how to draw the head, facial features, people, and the figure. This is a drawing of Art Blakey, late jazz musician.
In this tutorial I show you how to draw a portrait using a regular, simple, cheap, actually FREE ole TD Bank ballpoint (ball-point or ball point) pen. I'll use the same pen and ink techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, scribbling and even stippling in some areas.
The unique advantage of the ball point pen is that you can make lines of a wide variety in value and weight which is perfect for capturing subtle value changes when modeling even the most complex forms or for sketching things out before you get serious with your drawing. Its fun!

Mr. Dunn, Saw your comment about hoping to teach art full time. If you ever do it in NYC, I'll sign up in a minute. These videos are excellent and your explanations are clear and easy to understand. I've been doing pen and ink since I was a kid, but feel more frustrated than happy with my results and would love to "fix" that. Till then, I'll keep watching these great videos. Thanks for doing them.

Like seriously, you broke that down to its lowest common denominator and built it back up again! This is one of the best videos by far regarding light and value. I am a novice with minimal talent and no art school so I am piecing this thing together by watching videos on youtube (cause this stuff is expensive) and this was incredibly helpful and helps my understand why every time I am just doodling and drawing heads I always end up using 3/4 pose. You rock!

I've loved anything art all my life but never really progressed...it just doesn't sink in! I've now reached 56yrs old and started again and through watching your videos have made the biggest progress in all of my many attempts.
Now you sir, are by far the most kindest, and patient teacher this world has to offer. As these videos are rather dated I can only pray that your absence is due to you progressing to be a full on professional teacher?
I would still like your opinion even though I feel you will not be able to answer because of the above reasons.
Would you say that it is possible that someone can have the passion but no matter how much practice will never be able to grasp the concept of drawing a face which is nothing other than a child of primary school(that's what we call it here in the UK, and think it's first grade in USA?)
Forgive me of my wandering on but I trust you as a man who's skill and knowledge is second to none.
May God bless you Mr Dunn and a huge thank you for all you do
