How to draw a portrait with a ballpoint pen as a part of learning how to draw the head, facial features, people, and the figure. This is a drawing of Art Blakey, late jazz musician.
In this tutorial I show you how to draw a portrait using a regular, simple, cheap, actually FREE ole TD Bank ballpoint (ball-point or ball point) pen. I'll use the same pen and ink techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, scribbling and even stippling in some areas.
The unique advantage of the ball point pen is that you can make lines of a wide variety in value and weight which is perfect for capturing subtle value changes when modeling even the most complex forms or for sketching things out before you get serious with your drawing. Its fun!
Music: "Play Song" By John Deley & the 41 Players
I'm 73 years old never drew or painted anything except my apartment walls.I do some photography but I want to paint and I thought drawing has to be the first step if you want to be a painter.
I'm searching the internet for "drawing for beginners"came upon many. BUT no one explains how do go about Drawing like you.Thank you so much
He's pretty damn good alright
Robert Santorelli And here I thought it was too late to start learning drawing at 18. It's never late to learn anything amrighht!
I SAY, look up proko, he's the master, and also ModernDayJames, they are some of the best
Robert Santorelli my father the painter once told me you have to be able to draw before you can paint
I’m pencil drawer and I don’t know how to paint good paint is a whole lot of learning again it’s like you never knew how to be good art
I am studying Fine Arts in Athens and I just finished my 3d year. I have never, never experienced such an amazing lecture about volume and qualities. Thanks very much for sharing!
You're very welcome : )
Your kids must love story time. Your voice is so mellow and soothing. You should start a new channel. "Story time with Alphonso" you could just read and help us all get a good nights sleep! Ha ha.
Bartholo Clumpdink Haha good one
Bartholo Clumpdink Can you believe that I often put his videos and they make me fall asleep when it's nap time ? hahah ! ^^ I just enjoy his voice so much ! And then when I wake up I watch the video again and learn how to draw xD
:-)
Bartholo Clumpdink I agree. Children's book in the works?
Bartholo Clumpdink I know right
You are very good at teaching thanks
Thank you :-)

For my entire life, I've never seen anything as it was, until now. Wow! Thank you. This was deep!
thanks so much
Alphonso Dunn... u r my idol..love u
how can I show u my pen works inspired by u??
Mr. Dunn, Saw your comment about hoping to teach art full time. If you ever do it in NYC, I'll sign up in a minute. These videos are excellent and your explanations are clear and easy to understand. I've been doing pen and ink since I was a kid, but feel more frustrated than happy with my results and would love to "fix" that. Till then, I'll keep watching these great videos. Thanks for doing them.
Like seriously, you broke that down to its lowest common denominator and built it back up again! This is one of the best videos by far regarding light and value. I am a novice with minimal talent and no art school so I am piecing this thing together by watching videos on youtube (cause this stuff is expensive) and this was incredibly helpful and helps my understand why every time I am just doodling and drawing heads I always end up using 3/4 pose. You rock!
Thanks much. I'm glad you found it useful.
I was searching scribble art and found you. your explanation of how the face tilts upwards here and comes round to the side was so informative. I love you
method of explaining. and your blah, blah . lol. your work is outstanding
thank you so much for sharing . I'm 80 , a self taught watercolor artist and
always learning.
This such a clear explanation. I'm quite amazed at how you manage to explain everything in such a concise way yet each 30 seconds seems to be something new and revealing. You've got such a talent for teaching it's insane
What a superb talent! WOW!! I filled my entire sketch book based on your teachings 😊
: ) Thats awesome!
Great teacher. My favorite on all of CZcams. And I've seen a lot if different artists.
You really 'break it down' with jazz and all.
You are amazing! I'm so glad I happened upon your channel. I appreciate the fact that you care and love to help out other artists by explaining techniques. I've always loved art but have started expanding within the last year. I'm interested in learning more types of art, especially watercolors, but it's hard to find people that actually take their time to help you understand. Thanks for being awesome. I can't wait to watch more of your videos!!
Emily Meagan :-) thanks much
Thank you! I'm kind of a beginning artist (though I've been drawing for years). You've clarified some things for me that have been causing me fits when I do portraits, about perspective. Looking forward to your future videos about portraiture. And wonderful portrait of Art Blakey.
Your ability to explain is how to draw is totally remarkable. I am so glad I discovered your videos and books.
Thank you.

Because of your way of teaching I will start drawing in my fifth decade! I've been involved in music all my life, but my art teacher told me back in time that I could be a panter if tried a little harder. Well, now i have both the time and desire to grab a pen and get started. Thank You for sharing your lessons and great greetings from Serbia ❤️

Wow thank you do much , amazing explanation
You are realy very great artist. You teach very clearly .thanks
Muchas Gracias for the great tips!
I've loved anything art all my life but never really progressed...it just doesn't sink in! I've now reached 56yrs old and started again and through watching your videos have made the biggest progress in all of my many attempts.
Now you sir, are by far the most kindest, and patient teacher this world has to offer. As these videos are rather dated I can only pray that your absence is due to you progressing to be a full on professional teacher?
I would still like your opinion even though I feel you will not be able to answer because of the above reasons.
Would you say that it is possible that someone can have the passion but no matter how much practice will never be able to grasp the concept of drawing a face which is nothing other than a child of primary school(that's what we call it here in the UK, and think it's first grade in USA?)
Forgive me of my wandering on but I trust you as a man who's skill and knowledge is second to none.
May God bless you Mr Dunn and a huge thank you for all you do
Great video and tips as usual! Can't wait for the series!!
