14.5” 6.5 Creedmoor vs 20” .308- Ballistically identical?

  • What if I told you you could achieve the same ballistics as a long and heavy 308 rifle with a shorter more maneuverable setup? I'm confident everyone would choose the shorter/ lighter setup if it truly achieved the same level of performance. With recent advancements in bullet and caliber technology we are now able to do just that! Internet rumor is that a 14.5" 6.5 Creedmoor rifle will have the same external ballistics (bullet drop and wind defelction) as a 20" .308 so in this video we are going to run both side by side to see what the real life performance difference actually is! Join me as we run a 20" .308 and a 14.5" 6.5cm to 1000 yds and beyond to see exactly what each caliber is capable of.

    I always felt the Mk11 was more of a 700-800meter gun, so I think hitting second round at 1275yds / 1160 meters with a gas operated .308 is incredible performance.

      @totenfurwotan4478 Před 3 měsíci +3

      I feel like people vastly over estimate a guns capabilities by just seeing what they can hit steel with. In use I found the m110 to be more of a functionally 500-600 meter rifle just because of how long it starts taking to get to target. On stationary targets it can be stretched further but that really changes quick on mobile targets

    • @Milspecpoptart
      @Milspecpoptart Před 3 měsíci

      As well as kinetic energy dropoff. You can hit a 600yd target with an expensive 22 setup, but its probably non- lethal and just very painful to any living "target" after slowing down over an extended range. A 308 might have enough left in it to poke a clean little hole through a soft target causing bleeding similar to a stab wound, but not an instant fight stopper necessarily. All that said, he's shooting stationary steel for scientific demonstration.

      As a hunter, I only have ballistic data out to 550m for my 20” 308. I can first round hit a 10” target at 400m all day. However, throw in weather and moving critters, 400m is at my comfort zone.
      Backfire has great content on the truth about long distance shooting in the real world.

    Target shooting I think 6.5cm has an advantage, no competition. But for me, since I only target shoot to practice for hunting I prefer the 308. The ranges at which the 6.5cm BC comes into play are past 4/500 yards and I'm not taking shots at live game once my bullets drop below a certain ftlbs of energy, especially when considering shorter barrels. Below is data for 2 of my favorite factory loads for hunting ammo if anyone wants to plug them into a ballistic calc for themselves to see what I am talking about. Once you switch to monolithics the BC drops significantly for the 6.5 class bullets and velocity matters way more. Overall really fun video, I am going to be grabing a 16' Sig Cross Trax in .308win and tossing a suppressor on it for hunting the thick Tongass rainforest. Should be getting around 2950fps with the load mentioned below and will do great inside 300 yds. Looking forward to the next video, some of the best content out there.
    Barnes vortx .308 130gr TTSX 3150 fps BC .35 vs Barnes vortx 6.5cm 127gr LRX 2825fps BC .468

    You asked at the beginning, so here's what I'm thinking; Besides exterior ballistics, mean effective pressure acting on cross sectional area of the projo allows more work to be done by the 308 even if it was the same bbl length, second, a higher twist rate requires more energy from the propellant to impart rotational energy into the projo vs velocity (assuming same projo) giving the edge again to 308 for kinetic energy.
    Alco ULDC projos have the best BC I've seen, so if its slippery enough, a 308 with more energy will outrun a 6.5 until transonic or past the point where it doesn't matter either way.

    Fantastic video, brother. I've been running a suppressed 14.5in 6.5CM AR-10 (Form-1 Approved SBR) for a few months now, and I LOVE it. Your shorty 6.5CM videos are really valuable in terms of showing what a 14.5 6.5CM gas gun can do at distance. I found that 140gr (and anything heavier) seems to be the point where the 14.5in barrel goes sub-2500fps MV. I'd be curious how the new Hornady Varmint Express (95gr) and V-Match ELD-VT (100gr) would perform for you. I chrono'd each of those two rounds recently with my Garmin Xero and I was getting an average of 2890fps on the the 95gr Varmint Express & 2845fps on the 100gr V-Match ELD-VT with 5-round groups. Huge fan of your content!

      Yes, higher muzzle velocity but those smaller bullets probably don't have the BC of the larger bullets. Would be interesting to compare performance between different projectile weights.

    • @garrickr5084
      @garrickr5084 Před 3 měsíci

      @@fubar1217 Yeah. Definitely lower BC’s. And agreed. Thats a good idea. Only issue I can see with that would be twist rates if you want to go from 95gr up to 153gr projectiles. Faster twist will do well with the heavier stuff. Lighter bullets may not perform as well. Worth trying out for sure. Science!

    • @jasonshults368
      @jasonshults368 Před 2 měsíci +1

      Lighter bullets lose a higher percentage of velocity out of a shorter barrel than heavy-for-caliber bullets do.

    Used 41.5 h4350 with these
    145s and at 2930 or 60 off my lands I got a 5 shot 1 hole group. 2770 fps es of 6, slightly flat on the primers. I loaded up 45 more at that seating depth to test next range trip. Hand feeding these is the way to go

    Excellent comparison video. I’m a 308 gas gun guy cuz I’m on a budget and my next rig will be a 308 bolt gun cuz I already have the ammo. If I ever become rich I’ll get into 6.5 whatever with a nice rifle and scope 😅

      Was looking between the 2 calibers for my next build and today I’m seeing the factory loads of both calibers are nearly the same price. Are you reloading or where are you finding cheap .308. I’d appreciate the hookup deeply lol

    • @joquin4618
      @joquin4618 Před 3 měsíci

      @@ConspiracyXClan if you’re just starting out, go with 6.5 creed since it’s about the same price for match ammo. I’ve stacked cheap 308 before the pandemic & subsequent inflation hit for about $0.45-$0.60 cents per round. Now I get my 308 ammo from target sports USA for about $0.75-$0.90 cents per round and it’s usually cheaper than 6.5 creed for ball ammo (sometimes they’ll have sellier & bellot for about $16-$17 per box of 20 rounds of 6.5 creed). At palmetto state website and their AAC ammo line has good deals on 308, 6.5, and of course 5.56

    I am always looking for a semi rifles comparison between 308 vs 6.5CM at different length. I have done POF P308 18.5” 308 vs SCAR17 DMR 16.25” 6.5CM using Federal SMK 175gr, Berger OTM 185gr and Hornady American Gunner and ELDM. I believe the tripod might add a small marginal instability to the result. Thanks for the video👍

    I'd like to see a comparison between the different chambering of same gun and equal length barrel lengths. I'm sure they're out there I just haven't seen it yet because I've got a Ruger Precision and for these 2 sizes, the precisions only come with a 308 in 22-in barrel or the 6.5 in 24-in barrel.
