Someone has probably talked about it before, but this song is a perfect example of Tony's storytelling ability. The story in this song is of a lighthouse keeper who basically never leaves his lighthouse because he has to do his job, but decides to go into the town for just one night. He ends up spending his time with a woman who is leaving the next day on a ship called the "White Pearl" (going by the lyrics it's pretty obvious what happened between them), and on his way back to the lighthouse he is attacked by someone and knocked unconscious. This results in the flame in the lighthouse going out and the White Pearl crashing into the reef and sinking, killing everyone on board, including the woman. He is put on trial, where it's revealed that his attacker was the woman's husband, and defends himself saying that if he hadn't been attacked, he would have made it back to his lighthouse in time to stop the tragedy. The court finds him innocent, but the townsfolk still shun him and hold him responsible. The song ends with the man jumping from the lighthouse into the ocean below in an effort to appease them. It's a beautifully tragic story.

Tony Kakko (the vocalist) has got amazing body-language based stage charisma. He's a natural talent, and definitely one of my favorite live performers.
Tony Kakko has one of the most unique and clean voices in metal. Fast, slow,harsh,soft, high,low he does it all, he's also a master songwriter. Not all of their songs are like this, these guys are a power metal band, that cover a wide range of subjects and some songs continue from album to album. eg. Part 1 on previous album and Part 2 on current album and Part 3 will be on the next album. Overall a well rounded band that has been around for quite awhile and are very well known and respected in the power metal community.
By wide range of subjects you mainly mean wolves right? They have a lot of songs about wolves...

You guys know, there was one gig in Tampere 2015, and there was playing 3 quite awsome bands, Children of Bo**dom, Sonata Arctica and Nightwish. You can imagine how amazing that evening was to witness ;)

Pamela killed it with this recommendation. I really like Sonata Arctica but haven't delved too deeply into their discography beyond a couple of albums. This song is awesome, and I definitely need to check out more from them! Thanks for the reaction!

This singer, Tony Kakko, is very good friend with Tuomas from Nightwish, and all of us Nightwish fans are forever grateful for Tony, because he basically saved Nightwish. Tuomas was about to depart Nightwish, and actully he already did it, but then Tuomas and Tony went to hiking, and talked about things. So Tuomas decided to continue, but they fired Sami (Bassist before Marko).
Wow, had no idea. I knew they were friends but not to this degree, awesome ❤
My wife is in love with Toni. For our 27th anniversary, we went to a Sonata Arctica concert and did a meet and greet. Elias gave me a guitar pick. Sonata is way better live than studio in my opinion. Check out 8th Commandment or Full Moon live, and you'll see what I mean

Fun fact: if you go way back in the Nightwish catalog, you’ll find Tony here doing guest vocals with them a couple of times; more recently, he joined them at Rock in Rio to sing Last Ride of the Day with Floor and Marko. Good stuff. Sonata Arctica never gets enough reaction love.
I LOVE that version of Last Ride.
The live version is a little diluted, because it is a song with a huge vocal production. If you want to have an experience out of this world, listen to the studio version. In this song, Sonata Arctica transports you into the story and makes you experience all the emotions of the drama.
First time I was made aware of Sonata was about 16 years ago when they opened for Nightwish (Tony Kakko, the singer, is bff with Tuomas Holopainen btw). Their energy was incredible and Tony's voice blew me away. "The Misery", "Replica" or "Juliet" from the live in Finland-concert will give you a further glimpse of what he is capable of as a vocalist. Generelly I prefer their studio albums to the live recordings though - there always seems to be something off with the sound engineering at their live shows. It's almost like a curse^^ EDIT: Forgot to recommend their masterpiece "Larger than Life" - this is a true Epic of Ghost Love Score-proportions :D

Sonata Arctica was THE band which made me fall in love with metal a little over 20 years ago. This song is such an underrated masterpiece (imagine if Queen would have written the song, everyone would know it) and Tony is until this day living through the emotions of this song on stage. The depth of emotion in metal music madde me stick to this genre of music and there is not a single day I am listening to some metal song in way or the other. Be it Power, Symphonic, Doom, Death or Black Metal...and many more

Kakko was once a beast of a singer, his range has suffered throughout the years but it's understandable he's getting up there on years after all.
That was probably one of the best concerts in my hometown and I too bad I wasn't still a metalhead yet at that point. Had a privilege to see them in Satama Open Air 2016 from the backstage and they played bunch of their best stuff like Blank File, Destruction Preventer, The Cage and this song. It was beautiful. One of the best concerts I've ever seen in my entire life.

Sonata Arctica and Nightwish are huge friends, have done many tours together. Tony Kakko has guest sung on a lot of Nightwish concerts as well. Sonata are fantastic live, seen them three times now... if you want a follow up, they have a whole bunch of albums, but try songs "Caleb" and "Dont Say a Word"

first thanx to react this great live band. they start in finland same time almoust like nightwish. tony kakko singer can see many times same time with nightwish and singing next to next with floor and marco. sadly this band not have good audio live videos,so many times have to looking lyric audio videos,but thats good coz there is plenty lyric and story to read. somebody not like how tony pronounce english like finnish way,but i liked clear voice and english he do. i have a right maybe they one of the best songs(they are plenty) ok thanx and have great weekend. ps. i hope we hear what your family like this band?

I won't say anything about why I like them, just this: Tony has character, the band has unique style, anyone can admit.
I have to suggest JP Leppäluoto again. 😅 He is also close friends with Tony (the singer here), and they've worked and performed together a lot over the years. In addition to my previous song suggestions though (Kuoppa and I Once Had Wings), I'd also suggest "Colder" by his first band Charon, or his cover of a well-known song in Finland called "Mombasa".
