  • Shout out to our very first Patron, Northgate for this awesome request!
In this video Tasha and I react to Sonata Arctica's White Pearl, Black Oceans. Initially, we had no Idea what we were getting ourselves into. We took a request from our very first Patron and decided to check this band out, and boy were we in for a treat.
Upon listening to the first few minutes of the song it seems like an awesome power-metal ballad of a guy who's just trying to get out the house and go party for new years eve but little did he know his life would take a drastic turn.
The increase in tempo and dark tone of the story really had us on the edge of our seats all they until the climax and conclusion.
We really did enjoy this song and want to send a very big Thank you to Northgate for not only supporting our journey but also for introducing us to this amazing band and song.
If you like for us to react to one of your favorite videos, check us out on Patreon and become a patron. Request are starting at only a $1

    Basically,
it's a guy who rarely leaves his lighthouse but for once goes to the town, meets a woman who was leaving the town and has a one night stand with her.
On the way back to his lighthouse, he is attacked by her former partner and is out cold for an entire day.
During his long absence, the lighthouse eventually ceased to function and a ship carrying numerous people, founders on the rocks, killing everyone (including that woman)
He comes to, rushes back and learns about that ship's fate but is accused of negligence by the townfolk
He is put on trial but is released by the courts when it is revealed he was attacked by that woman's former partner.
He is still held responsible by the townfolk though and he himself is feeling guilty for (in his mind) killing all those people
To atone for his supposed sins, he decides to jump to the sea....

This is, BY FAR, my absolute favorite "story song" ever. The story is compelling and tragic, the singer portrays the anguish well, the pace is frenetic in some places and penetant in others... GOD I love this song, it makes me misty-eyed every time.

I have loved this band since 2004 when I first heard them. This is really one of the penultimate Sonata songs, when they were truly on top of their game. The Boy Who Wanted to Be a Real Puppet is another really good one with a fantastic, dark story. But from Ecliptica to Reckoning Night you will not find anything bad.

This song is a masterpiece, and the lyrics are incredibly poetic. After just listening to it a few times, or even reading the lyrics, you can't really get the full story. But little by little, as you slowly decipher what this word or that metaphore refers to, you start to get more and more pieces of the story. It took me years when I was a teenager, and I still discover little details every time I read other people's takes on the meaning! @zahrans comment is a very good summary, so start with that next time you read the lyrics :)
In 2016, more than a decade after the release of the one you listened to, they released a sequel called "White Pearl, Black Oceans (Part II: By The Grace Of The Ocean)". Not as perfect and complex as this one, but still another masterpiece, you should check it out!

Geez how deeply I relate to your comment, it also took me a long time to understand it, and I still discover details everytime I listen to it again, such a masterpiece. And also, got so many goosebumps everytime I came to understand a new metaphor

Love seeing people explore new music. Finding new bands is always a fun thing. Even when the content of the songs are dark, I enjoy hearing new music. I'm no patreon as I'm unemployed, but if you have a few spare minutes sometime look up Eluveitie 'Call of The Mountains' or 'A Rose For Epona'. Minimum metal vocals but her voice is amazing.

You just discovered another great Finnish metal band besides Nightwish. This is no wonder as Finland is the greatest metal nation in the world with over 650 metal bands per 1M inhabitants, no other country comes even close. More Finnish metal bands that you could try out include e.g. Amorphis, Beast in Black, Battle Beast, Stratovarius, Apocalyptica, Insomnium, Wintersun & Ensiferum.
You might continue discovering more Finnish bands from Wintersun: Wintersun - Time (TIME I Live Rehearsals At Sonic Pump Studios) REMASTER czcams.com/video/4UMwLxFNKS0/video.html

They got too comfortable & lazy methinks. eg: They did a "part 2" of this song on a later album where basically they undid the tragic element of *this* song.

  • @VoIcanoman
    @VoIcanoman Před 5 lety +1

Finland has some incredible metal bands. Nightwish, Amorphis and Children of Bodom are the one everyone knows about (and Lordi, who somehow managed to win Eurovision with their bastardized, utterly commercial version of metal...terrible band), but Sonata Arctica is JUST as amazing as Nightwish (though in a very different way), and Ensiferum, Moonsorrow, Finntroll (polka metal!), Korpiklaani, Burning Point, Battlelore, Stratovarius, Turisas and Wintersun are all worth listening to at some point.
But might I recommend a Swedish metal band? *_Pain of Salvation_* is an incredible progressive metal band that have taken prog to the next level with amazing songwriting and exceptional lyricism. The music isn't (usually) a massive wank-fest either (like some prog can be) - guitar solos are pretty rare, and the technical elements of the music, while present in abundance, generally _serve_ the song, improving it...they aren't just put there because they sound cool.
If you want to give them a shot, I'd recommend reacting to a song from their most recent album, not because it's their best one (though it's definitely top 3 for me), but because it is a good place to generally get an idea of what they sound like. Also, it's an intensely story-driven affair, which makes it pretty easy to understand and enjoy (since you liked the story element of _White Pearl, Black Oceans,_ I figure you'd like this as well). Daniel Gildenlöw (the band's lead singer, songwriter and guitarist) was admitted to hospital in 2014 with what appeared to be a normal skin infection; unfortunately for him, it turned out to be the extremely deadly flesh-eating bacteria (necrotizing fasciitis). His doctors advised him that they'd do their best (and they did, performing several surgeries in their attempt to beat the bacteria), but that there was a decent chance he'd die (this bacteria kills about 27% of people who contract it...a higher mortality rate than some strains of *EBOLA* ). While he was in this unenviable situation, he did what any good artist would do...he expressed himself with his art, writing lyrics and music that became a concept album (called _"In the Passing Light of Day"_ ), which details mainly the "in the moment" thoughts and experiences he had when faced with this life-and-death situation, plus reflections on his accomplishments and failures, loves and losses (including a REALLY bad break-up), triumphs and regrets. He spent *six months* in hospital, but he did (fortunately) pull through, though he had a long rehab period before he really got his strength back (which explains the long time it took to release the album - he wrote it in 2014, and it didn't come out until 2017).
Anyway, the combination of the (harrowing) true story and exceptional songwriting makes this album one of the best concept albums I've ever heard*. I guess sometimes great works of art can emerge from terrible suffering.
For a reaction, I'd start with the opening track, _On a Tuesday._ Lyric video here: czcams.com/video/oEk-csUrQp8/video.html
Thanks for making this channel, I really enjoy your content!
*Actually, ALL of Pain of Salvations' creations are concept albums (though they do have a few live albums).
