When you get back, more Mastodon!
'Hearts Alive' is easily one of their most impressive songs, about the battle between Ahab and Moby Dick
Hey man, react to Caligula's Horse - Dream the Dead. If you don't like it, I'll give you your money back.
@@jr34v3r yes some of there best work right there!
Ye should react to Beatles tommrow never knows it the most revolutionary track of all time its trippy
Should react to Havok - Unnatural selection
Letâs be real, we were all waiting for dat riff
The czar from mastodon is similar to this one but honestly nearly anything mastodon does is good shit
I think The Czar has a more satisfying conclusion
The Czar is the shit. Made me a Mastodon fan.
Same
Don't stayyyyy, run awayyyy...
Such a killer hook. That song is a masterpiece.
The strength of this band is 1) the mix of Southern groove rock, psychedelic sludge, and thrash 2) Brann Dailor's drumming 3) unifying concepts on most of their albums. Here are the songs that I think show off all those elements pretty well:
"Megalodon": atmospheric and dissonant opener, very aggressive and proggy time signatures, unexpected injection of Southern-style guitar licks. This song comes from the album "Leviathan," which is a concept album based on Moby Dick and sort of Northern European folklore
"The Wolf is Loose": album opener on "Blood Mountain." Opens up on a tear, unlike the slow burners you've heard so far. Has amazing groove, drumming (as always), and gets in and out quickly.
"Capillarian Crest": also from "Blood Mountain." If you want to see these guys show off their prog chops, but in a much quicker and aggressive song, this is it.
"Divinations": From "Crack the Skye." If you like the Russia/Eastern European-tinged mysticism and sound of the first two songs you've heard, but with a higher tempo, this is a good one.
People choose "Oblivion" and "the Last Baron" so much because the former is very accessible by Mastodon standards, while the latter has the topsy-turvy prog change-ups that alot of non-metal people appreciate. But they're a much deeper band than those songs would lead you to believe, and it'll be worth your while to push further.
yes!
Great description and track suggestions! Capillarian Crest is the shit!!
Exactly
Mastodon - Jaguar God
That groovy-ass riff with the harmonics in it is arguably my fave riff of all time. So fucking good
Sultans Curse, Crack the Skye, The Wolf is Loose, The Hunter, Fallen Torches, Jaguar God, Scorpion Breath Roots Remain, The Czar are all bangers. The one you'll probably enjoy the most is North Side Star which also is also a banger
Mastodon - Toe to Toes [In-Studio Performance] is what you need man. I got you, you'll enjoy this most of the songs you've heard.
Definitely love this track
Defo this one
Yeah, this one
Shame itâs not more popular as other songs
Hey i did a patreon request for this song on another very good reaction channel if you want to see it, it's called "Rappers React Mastodon Toe to Toes" and the channel is Trash Talkers id love if you checked them out and I'm subbing to this guy too since Mastodon reactions are awesome.
The Czar is my favorite off this album by far, definately worth a listen
The riff at 10:45 is one of the best Mastodon riffs ever put down man. Pure groove.
one of the best riffs ever written*
From start to finish, Crack the Skye is in my top 5 albums of all time.
10:43 Hahaha love the reaction! One of the best riffs ever
The title track might be my favourite from this album, it's powerful.
Scott Kelly's vocals are insane on that track. And mixed with Brann's melodic vocals... Powerful is definitely the word.
The Czar or Crystal Skull next đ love this song, album and band
Where Owls Know My Name
đŠ
đŠ OWL CLUB UNITE I FUCKIN LOVE U GUYS XXXXXXXX
Rivers of Nihil is dope
Mastodon - Tread Lightly
, The Motherload, The Wolf Is Loose
The Czar same album beast of a song
Yes, that's my favorite part too. And yes, they do have lots of such. Welcome to Mastodon my friend, I truly appreciate you are getting into it. I would suggest to get into the middle of the album to be consistent, while you are at it, which is "The Czar".
And as to your request, I would suggest whatever people are recommending here, I'm sure there won't be a bad song.
Definitely The Czar!
This album saved my life. I'm not kidding. The whole album is fantastic, and Mastodon is such a gem of a band.
Mastodon STEAMBREATHER!
Yes yes yes yes yes. I've been waiting for this one!
Steambreather for suree
Steam breather is the groove you seek
Groovy Mastodon tracks: Chimes at Midnight, High Road, Black Tongue, Sleeping Giant, Curl of the Burl, The Motherload, Halloween.
You have to do The Czar next, that track is NASTY
The Czar!
Check out The Czar, Jaguar God, Crack the Skye, The Wolf is Loose, Blood and Thunder, Roots Remain, Steambreather, Sleeping Giant, there are so many good Mastodon songs that Iâm definitely forgetting a few
Sleeping Giant is a master piece
Mastodon's newer albums have more of the groove you gravitated too in this track. Worth checking those out.
It's great to see anyone expanding their musical horizons, keep it up man, you're doing a great job! What I get from Mastodon is an atmosphere - something resembling the definition of 'maelstrom' or 'bedlam'. Primeval themes like leviathans, jaguars, mountains - the stuff that early civilisations feared and deified - Mastodon bring that to life like nobody else. I think some of their songs could be appreciated on their own but to take their music at face value (per track) feels to me like it misses the bigger picture
Well said
One of the most groove based track is Mastodon - Sultan's curse, this is just epic track, first time I heard it it became my favorite song:) and please do Gojira - Pray live redrocks this is fucking unbelievable how good this extended version is:) and it's definitely groovy!!!
You need to just go ahead and listen to the whole album. Its epic.
I love how with Mastodon, everyone has their own favorite song. Each album is so different so itâs all just a matter of what you feel like listening to. Iâm on a Blood Mountain kick right now so my vote goes to This Mortal Soil but The Czar is probably their best song ever.
My favorite Mastodon song ever.
This is what you call a MASTERPIECE
Gotta check out Crack the Skye. The message behind the song is so sad but its such a wonderful piece of music
Not typically a Mastodon fan, but i loved that song. Thanks for the great review (and recommendation from the community)!
Nice one Drew, I LOVE Mastodon. Gutted that I didn't get to see them in Punchestown during the summer at Sunstroke 2020. Ah well, hopefully next year meas cara :)
Mastodon! So I think that you would love Hearts Alive, it's the song that got me into them and I still get back to it quite often.
Finally!! I was the one writing MASTODONNNN in every video hahaha thanks for checking them! I love your videos!
When I saw them in 2017 they opened with this song. It was EPIC
The title track is my fav from this album, but they're all pretty great. Amazing album! Their best imo!
For MASTODON, here are my favorites in no order: Motherload, High Road, Steambreather, Tread Lightly, Black Tongue, Curl of the Burl, Colony of Birchman, Iron Tusk.
6 min in: "I hope they show off"
Me: "what do you call the last 6 min?!"
Waiting for the drop!
Late comment, donât care. Just feeling this response.
Mastodon was my gateway drug to metal (and all itâs glorious sub genres) and I just love the feeling as if Iâm showing you (and other reactors) this band for the first time and holy crap you actually liked the same music that Iâm into! Such a good feeling in dark times.
Mastodon - The Czar.
You said you were just wanting the final minutes to be a showcase of what they can do.
The perfect song that comes to mind for that sort of thing is Between the Buried and Meâs âSwim to the Moonâ.
Practically the entire second half of that song is just instrumental wizardry. It has everything: guitar solos, drum solos, keyboard solos, clean and harsh vocals, riffs for days...
A prog masterpiece!
On the subject of instrumental wizardry, have you heard of a band called Pelican? If you like heavy, you like prog and you value musicianship you should check them. They don't have a vocalist so they really do have to have the music do the talking :) I'd recomend Drought or March to the Sea
Yes, that is well said and I fully agree!
This song puts me into a literal Trance every time
Maith an fear,a Drew. NĂŹos mĂČ Mastodon! Good Man,Drew. More Mastodon! This song is defo one of their most adventerous, and I see why its popular with the Prog guys along with their audience who like their heavier songs. "Crack the Skye" is a super journey to take. I actually prefer their last coupla albums. Huge catchy heavy groooves and super melodic songs. Theyve got sometin' for everyone so dig in!! Great reaction!
Mastodon is flawless no matter what track you pick.
The Czar is much more groovy and has a more satisfying conclusion, so I'd recommend that one. I understand that The Last Baron kinda stretches some parts.
Opeth A fair judgement/burden
Great pick
Fuck yeah!! Great reaction, I think you'd like The Czar (the other big epic track from the same album) or Colony of Birchmen (from the previous album Blood Mountain). And of course, Haken - The Architect :)
mastodon has some absolute bangers, Circle of Cysquatch, Blood and Thunder, March of the fireants, Diamond in the witch house, these guys are legends.
The Czar, Blood and Thunder
Everytime i hear "Encased in crystal" i think of Merlin in the movie Excalibur
Lol, i was listening to this album today, i love Mastodon lml
Dude please do scorpion breath. I would argue it is their most overlooked song
Mastodon - Blood and Thunder
Mastodon - Megalodon
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Should definitely check out some Crystal Lake if you haven't already!
Just a random bit of info on the Crack the Skye album, they were going for like a dark 70âs prog rock vibe so they went out and got a bunch of guitars, amps, and drums that were manufactured back in the day to help give it a sort of classic rock tone.
If you want groove and monstruous riffs, i heavily recommend Circle of Cysquatch, Hearts Alive or Crystal Skull!
Black Tongue and High Road are 100000% groove
That groove you were talking about had a harmonic slide in the guitar riff. No effects, just a legendary riff
Mastodon - Stargasm
No question: same album: fourth track, The Czar : Usurper/Escaspe.....Of you are trying to feel the same grove but this would be the masterpiece on this album in my humble opinion.... not really that humble as I think I have good taste lol. Good work sir.
Next: The Czar and Crack the Skye
Check out Fallen Torches, Word to the Wise, Halloween, Curl of the Burl, Sleeping Giant, Megalodon, Mother Puncher.
Blood & thunder ,capilliarian quest,+ give rush a whirl
Mastodon - Toes to Toes is a great song I'm sure you'll like
Amon Amarth - War of the Gods
Amon Amarth - Free Will Sacrifice
Amon Amarth - Valhall Awaits Me
Iron tusk by mastodon. I think that one's groovy. Also even if you don't react to, give a listen to moontooth
Literally everything Mastodon have made is fantastic! Blood mountain is a perfect album.
Check out:
Crack the skye
Colony of the birchmen
Circle of cysquatch
Blood and thunder
High road
Meglodon
Show yourself the czar
I just got into these guys , Check out Emerald City , Chimes at midnight on the around the Sun album .. fuckin great songs that you will dig !!
I would recommend Hearts Alive, but whatever you react to don't give on them as every album they have they sound like a different band and there's definitely something from them out there you'll love!
Smoooth Grooves from Mastodon- High Road, The Motherload, Jaguar God, Curl of the Burl. You will get shout outs to their earlier albums-they are top stuff, but from Crack the Skye onwards theres been much more singing, and even more groove and psychedelia that brilliantly swirls together. That I reckon is what yer after, mate.
Steambreather, Tread Lightly, The Czar, Capillarian Crest, Jaguar God, Hearts Alive, The Wolf is Loose, Crystal Skull, Sleeping Giant, Roots Remain, Diamonds in the Witch House.
Love it! Would you do Ghost of Karelia some time?
IRON TUSK, march of the fire ants, hearts alive, colony of birchmen, oh so manyâŠâŠ
Mastodon have tonnes of songs with the groove elements like that riff. Songs like Circle of Cysquatch, Capillarian Crest, Iron Tusk. Canât really go wrong lol
I recommend you listen to Sleeping Giant or Cold Dark Place, which are some of Mastodon's more groovy songs.
I like Colony of Birchmen, one of my favourite Mastodon riffs in there.
Check out live at the aragon. How was it getting stale. You need to see these guys live.
I think you would enjoy Colony of Birchmen and Andromeda by them. Hearts Alive and The Last Baron are their greatest works.
Hello bro! My suggestions are : Crystal Skull, Colony of Birchmen, Clandestinity, Circle of Sasquach...
The Czar will give you similar vibes, but there's so much more.
I'll wait 'till you get to March of the Fire Ants :D
Mastodon- steambreather
- sleeping giants
- this mortal soil
- ember City đ
I like to listen to mastodon while I play bloodborne
THE CZAR, THE CZAR, THE CZAR
Mastodon songs with groove: Crystal Skull(featuring Scott Kelly of Neurosis- will get you headbanging quickly), Island(one of my personal favorites. harsher vocals but nothing near Opeth, more like yelling), Mother Puncher, All The Heavy Lifting(MUST be Live at Brixton version as it's different than the studio version. it's darker and heavier than studio version, it was overproduced on the album), Capillarian Crest
Literally none of these....
Halloween by Mastodon.
Mastadon - sleeping giants!
Recommending something different, try Alcest- Eclosion. This genre is called Blackgaze.
Mastodon - Jaguar God absolutely man
Serbian Divide is super underrated on this album, thatâs my go to!
Correction that song is off of Blood Mountain.
The czar!
Mastodon - High Road
This song is loosely about Rasputin btw. The last Baron of Russia. A lot of this album is inspired by his legends.
Reason for Oblivion being the first song. Progressive music is not music for the masses. Prog is music for musicians. Thatâs what Iâve always told people. Because of its composition and complexity, you canât take someone who listens to the radio, top 40 bullshit, and sit them down with Blackwater Park or Hearts Alive. Theyâll just think itâs noise. Someone must already have an appreciation and understanding of music. But, prog bands, Opeth, Mastodon, BTBAM, they all have one thing in common. They make music that is more palatable and commercially viable for certain reasons. Not so much exposure, but from my point of view being a classically trainer musician who loves prog, we like to be bad ass as fuck early on in our writing. Complex. Impressive. We want to make shit that is absolutely original. However, as we mature as musicians, we get old and realize less is more. Not that we canât write that insane shit, but our tastes and creativity change and mature with us. Look at Opeth, Mastodon, BTBAM. Their timeline is generally the same. Very complex and insane in the beginning. Twenty years later, mellow... ish, still complex, but easier for people not experienced in prog to digest. Prog is a journey. Oblivion has been the beginning of many many journeys in prog. People should be thanking these tracks and the musicians.
More Mastodon!! Do Colony!!
If you like groove, it doesn't really get any more groovy than Mastodon - Steambreather
