You guys don’t understand the stress this video caused me to get out, new editing software and new thumbnail editor - bare with me for a while guys, learning every day!🙌🏻 drop a like for more Mastodon! 🔥
The 'spice' voice is Brent Hinds. Troy and Brann also sing in the band. Troy has the "growl" voice, and Brann has the high clean voice and only sings on the more recent albums. Scott Kelly from Neurosis sings on a bunch of the heavy songs. Check out Crack the Skye from this same album for a wicked Scott Kelly track.
Don't sleep on their music videos. It makes me love them even more. Highly recommend "Asleep in the Deep". Dope song and best cat video on the internet!
The only advice i can give you is don't crank the volume too high. I know it's hard to resist, but that's the only way you can avoid tinnitus. You won't want to deal with it in the long run, trust me.
The lead vocals on the verses were the drummer, Brann Dailor, on the pre-chorus it was the bass player, Troy Sanders, and on the chorus it was Brent Hinds, one of the guitar players. Also I’d recommend anything from the Leviathan album, and definitely Colony of Birchmen and Sleeping Giant from Blood Mountain!
Big Homie Steve The Metal Head the lead vocals were normally done by Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds, up until the Crack The Skye album, where Brann Dailor sang for the first time. They had a stand-alone vocalist, the Eric Saner you heard Drew mention, but he was only in the band briefly and I don’t believe he ever recorded with them. They’re a talent bunch of guys man!
@@stephanemarley4102 You are correct, Eric never recorded with the band, though there are some old live videos with him in the band. Brent Hinds, Troy Sanders and Brann Dailor are the lead singers, though Troy does a lot of the vocal work as he is on most of the songs in some form. Love this band, have seen them live twice, once on Blood Mountain tour and then again for the Crack the Skye tour, absolutely amazing!!!!!
@Jeff Pearson they are great live, I’ve seen them a few times myself. I was late being introduced to the band, but I saw them twice on the Crack the Skye tour, and I saw them again on the Emperor of Sand tour. They never disappoint.
@Big Homie Steve The Metal Head all 3 of them are lead singer just depends on the song. Seems Troy the bassist and Brann the drummer do the most lead vocals currently these days but Brent still also does lead vocals. So basically they are all lead singers it really just depends on the song, they all switch off on some songs like this one or sometimes it’ll just be 1 or 2 of them but it’s always switching depending on the song, no one definitive lead singer tho.
Welcome to the rabbithole 😍 best "new" band and probably my favorite band of all time. Not a bad record by them! Crystal Skull, The Czar, Crack the Skye, the Last Baron, Blood And Thunder, Iron Tusk, Megalodon, Seabeast, Mother Puncher, Crusher Destroyer, Sleeping Giant Clandestiny, Jaguar God, Sultans Curse, Asleep in the Deep. I can go on forever 😂😍
As many people have probably said - you heard all three Mastodon vocalists on this track - clean verses are drummer Brann Dailor, deeper pre-chorus is bassist Troy Sanders, and the raspy chorus is guitarist Brent Hinds. All absolute BEASTS (but still with a great sense of humour...this is NOT a band that takes themselves too seriously) For heavy and thrashy, you'd probably dig the tracks *Iron Tusk* and *Blood and Thunder,* two monster Mastodon classics. For something from their "weirder," more prog/cosmic side maybe *Ghost of Karelia* or *The Last Baron.* There's too many tracks to pick from, and much like Tool or Opeth there are a bunch of different sounds on their albums. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
I haven't listened to this Album in a while... Guess I am getting back to it later, thanks 😂 Also, the Czar from the same Album is a really cool track too
Yessssss!!! Please do Aqua Dementia, Colony of Birchmen, or Mother Puncher next! Brann the drummer, Troy the bassist, Brent the guitarist are all vocalists btw. Saner never made it.
The last baron and the czar off this album are also great tracks. My favorite album is Leviathan. They have a heavier sound and hard vocals on this album. Also everyone sings at some point in the band
The mention of artwork brings Baroness to mind. They are kind of prog, and terribly underrated if you ask me. I love 'em. But yeah, Baroness' singer/frontman John Baizley does all their album art too, and it's really striking. Check them out sometime.
Yes! Yes! Baroness is amazing! I actually discovered them before Mastodon. Now I have completely listened to the complete discographies of both bands. A great one-two punch!
@@barkingmadman1169 I, myself, discovered Baroness after Mastodon, but damn was it worth it. Blue Record was my jam for almost an entire year. Yellow & Green was great as well. I just love how all their albums have a distinct sound that makes them special.
I'd actually really love to see a reaction to Chimes At Midnight. Divinations, Iron Tusk, Curl Of The Burl and Blood And Thunder are all solid choices too
My first Mastodon song was Blood And Thunder But I fuckin love The Motherload! To me it's the perfect blend of this prog-ish drumming, excellent guitar playing and a fine deal of pop-apeal
The Motherload has so much crossover appeal to people who might not be as receptive to the heavier end of the spectrum. Like Pantera at their best, no one can deny the sheer *groove* it has.
Iron Tusk , Steambreather, Toe to Toes, Colony Of Birchmen, Blood And Thunder, the newest song Fallen Torches. And thats just off the top of my head . Mastodon is legit one of the best bands I have ever heard
Dude, the effects on the video look so good, that is some kind of editing I haven't seen in other reaction channels. And I can only tell you that Mastodon became one of my top bands ever since I started listening to their music. They cover a lot of ground in their career. At this point, there is no lead singer, all of them do some parts as they have different singing styles that matches one or another part better.
There are actually 3 singers, in order they sing in this song: Brann Dailor (drums), Troy Sanders (bass), and Brent Hinds (guitar). I think you were referring to Brent with the "western style" voice. So glad you finally checked these guys out! I think you'll like High Road, Halloween, and Divinations to start.
Ah, You finally got some studio reference head-cans! Very Good! another one of my faves from this album is The Czar. Check it out and you may transport to another dimension with those new headphones.
I'm not sure why "Oblivion" is always the first song people recommend to non-Mastodon fans. It's a fine song, but not really representative of what the band is truly capable of. I think "Seabeast," "Megalodon," "The Wolf is Loose," or even something like "Capilarian Crest" are songs with more range, dynamism, and groove.
When I first heard "Megalodon" I knew I had to learn how to play it. Took a couple years before I was good enough, but it has like 6 riffs good enough to sustain an entire song.
I was late to the Mastodon party and this was the first song that I heard from them which perked my curiosity. It's very palatable and inviting to nearly any experienced music fan.
RIGHT?! Why does everyone suggest this song? I don't feel like it's a good introduction. It's good, but not sure it's what I'd suggest for a first listen.
These guys are my favourite band. I've met them twice too and they are absolute gents. Capillarian Crest is a must. Brann's drumming is incredible in it. These guys have written some truly incredible songs. Try any of these and you won't be disappointed, Iron Tusk, Hearts Alive, Megalodon, March of the Fire Ants, The Wolf is Loose, The Last Baron, The Czar
Such a great band! Crack The Skye is my favourite album by these guys. Other songs to check out by Mastodon are Colony of Birchmen, Blood And Thunder, Megalodon, Sultans Curse, Crystal Skull... plus so many more haha but these are good ones to continue with.
YESSS, finally! Since "Oblivion" is the first track of a concept album (and what a f*****g concept that is!), may I suggest doing the whole thing in sequence?
I remember mastadon opening for a bunch of bands I liked when I was a in my late teens, and I hated them. i havent listened to them since then despite becoming a huge fan of prog. today, i clicked this to just try and give them another shot. this song was amazing. gonna be wearing out their catalogue on spotify today.
This is one of their best songs in terms of demonstrating the different styles and timbres each vocalist (of the three!) brings to the table. It might not be obvious if you weren't already aware, but once you know, it's clear - and it's awesome, like listening to Kerry and Jeff trade Slayer leads throughout a song.
More Mastodon! From this album: 'The Czar...' or 'The Last Baron.' Or, 'Blood and Thunder,' 'Crystal Skull,' 'Colony of Birchmen,' or 'High Road' from other albums. 🤘
Mastodon, Gojira, and Opeth are the gods of modern prog metal imo. They all represent different types of prog metal, but did their respective sounds better than anyone else and inspired so many bands to follow their sounds. Mastodon is my favorite of the 3, and in fact my favorite of all time. The way they write their songs is unrivaled imo, and they have yet to put out a less than stellar album. The album this song opens, “Crack the Skye” is absolute perfection. The title track, The Last Baron, and The Czar are for sure worth checking out, but if you wanna try some other stuff here are some good ones: Hearts Alive, Sleeping Giant, Mother Puncher, Ember City, Asleep in the Deep, Jaguar God, Circle of Cysquatch, Blood and Thunder, Roots Remain, and All the Heavy Lifting. Sorry I said so many, but it’s impossible for me to choose just a couple so maybe some of these will pop up in other comments haha
The Czar is another amazing track from this album:D Also it would be interesting to see your reaction to Haken, a good song from them would be propably Falling Back To Earth or Prosthetic
Hey bro, welcome to the Mastofam! In this track we have: Brann Dailor (drummer and 1st singer) Troy Sanders (bassist and 2nd singer) Brent Hinds (main solo guitarist and 3rd Singer) Bill Kelliher (riffmaster guitarist and ONLY screams in one or two Mastodon songs) Take care and keep on listening great music. Hug from Portugal
I think the song is in reference to brann's (the drummer/verse singer) sister's death with the line "I tried to bore a whole into the ground breaking all the fingers and the nails from my hand" being about how he apparently tried to dig his sister up with his bare hands because he missed her so much
Blood and thunder, The Hunter, Jaguar god, Sultans Curse, Scorpion breath, fallen torches, the wolf is loose, Mother puncher, divinations, the last baron, crack the skye, ember city, chimes at midnight, tread lightly or north side star all need reactions
The song is about the drummers sister killing herself when they were young due to bullying and he felt guilty for not helping her and tried to dig up her grave with his bare hands to see her one more time. Really sad stuff.
My favorite band. Crack the Skye is a prog metal masterpiece. Check out their song The Sparrow or their heavier stuff like Heart's Alive or O'le Nessie. The Czar, The Last Baron or Sleeping Giant also.
Ill shout out again fro Trivium to you aswell. "What the dead men Say" is a superb slice of melodic metal with I think, a lot of the components you've liked about metal in general since ya got into Gojira and Dream Theater rolling through it. Groove, melody, brilliant musicianship, a great chorus- and a Gojira slide to slice up the main riff aswell.
Audio Technica are super good. Depending on the model, you may have monitoring headphones, which may not have the bass that other models have as they are used for production. They sound different to regular headphones because they have a very wide and flat frequency response, no added bass and simply don’t distort the sound. The whole point of monitor headphones is to sound as accurate as possible.Commercial headphones increase the bass automatically, some even have a “Loudness” switch to enhance the bass levels even more, simply to give us that kind of sound. That’s why, when listening through a pair of monitor headphones, the song just sounds different, it´s not a question of “which one is better?” but, what kind of sound you like more. Think of it this way; if the bass is too high, maybe there are some other elements of the song that you are not being able to perceive as well as you should, and simply by switching to a set of headphones that don´t have that added bass, it gives the song a whole new personality.
Finally some Mastodon, yea! Going to check out the other stuff you did of them as well. If you're up for something that's not Prog at all and you want to venture out a bit, check out Mizmor - Cairn to God ... or This Unabating Wakefulness. Both epic tracks, that I would love to see a reaction for.
Bedazzled Fingernails, Black Tongue, Tread Lightly. You really cannot go wrong with any tune from this band! and If you enjoy them check out Baroness, not much of a prog group but they are also from Georgia and have some great hard rock songs.
If not Symphony X for more awesome prog metal, please do Revocation. They are one of the newest MOST underrated bands I've heard of in a long time. The guitarist Dave Davidson has so much incredible soul behind his solos for such and insanely heavy trip. The guy just flips a switch and BAM! I would recommend any of the following - A Starless Darkness - Invidious - The Tragedy of Modern Ages - Across Forests and Fjords - Dismantle the Dictator - Communion
Hell yeah, I'm happy. Do the March of the Fire Ants next, please. ^_^ P.S. just kidding bout the song recomendation - that's a tit bit too heavy one, but I'm really happy to see you reacting on a song I've learned on guitar.
Yeah, its called burn in for headphones/IEMs and etc. Its a big thing talked about in the audiophile world. Give them about 8-12hrs of burn in time and they should start to sound even better.
Mastodon was one of my gateways into metal. Very lucky to have seen them 3 times too! Cheers for the reaction! 🤟 worth checking out Crystal Skull.. much heavier than this but an absolutely banger
Welcome to the wild world of Mastodon, lad! Should you delve more into 'em, you are in for a treat of rock riches. Their first 3 albums are more or less their "heaviest"- especially in terms of the vocals. This album you are hearing Oblivion from, "Crack the Skye" contains much more melodic vocals as you can hear. The drummer started doing lead vocals here- and really, hes my personal favourite of the three singers in the band. Each vocal suits the tone of whatever crazy riffage is rampaging behind it, so theres lots of variety. All their albums have highlights- but if you wanna hear more of the melodic side to them, you might gravitate towards the last coupla albums. For a huge heavy rush of battering ram riffs and vocals, "Blood and Thunder" is a fan favourite. For something more brighter, melodic, the swinging grooves of "High Road" or "Mother Load" will work. They are a great band overall, so enjoy whatever you find. Random fact- yer man on guitar, Bill Kellliher: His Da is a Kerryman and moved to the US when he was a chap. Bill himself has an Irish passport aswell.
Awesome!! Mastodon is my favorite "heavy" band for sure. Their earlier albums are definitely heavier and nastier, and they got more melodic as the discography progressed, but they still keep that "chugginess" in the sound, with more "clean" singing mixed in. Other great tracks for you to check out are Divinations, The Last Baron, Seabeast, Sleeping Giant, Blood and Thunder, Asleep in the Deep, and the list goes on!
The song opens with the drummer Brann singing, then it goes to Troy the bass player and finally the chorus is Brent the lead guitarist with Troy backing him up. The way they trade off nowadays is epic.
Check out 'The Last Baron' from them, its a journey, I can't describe it otherwise... Oblivion was the one that got me into Mastodon aswell, but The Last Baron is just great.

😂🤣
Love the music video 😂
Finally some Mastodon, yea! Going to check out the other stuff you did of them as well.
If you're up for something that's not Prog at all and you want to venture out a bit, check out Mizmor - Cairn to God ... or This Unabating Wakefulness. Both epic tracks, that I would love to see a reaction for.
You ought to try going down the sludgier route. Neurosis. Isis. Either of those would do.
Neurosis - Stones From the Sky
Isis - So Did We
YES!
let’s goooo, please react to the rest of this album it is flawless
Bedazzled Fingernails, Black Tongue, Tread Lightly. You really cannot go wrong with any tune from this band! and If you enjoy them check out Baroness, not much of a prog group but they are also from Georgia and have some great hard rock songs.
If not Symphony X for more awesome prog metal, please do Revocation. They are one of the newest MOST underrated bands I've heard of in a long time. The guitarist Dave Davidson has so much incredible soul behind his solos for such and insanely heavy trip. The guy just flips a switch and BAM! I would recommend any of the following
- A Starless Darkness
- Invidious
- The Tragedy of Modern Ages
- Across Forests and Fjords
- Dismantle the Dictator
- Communion
Please do more Lamb of God reactions! My picks are Now you got something to die for OR Ghost Walking! :)
Mastodon. 👍
Hearts alive or capilliarian quest by mastodon are both cracking songs.
The Last Baron will be your favourite song ever
Jaguar God, Megalodon, Where strides the behemoth, march of the fire-ants, steambreather. All great traks
Mastodon - Roots Remain 🤯
This video made me sub. Definitely wanna see you react to more of them.
Mastodon was one of my gateways into metal. Very lucky to have seen them 3 times too! Cheers for the reaction! 🤟 worth checking out Crystal Skull.. much heavier than this but an absolutely banger
Mastodon - Stagasm should be next your reaction. Thats how I started listen to Mastodon.
You have to check out TesseracT and Leprous. Two fantastic modern prog bands.
And some Haken or Riverside too, both great prog bands.
mastodon makes the best music videos too
Class just watched this and reminded me to go listen to the album crack the skye again it’s a masterpiece
Bravo! Thanks for listening Mastodon! Request Jaguar God. Steambreather.
Love the prod place
Yey!!! (you should check out Tesseract, you might like it!)
The whole Crack the Skye album is a must!!!!!!!
Mastodon - The Czar: Usurper / Escape / Martyr / Spiral. Prog metal epic from the same album.
The song opens with the drummer Brann singing, then it goes to Troy the bass player and finally the chorus is Brent the lead guitarist with Troy backing him up. The way they trade off nowadays is epic.
Mastodon- Blood and thunder
Symphony X - Evolution!
You need to listen whole Crack the Skye - LAST BARON's RIFF _ BEST RIFF IN THE WORLD
Check out 'The Last Baron' from them, its a journey, I can't describe it otherwise... Oblivion was the one that got me into Mastodon aswell, but The Last Baron is just great.
BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME - SELKIES: THE ENDLESS OBSESSION.
