I bought my 338 win about 35 yrs ago when I moved up to the Yukon. It is a Winlite mod 70 and at 6.2 lbs, it is a handful. That said, I hunted with it almost exclusively for the next 20 yrs and shot more game, species and total number, than all my other rifles combined. To say it is a favorite of mine would be a gross understatement.

I went all out with this cartridge! I loved everything Adam Weatherby was selling on it and purchased a custom rifle from the Weatherby shop chambered in 338 RPM. Living in Alaska I wanted that all around rifle for sheep up to brown bear, I think another aspect of this is that gets over looked is it was developed for a purpose. It’s light, it’s efficient, and the rifles it’s chambered for are more capable than we can be. But I love my 338 RPM 👌🏼

I had no idea the 338 Winmag and the 338 WBY RPM were so close performance.
For for some reason I had it in my head that the winmag was a bohemith of a sledgehammer and the Weatherby was a more dainty sleek new-age mountain cartridge

You should check the Cartridge case dimentions and powder case cap. to compare(I like Nosler Load data, Nice pics). Back in the day Wby. brought out the 340 to out perform the 338 WM. But it's a handfull. The 33 Nosler about the same as the 340 Wby. Today a Shorter, fater case for Std Actions(Some Short/Med actions) the fade. More modern, but with the same performace.

Really wish Weatherby wouldn’t have put SUCH a short barrel on their Backcountry rifle chambered for this cartridge. An 18” barrel takes it below 35 Whelen ballistics, and results in enormous blast. A 22” barrel would have been a much better choice IMO.

It's like comparing a 300 Weatherby mag to a 300 win mag. They are both 30 caliber, the Weatherby goes faster, but kicks the crap out of you.The 300 win mag in a rifle that comes in at 10 to 10.5 loaded with a bi-pod is perfect.I like a straight stock,no monte-carlo hump. The hump gives more felt recoil and doesn't help in my opinion.

🕵️‍♂️ As You Know, the 338 WM has a Larger Frontal Area (Makes a Bigger Hole, Going At Similar Velocities and Using The Same Bullet Construction) than the 300 WM and Can Shoot Heavier Bullets! Suprisingly, the 338 WM isn't that much different in recoil, though! So, Let's Run the Numbers in Horneday's Ballistics Calculator (Using My Typical Hunting Conditions - Elevation = 8,000 ft, Temperature = 32 F, Wind, = 10 mph, Relative Humidity = 20%, Zero = 200 yards) and Compare: 338 WM - MV with 225 grain Nosler Accubond (B.C. of 0.611) and 71.5 grains of IMR 4350 powder - MV = 2,882 ft/s; Drop @500 yards = -36.3"; Drift = -10.7"; Energy @500 Yards = 2,676 Ft Lbs; Recoil = 36.93 Ft Lbs! For the 300 WM using a 210 grain Nosler Accubond Bullet (B.C. of 0.661) and 76 grains of Reloader 26 powder - MV = 2,874 ft/s; Drop @500 Yards = -35.8"; Drift = -9.8"; Energy@500 yards = 2,570 ft lbs; Recoil = - 34.84 Ft lbs! So, Which Would You Rather Use on North America's Biggest Game Animals? For Me, I Think the 338 WM is Just A Better Cartridge For That Purpose! Especially, If You Were Hunting Alaska and Encountered a Big Brown Bear! 🐻
