- With her comeback on the horizon, I was in the mood to talk about Rihanna. Specifically, three singles she released in the lead up to her eighth studio album, ‘Anti’. But these songs didn’t actually make it onto the album’s final track list. Why’s that???

The Anti era really deserves so much recognition due to her genre bending songs and the way she makes them work. Just can’t wait until R9.

FFS fits perfectly with higher, never ending, close to you and even kiss it better & lotb. BBHMM with pose & woo and american oxygen is in the same vibe as goodnight gotham, same old mistakes & desperado. such a bummer that they’re not on it
I agree. Would have been awesome if she added them in the deluxe version. I still find it cool that she has singles which even though they aren't part of the album, they introduced the era and are somehow connected to the album.
Anti should’ve had more singles 😩
I always said they didn’t make the album because she was waiting on that #1 smash to kick off the album. Work was a massive hit and I think the album dropped shortly after this song. The song eventually hit the top spot and stayed for a while.
I love her and I just feel like music hasn't been her main priority in the last 8- 10 yrs. In the beginning, they had her doing 1 album a year like she was BRITNEY spears and do heavy promo.. She realized she can throw a few singles out there, take a break and focus on other endeavors. There was some behind the scenes shift that came along. Maybe getting older, maybe seeing her other contemporaries career decline or maybe her heart wasn't really in the music she was releasing . Whatever she releases (or not) I still support her. Only the real ones know there were two ANTI albums. Kanye was suppose to help produce the first one, hence the Four Five Seconds lead single. Not sure what happen, maybe creative differences? Either way she canned the project and started over. That was the reason for the delay. I’m so glad she did.
Also Same Old Love was on the first ANTI album. She even tweeted the lyrics before the release. When she scrapped the project, they gave it to Selena Gomez.

@@smarcialrs nope, she recorded it (the audio leaked a few years ago). I’m just glad she didn’t scrap Kiss It Better due to the BTS drama with one of the producers.

it really feels like this anti era was something she had more control of and really enjoyed doing.
You make such great videos! You go over musical eras that are so iconic. This in between era of Rihanna is so over looked and not many people have revisited it but I really think it was a big part of her discography. I think that era was a transition for her and she became even more mature with her sound and look. Also I think this is where the shift from super star to ICON started to happen. Anti really was the album that put that final stamp on her name.

I agree wit u, the 3 singles released were great songs for anti... They even all share the common Braille font for the titles but the songs didnt have the commercial success rihanna and her label were striving for. The songs performed like later singles would after the lead single is dropped. From "loud, to TTT and unapologetic", Rihanna had number one lead single for each of those albums and in her discography 5 overall (not including anti). She knew she had to score another number one bkus most artist dont get a number one late into their era unless its viral , heavily pushed or remxed. Rihanna needed that number one hit to carry anti and "work" was it. Four five secs was good but it was no "work". I even feel if love on the brain was the lead it wuda went number one easily but work was more of a catchy song even to this day it is definitely a cultural reset. I do wish she wuda added the previous standalone singles as bonus trackz atleast. Anti cuda been so much more than what it is. The fact that it never left the bb200 charts since it got released tells u had roc nation pushed it, it definitely wuda had more top 10 hits. Its the longest running album by a black female in BB history 🎈👑 ⚓
Thanks to underrated songwriter James Fauntleroy who worked on her unapologetic album, Anti was sooooo experimental.

i don't really listen to rihanna so i didn't really notice those 3 songs werent on an album but i still listened to those songs blows me away.. plus the fact ik songs like fourfiveseconds is a fan favorite kind of shocks me. i listened to the songs again and realized how much they could have been on anti... just as confused as u i guess?? idk.. thanks for the good video and the bloopers at the end had a good laugh writing this comment

The only song out of the three that flopped was American Oxygen. FFS peaked at number 4 on the Hot 100 and is multi platinum and BBHMM peaked at number 15 and is also multi platinum.

American oxygen wasn’t received well outside of the Us. It’s seen as too patriotic
