Florida Kayak Fishing - Kayak Anchor Set up - Rock Rig / Breakaway with factory splice

- It’s not fun sticking your anchor in the rocks and not being able to retrieve it. Set it up as a Rock Rig Anchor or Breakaway Anchor. This video provides a step by step instruction set on a better way to rig your Kayak anchor system to allow as much chance as possible to get your anchor back if you happen to stick it in the rocks. While I have seen several CZcams videos outlining this setup, I have not seen any using the correct factory splice to reattach the anchor in the right position. The line that usually comes with these Grapnel anchors is Nylon and very slippery to tie a solid knot with. This factory splice will eliminate your worries about your tie in and keep the streamlined function of the original factory splice. I hope you enjoy the video and Tight Lines!

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. czcams.com/users/postUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

Its a great set up. I have saved my anchor twice since I posted this video. tight lines. Here is an update, the video uses two zip ties. I am finding that one is sufficient

I ended up putting one on as well after testing it with two and three.
I also put a ziplock with extra in the anchor pouch so I can redeploy at another location if needed.

I liked your idea and the presentation. I have a new weed anchor and will be securing it as you have shown but will use black tie straps as they are more resistant to UV than white.

Very clear instructions.
In the water, this will never work. The longer the cord is, the more elastic it gets; the ziptie will never snap.
Also, you will never have that angle (that is, the cord vertically going down to the anchor): most of the times, if not all of the times, the cord will come at a small angle, almost as an extension of the anchor shaft, which, yet again, will make snapping the ziptie impossible.
Definitely works. I’ve had to use mine before. I only use one zip tie though.

Nice DIY...On my skinny boat I'm using a weighted fluke with a foot of 1/2 Chain with a Turnbuckle...Holds reel well!!

This is the video I needed. I went kayak fishing on a windy day and the wind got worse later and made some pretty big waves. I was using the same anchor but I only tie it on the one end and the anchor got stuck. It was a very scary moment because my kayak was stuck sideways against the direction of the wave and at any moment a big wave can flip the kayak. I almost had to cut the line but manage to pull the anchor out. Never again.

wonderful ... I would suggest that you use a single 3.6mm cable tights instead of two. I couldn't break these two cable tights arranged sequentially when I am on the kayak and the anchor is stuck on underwater branches . Never the less I truly enjoyed your tutorial . Thank you !

I learned how to do eye splices on line in the Navy, but wouldn't a well-tied bowline knot work just as well for attaching the line to the anchor? Bowlines don't slip and can be untied if needed instead of cut like a splice would need to be.

I don’t use a chain anchor. I am 100% saltwater, so I am always in tides and current, I would need a whole lot of chain to keep me in one place. Thanks for the comment and tight lines!
What was the brand of the anchor combo?
Just got the same anchor and was scratching my head at why it comes from the factory attached to the wrong end! Another problem I noticed is I will have to move the float so that I can use my anchor trolley. How do you handle your anchor and rope while in the Vibe? Debating on getting a retractable clothesline or something similar for mine.
Thanks for the comment and tight lines. I don’t have a good answer for you. I just clip my anchor by the transducer scupper and pile the line in front of the rudder peddles. I use a home made trolly that only goes from mid to rear on one side. I did a vid on my vibe... it’s on my channel somewhere which shows my trolly. Check it out if you care to

The rope in the scuba reel is plenty strong for this anchor.
Just coil it below the float and make sure it is secured at that length and can't accidentally let line out. Several ways to do that. A reel is the simplest.
Don’t know if you’ll read this but does the anchor spin on the way up then causes the rope to also get knotted/unraveled or does it not affect the rope?
Thanks for the comment! Anchor spins a little, but No real effect on the line at all. An update since making this video- I have found using only one zip tie works just fine, instead of the two I show in the vid. I have saved my anchor a dozen times since using this method.

Why a Buoy own anchor i'm new to this
I like your idea. If I were fishing, and trying to hold a position, I could see how the alternate line location could ease retrieving your anchor if stuck. That said, this could be potentially dangerous if you were to count on, or rely on the anchor holding under load. Being blown out to sea, or being taken by a current, or whatever reason you may come up with that necessitated NEEDING your anchor to hold, this system would defeat the purpose. One big or significant jarring of the anchor line would trip the zip-tie, and the load would cause the anchor to release. Then, about the only thing holding you wherever you want to be held, is a 3.5’ anchor traveling backwards, with zero holding power.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE ZIP TIES AFTER THEY BREAK FREE OF THE ANCHOR? I HAVE HEARD THAT BROOK TROUT ADORE THE TASTE!!! SERIOUSLY, USE 8 LB MONOFILAMENT- BREAKS EASIER AND IT STAYS WITH THE ANCHOR SYSTEM....THANKS, EAGLE-SAN

It does not have to be, it just looks nicer.
Use black zip ties, they have U.V. protection.

use seweing strings instead of zip ties...try not to pollute the sea more than it is...
by they way...it's better to use a 3 ft. chain at the anchor instead of nylon rope, rocks and reef are extremely sharp and jagged

The top eyelet is for a separate "trip line" which is attached to a float. If the anchor is fouled (snagged in your words) that's what the trip line is for. I roll my eyes at all you people who think the factory rig the anchor wrong.
Whats the point in a separate line though? Why not just attach to the grapple end and be done? Why attach a line to the top of the anchor at all?
More than 8 minutes of this video is how to thread the excess line back into the main line. Why not just tie an overhand loop which would take 30 seconds?
I live in Tampa area. When fishing intercostal here no one I know used a grappling anchor. It DESTROYS the ENVIRONMENT. Instead use a mushroom anchor. Sure, you may drift a little but you can retrieve it when snagged VERY easily and you do no harm.
If you are a Kayaker and care about the environment especially where there are sea grasses etc then please do not use such equipment.
And let the cable ties littered in the waters? .. Nah... Not a good tip. No thanks.
