  • Part 1 of how to set up an anchor system on your fishing kayak. This video looks specifically at the Anchor Trolley System - an essential part of safely anchoring your kayak.
    I take a look at why you need an anchor trolley to ensure you can safely fish at anchor, as well as what exactly an anchor trolley is and the components needed to make one. I also run through how i have set up an Anchor Trolley system on my Hobie Outback kayak.
    A must-watch if you are new to kayak fishing and plan on anchoring your kayak!

    This is the most useful and in depth series of kayak videos I've found after countless hours trawling youtube. Personally I'd find any tips on which knots to use tying the line to the rings helpful as well. I know how time consuming making this content is so your efforts are greatly appreciated. Thanks and looking forward to the next.

    Great informative video on the anchor trolley system. Really interested in how you turn it in to a boat based tow. My only concern would be that as it is you are not able to quickly release it in an emergency like most boat/waste tows.

    • @CornishKayakAngler
      @CornishKayakAngler  Před 4 lety +4

      James Armstrong thanks James. The towline aspect is very much designed to be an emergency back up if you had no other rope to use. I always carry a super sharp rope cutter (Beaver Trigger Line Cutter) attached to my PFD so if I ever needed to quickly disconnect from a tow then I would just cut the anchor trolley line!

  • @markmay184
    @markmay184 Před 2 lety

    Great vid, and I’m going to incorporate your S/S rings/carabiner anchor/tow/safety system into mine - ingenious 👍🏻. About the only drawback I could see with your system is the use of the bungee cord on the bow pulley. Bungee is notorious for parting (snapping) just when you don’t want it to, unless you replace it (regularly) even then there’s no guarantee. It could get a bit messy if the front pulley was to suddenly let go whilst at anchor in a strong tidal stream/current/wind etc. I don’t have a shock absorber incorporated into my system, but note the advantages of having one. There are any amount of power boat anchor/mooring systems on the market that incorporate a shock absorber into their systems. Usually a H/D rubber bungee strap of some description is attached. A bight (10” or so) is formed in the anchor/mooring line and the bungee ends are shackled to the line (the size of the bight is the amount/length of shock absorption). If the bungee parts, the anchor/mooring line is not comprised. The vessel simply remains at anchor/mooring buoy, riding on the anchor line. Just need to “downsize” that lot 😀

    • @CornishKayakAngler
      @CornishKayakAngler  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks Mark! The bungee doesn’t have too much load on it, it just buffers a few inches of surface movement so doesn’t really get stretched enough to risk snapping. I’ve never had or heard of it snapping as part of an anchor trolley system anyway but it’s always a possibility. It would be easy enough to run a short length of slack cord from the pulley to the pad eye as a fall back, just as the example you mention with the boat mooring shock absorbers.

    • @CornishKayakAngler
      @CornishKayakAngler  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Thanks! It depends what you are towing but yes it feels heavier peddling whilst towing someone for sure. You probably lose about 1/3 of your cruising speed but it may help you get someone or yourself out of trouble. I have used it a couple of times to help friends on the water. One lost their paddle, one broke their pedal drive.

    • @CornishKayakAngler
      @CornishKayakAngler  Před 2 lety +1

      The issue you would have is when the cord stretches a bit overtime, the anchor trolley would slacken and your only way to reel tension would be to undo one of the knots and tie it in a bit tighter. Having bungee keeps tight to the kayak and if the cord gives a bit the bungee takes up the slack

    Great video and greetings from Mexico, I have a question, is there a deep limit water to use an anchor in a kayak? I ask this, because I fishing in a dam where the deeper point could be 80 meters below, thanks in advance,

    • @CornishKayakAngler
      @CornishKayakAngler  Před 2 lety +1

      The deeper you go the heavier anchor you tend to need and the more anchor line you will need to let out so the anchor will hold properly. If there is current / tide then you’ll likely need to set an anchor off a big buoy. I have anchored in 140m for Giant Skate and use a 5kg Bruce with 5m of chain (10kg combined weight) and a big buoy to set it off, with a floating lazy line off the buoy to clip up to. This works well if fishing the area for a few days as it saves hauling the anchor each day - not easy in deep water! This set up is used where there is a fair bit of tide so the heavy anchor / chain is required. In 80m you might get away with a 5kg anchor/chain combo if there is no or little current. Hope this helps!

    Really enjoy your videos and would like your input on the recommended length for a Tow Rope, generally 15m is put forward where the Trolley Line will only give you around 3m depending on the size of your Kayak, in your experience is the Trolley length sufficient, I’m specifically thinking about use in the Ocean?

    • @CornishKayakAngler
      @CornishKayakAngler  Před 3 lety

      Thanks Sebastian. A longer tow line certainly creates a smoother tow with less jolting especially if you have to cover some distance or it is choppy. A 10 or 15m towline is typically used by sea kayakers for such use, whereas a 3m towline is sufficient as a short tow in quick rescue scenarios. Whilst not so great for towing over longer distances it will do the job albeit a touch less efficiently than a longer line. The bonus of incorporating within the anchor trolley is less gear and less weight to take on the kayak. Downside is that it is only a short tow and it is not quick release. Take a look at the Palm Ocean Pro for a dedicated waist mounted quick release towline for sea use

      @CornishKayakAngler  Před 2 lety +1

      Usually you would just install on one side of the kayak, but some like to have it on both sides. I don’t see the need personally although some people like to deploy a small drogue off the bow whilst at anchor to help them sit straight in the tide, particularly if it’s windy. In this instance the drogue could be deployed on one anchor trolley and the anchor set with the other.

    Hey man, got a question regarding the parrel bead which has the bungee running through it at the bow. What size is it and how did you manage to run both ends of the bungee through the hole and tie it off? Is it the same size as the ones attached to the carabiner?

    • @CornishKayakAngler
      @CornishKayakAngler  Před rokem

      The bead is about 20mm in diameter. It’s the same as the ones by the karabiner. The hole through the middle of the parrell bead is approx 6mm but I managed to get 5mm bungee doubled up through it. The trick is to use some fishing line. Make a loop in the line and pass this through, then poke the bungee through this loop to the halfway mark on the bungee. Then pull the line and force the bungee through the hole. This will leave a loop of bungee one side of the bead and then you’ll just have to tie a knot on the other side to prevent it pulling through. Hope this makes sense!

    Is all para cord pretty much the same size? I was just wondering that if I wanted to purchase different colors of para cord if they would fit through the pulleys of the anchor trolley kit.

    • @CornishKayakAngler

      You can usually find cord in various colours if you want to colour match your kayak. Just look for 5mm or 6mm / 1/4in cord

    Finally got around to upgrading my trolley system and have a couple of questions, what rivet gun are you using that can get inside a zigzag cleat, or is there a trick to it. The other question is, if you are using the system to tow someone, do you tow against the bungee cord or lock off the cord against the cleat?

    • @CornishKayakAngler
      @CornishKayakAngler  Před 3 lety

      I used what I would describe as a standard pop rivet gun, the cheap type from a hardware store. The nozzle is a tight fit between the teeth of the cleat - you have to apply some pressure and force it in between them! There is also a trick where you build up a number of small washers on the stem of the rivet until the nozzle can force against them to compress the rivet without needing to get in between the teeth of the cleat if that makes sense. With regards to towing, I usually allow the bungee to take out some of the jolting motion so don’t bother cleating the tow system off, although on smooth water it wouldn’t make too much difference. Hope that helps!

      @@CornishKayakAngler I found one that works, as you said, it was the cheapest one the shop had, my normal gun just looked at it and said “no”, hadn’t thought of the washers but will remember it for the future. Thanks for the feedback back on the towing, much appreciated.

    Hi mate, quick question. Is it ok to fix the zig zag cleat in front of your seat? Rather than behind? I like the idea of using washers and nuts to fix the cleat but only have access inside my kayak via the front hatch on the viking Reload. I find it strange viking kayaks dont have brass inserts for the cleat.
    Cheers

    • @CornishKayakAngler
      @CornishKayakAngler  Před 3 lety +1

      You can fit it in front of the seat but don’t have it in a position where your hands will catch it whilst paddling. As far as I can tell using a zig zag cleat is common in the UK but less so elsewhere in the world, probably why Viking don’t have inserts for them. Trifold rivets are more than strong enough for the cleat if you can’t use bolts, never had one fail 💪🏻

      Thanks for the comment Jarno! No the cleat has not damaged the kayak in anyway. It has remained firmly attached to the kayak since I fitted it. You could use rigging bullets but you would need to have a backing plate with the threaded holes the right separation for the pad eyes and cleat. Have fun with the Outback, they are a great kayak 😎
