Beautiful, professional looking and strong, what's not to like?!
I made a keel guard for my Max 10 using old school fiberglass mat. Doesn't look so great but its super strong and will never come off. If I had to do it again however, I'm doing your version, looks better and easier to install.
Thanks Homestead! I may just pin this post!
Looks good. Researching "kevlar skid plates" for my canoe. Might go this route instead.
Thanks for sharing, Daren! I ordered 4 sheets of Kydex (extras for mistakes) and marine grade Goop. I bought my first fishing kayak over the weekend, and I want to get the keel guards on sooner rather than later.
Good stuff brother! Have fun!
I am glad you made this tutorial. I followed your instructions andmade a very nice keel guard for my hobie lynx. Thank you So much!
Glad it helped!
I just got my Kydex in the mail (purchased from your link) and so this weekend I will working on the keel guards. Thanks for the video. 👍
Heck Yeah! After fishing I'm assuming :)
Great video! Thanks so much for your channel!
Right on Brian! Glad it was helpful!
Hey nice job...I have the mode 110...pelican...I used spay in bed liner took painter tape taped off area....works great ...have a great day
I really appreciate all these videos you have made. just dipping my toes into the hobby and you are my go to for recommendations.
Glad to help!
just got the goop in the mail looking forward to finishing my keel guard today thanks for the great idea!!
Heck Yeah Branden! Let me know how it turns out!
So your I have to say I used a lot more goop than I thought I would. bending the kydex was harder than I thought but waiting for it all to dry and cure thanks again and your channel is awesome you have a new sub!
@@Bmuth712 Heck yeah... should las you for a long time. Thanks for the sub
Very informative, thanks 👍
Right on Adam.. happy to help
I bought your video and just watched some Kydex from Scamazon. I don't drag my yak b/c it's fairly light plus I just bought new wheels for my car.
I was kinda new to old stuff but really like this news video for old times sake. Plus after the divorce my dad said don't trust my mom while my mom said trust your dad at your own demise. I'm 50% of both so I'm now at 0% of trust in self.
With this knowledge of being 100% of zero, I thought I'd drown myself in the water until seeing your video. I have since bought a kayak just to make a couple'a keel guards. Now I've decided that I'll die on the water and not in it! You'da You'da best!
Update: I am now a raisin of a man, all dried up under the sun, being pecked apart by birds while laying lame on an unsinkable kayak. I would've rather been fish food. If only my keel had some leakage, if only.....
Bless your heart
"The Duck Tape lol" Darren i love your DIY vids. Epic add-on, and a must have, especially with the $$ we invest in our one man kayaks today.. 💯 🌊 🎣
Thanks Anthony! Appreciate it.. yeah.. for $20 you can't beat it. Just saying kayak accessory will cost you $20 nowadays
I've been aware of this for years and it's time to try one. I'm not as dainty with my kayak especially coming into the launch. Have worn through 2 layers of Gator guard. Like the goop idea over using the tape. Thanks.
Right on Greg... The goop is by far easier and faster to apply. Good luck.
Great job. If I were doing this, I would have made a fish silhouette.
Thanks for the tutorial.🐟
Ha! Love it
ayo just in time! this morning I watched your video and made mine that way! I work as a sculptor so I used plaster to make a negative, and a positive. melted it to the exact shape of the hull. I can handoff the keel guard to others. !
Now that's awesome... thanks for sharing Michael!
I am notorious for running aground, up onto boar ramp and just over crap in my oldtown pdl120. I really need to put a gaurd on it. Thanks for the tips
No problem Will. Happy to help
One Objective has a awesome keel guard. I used it for years on my SS127, and now I have one on my P127. Be careful because 303 breaks down adhesives over time. Great video, thanks for sharing!
Right on Illuminathan! Thanks for the tip
Just completed mine using your system good sir. Just waiting for the goop to dry! Think ill take the yak out for the first day of the year this weekend.
Right on!
Great job, looks great! I need to add a couple on my kayak. Today, my Hobie PA14 slid out of my trailer on the highway, it slide out when the light turned green, so it wasn't like I was going 50+mph, but it slapped the ground on the aft keel; I forgot to strap it down. Thankfully nothing serious, just some scratches. So my plan is to add some guards on the front and back. Thanks for the great video!
That sucks but I am glad you were cruising down the highway!
Thanks for another great video. I’m going to do the same. The only 2 things that I will do different are lightly trace the cut and molded piece onto the kayak and smear a thin layer of the goop on the kayak itself just to ensure the best possible adhesion.
Right on Fabian.. let me know how it works for ya!
Do you mind updating on how good the Goop held up?
Thank you
No issues to date!
That's good work, brother! 👊 v1 or v2! I've used the same kydex holster for over 10 years years on my Glock 26 that I EDC and I do hit it on stuff all the time - tough stuff that gets a few scratches, but has never shown any cracks or breaks.
Heck yeah!
I've bought everything to do this with, but been procrastinating about cutting it. Memorial day trip fast approaching!
Good luck!
I'm going to have some time now. So Project Cheap Bass is gonna get one of these.
Hey... it's best to have extra time during fishing season right? Praying you will find something soon
I watched your old video on it, and just found this one, I WILL be doing this on mine, also what is the wheels you have on your old kayak?, I have been trying to find some for mine
Hey ITB, The wheel system I have are Native Sidekicks... they are pricey... but one of those things I use ALL THE TIME! Beats the crap out of a kayak cart.
I've watched countless videos like you have and this is by far the way to go. I bought my first fishing kayak last year and after taking it out just one time I learned quick, need a keel guard lol... Is there a preferred thickness for the kydex?for the videos
Hey Jason, 0.080" Thick is what I was using. You can get it here if you like: geni.us/Kydex
Just did one on my Jackson Bite FD. Had a couple of hot spots from dragging it in the river. Will see how it holds up.
Right on brother... Let me know how the river treats it
Excellent! Simple, strong and looks like it came on the yak. What grit sand paper do you recommend to rough up the surface, about 200?
TBH, it's been a while and I don't remember the grit
Hi
Fantastic video!! Thank you for showing us a great way to protect our Kayak! I do have a question though!
On my kayak I had put two coats of black bedliner coating on my keel. I was wondering, could I get some Kydex and follow your video with every step. Could I put the Kydex right over the coating that I put down underneath it with the Kydex overlapping the coating I put on? Thank you!
Great question... and I really don't know an answer on that one. Sorry boss
Great video. Thank you.
What do you think about carbon felt + epoxy? Will it be as durable as Jude’s?
I will be honest with you. Since i don't have any type of experience with it. I really can't comment on it.
I used the 6”X 18” Gator Patch on mine… your method is awesome… but either way it will save your yak. We spend a lot of money on our yaks… so a little more protection never hurt… speaking on behalf of a former 19 year old new father
Amen to that Ray!
Love the videos! My only request to improve your content is to normalize or lower volume on machines when using them. Like during the orbital sander in this one. Otherwise I'm looking forward to doing this new keelguard when I get my kayak. Thanks for your content!
Thanks for the feedback Jage. You always have to reserve the right to get better so I appreciate you sharing. You wouldn't have if you didn't care. Let me know how that keel guard comes out.
Wendel, I have the SS127 , Two years in and I've noticed this keel guard would be a nice addition . I'm VERY rough on my equipment and I believe this type of guard would also serve well on the front area of the pontoon sections because they too take some major abuse. I was wondering if you had considered this as well and how you might approach the install? Love DIY . Great channel love your breakdowns. 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🇺🇲🇺🇲
100 percent boss. I've done it to both sides of my Native Slayer.. works like a boss
Love the update. I can't wait to do this when I get my kayak.
Right on Jesse! Hopefully that is soon
Thank-you: Derek you did the research and I saw that the first one did take a beating and led to a crack. Why not use PVC instead of the Kydex? My kayak will sit in a sub zero garage over winter. I found 3mm sheets, about 25% thicker, too thick?
Hey Mike, Kydex is stronger than PVC.. you could definitely go thicker on the kydex. It's pretty malleable
Followed your 2 Kydex keel guard videos to do my yak. Went like a charm. Did the thermoform twice, just to get a little better of a fit. Thanks for the info.
HECK YEAH Thomas! Thanks for letting me know. Glad it worked out for you. Now you can drag your kayak down the boat ramp grater with not a worry in the world!
Hi, thank you-may I ask what thickness you used for the kydex sheet? Thanks!
Yup.. no problem.. here's the link of the one I used. You can get thicker for sure if beat it up really good.
@@wendellfishing oh, thanks. I didn't see the link though. I was thinking about going w the. 08" one.

Appreciate it Bushman
Yo I just bought a kayak and I'm planing on doing the kydex keel guard I was just wondering what application do you think works best the marine goop or the 60 lb gorilla tape with a sealer?
Goop!
Great idea, how is it holding up?
Full season and no problem. The 1.0 Verson has been going for 2 seasons with no issue
What are your thoughts on just using a spray on bed liner for a keel guard? Or a combination of both the kydex and goop then spray the bed liner over the kydex ?
IMO the bed liner will just scratch off
How will you remove them when it comes time to replace thos one? Is Marine Goop easy to with after it's cured?
Hey Boss, here's some chems that will dissolve goop: Chevron solvent 1100
Chlorothane NU
Cyclohexane
Gasoline
Perchloroethylene
Propyl acetate
Toluene
Once you used the goop, did it stay , or did you use the heat gun again for it to mold onto the keel?
Once I used the goop.. it cured in 24 hours. No need to use the heat gun again!
Hello! I have a fibreglass kayak and am wondering can I do this method? Will the heat gun mess up with the fibreglass in my yak?
I couldn't answer that for you. Never tried
Great video, and great timing! I used your first video for inspiration for mine, got it done in a couple hours about a week ago. I also used Kydex, but used JB Weld ClearWeld to adhere to the hull. Haven't tested it yet, because the NorCal rain just won't stop, but soon.
Right on.. that stuff is solid... you will be good to go!
@@wendellfishing just found this video again - looking for a new solution. The JB Weld failed, haha. I think it doesn't like saltwater, and didn't bond that well to HDPE. No big, at least my keel guard pieces are still shaped just right, gonna try the Marine GOOP you used. How yours holding up?
No issues with the marine goop after a season of beating it up! @@kevinsteineke7454
@@wendellfishingsweet gonna try that this time. Thanks!
This may be silly question...with that kydex gaurd on solid...if the kydex gets holes over time, will it still protect kayak from holes?? I think it would but with my luck, i would spring a leak and have to try to get kydex off...
Im just debating doing kydex or welding on extra plastic as gaurd. My current kayak is mod-ed to bone so dont want to give er up! But she has hole on spot that your video is showing.
Thanks for taking time to do these videos!! Great job.
The kydex could be removed if needed. There are some chems out there that will help.
Perfect. Im going to make a set. I looked up a keel guard for my moken 12.5, it was almost 60 bucks and people in the reviews hated it.
The scratches i already have on my kayak just mean better adhesion, right? 😂
Makes sense to me!!
I've had my P127 for two years. I'm finally getting around to installing the keel guard. I've noticed that the two smaller keels that are further back are getting beat up more than the center one. Have you noticed this with yours? Have you considered covering those at some point?
I haven't noticed this at all with mine.. but the stern of my yak rarely ever touches anything because of my sidekicks.
How long did you let the goop dry for before use? Thanks ahead of time.
24 hours
Hey I noticed that they have thicker Kydex like 0.093" Would I be better off around my area i have nothing but rocks where I launch and the bottom of my yak is taking a beating
Makes sense to me!
Did the goop on the keel guard held up good ? There is lot of debate on goop with kayaks..Thanks...
1 full season with no issue
Hey bud, just got my kayak and was planning on doing the same, but I planned on doing the entire bottom side,
+ keel, I noticed you just did strips on the keel is there a reason you didn't do the entirety of the bottom where it'd get dragged and scraped against stuff?
I don't really drag and scrape my kayak as I have native sidekicks. That's why I just did the keel. It what get's the most abuse when I am entering and exiting the water.
I have a Coleman canoe made out of that HDPE and nothing bonds to it. I have plastic welded cracks where the plastic has worn thin due to dragging (It's a duck hunting canoe) this would work great to gaurd the cracks. Did the goop keep it on? I'd be worried it would get knocked off.
Goop has held up like a boss so far and I beat the tar out of it.
Thank you for this video, and when the KYDEX is damaged and I have to change it, is it easy to remove it with that direct glue? I just finished making my Keel molds thanks to your video but now I don't know whether to use double contact tape or direct glue...
There are some chemicals that will take off the glue.. it's a pressure hold so I imagine you could pop it off with enough force
@@wendellfishing Thanks for answering, what about the heat gun, do you think i will be able to remove it by using that tool?
I have never needed to do it so I unfortunately can't answer on this@@edgarvilmanyi3948
@@wendellfishing I already managed to glue my kayak keel directly with the glue you recommend, definitely better than with double contact tape, thanks for the recommendation...
What thickness Kydex do you recommend? If I missed it in your video, my apologies. Very good demonstration, editing and your choice and limited use of music is appreciated.
I got you: geni.us/Kydex You could go thicker if you wanted. Thanks on the comment. I try to create videos with no fluff... high value.

@@mplsmark222 No problem brother
Thoughts on using .06” v.s. .08” thick KYDEX? Would the .06” provide sufficient durability? Easier to heat/form? Less of a protruding edge to improve water resistance?
I think you get the same result with the .08 holding up longer. May be more difficult to mold but should not be an issue
Hey man, great video. I noticed you posted this a yr ago. So, how has it held up? Either way, im going with it. What they charging for "keel guard tape" is ridiculous.
Haven’t thought a second about it since I put it on.. still holding and protecting like a boss

Holding up like a boss after beating the crap out of it. I did both methods and they are both holding up great. No issues since I adhered them. czcams.com/video/gWgDEaZalbk/video.html
@@wendellfishing also meant to ask why you chose the shape you did for the kydex? Does it matter?
That shape allowed me to curve it around the curve of the yak without bunching up the kydex @@buckeye830
On the instructions on the back of the package it says "not recommended to be used on polyethylene, and several other plastics. I have my kydex formed and the marine glue ready. Any issues you have had or heard about on kayaks? Just wondering.
Hey Ron, to my understanding, and I found this online is "There are no glues that glue polyethylene, nothing on the market makes a chemical bond. So, your left with products that fill gaps, and provide a compression seal, which is what you will be doing. Goop and 3m's 5200 do a good job at this. But keep in mind, that they do not actually glue to the poly, so timely inspections and occasional maintenance need to be done.

I have no idea why the instructions recommend not using this goop on polyethylene ?
It seems to hold up well

It's not recommended because they say that it sticks, but it does not create a chemical bond, as such it is subject to releasing it's grip. This generally happens a little bit over time. But two seasons with no issue so far.

@@JamesRichardson-wr1me I think it's negligible. Could end up getting a better adhesion.
I think in your first video you used two sided tape. It appeared that it was easy to remove years later if you wanted to replace the kydex. Do you think this version with the goop will be easy to remove if you need to replace your guard?
I used the 60 lbs gorilla tape on my river kayak last year and it’s holding up great. I recently bought a new old town pdl. I’m going to put a kydex keel gaurd on the front and back. Not sure how I want to apply it yet. I have the same question as TwoBuck Chuck. I’m wondering which one will be easier to replace down the road. Scraping double sided tape off, or trying to removing marine goop. both will be a small job but with the right tools I’m sure both can be done fairly easy. I’ve seen and read about countless people applying keel guards both ways. Ive done my own research but haven’t found anything to sway me one way or the other. Wendal was there a reason you switched up your adhesive process on the keel gaurd install?
Hey TwoBuck Chuck.... According to GOOP Central (1-800-693-GOOP or 1-800-767-GOOP), there are three recommended solvents for GOOP. They are acetone, toluene and naphtha. Acetone will do a good job on GOOP that has not fully set. Toluene is a more powerful solvent that will remove fully set GOOP.

Why don't kayak manufacturers use protective material on the keels to begin with? They charge a fortune for kayaks, we might as well get an optimized product. Kind of frustrating. Great video and advice. I wish it wasn't necessary.
I agree 100%... No reason there isn't some type of indestructible material on the keel. Something like a snap on keel guard in the design is something I have said for years.

Any solutions if you don’t have a heat gun?
The only other thing I could think of is a Hair Dryer to soften the Kydex. The problem is that Hair Dryers heat between 80 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Optimum Kydex molding begins at 330 - 350°F. People will soften the kydex in ovens and then form but there are all kinds of problems I see doing that.
Get a toaster oven from a thrift.
Used one for holster making and the slower, even heating makes Kydex very easy to work with.
Properly heated it is like wet leather👍🏻
There’s also the plumber’s trick of a bucket or can of hot sand, you can put over a campstove or portable burner.
Basic is that you don’t want these fumes anywhere near food, so stay out of the kitchen😂

How someone can think tape, or something like Flex Seal (I've seen people use that) will hold up to even the lightest abuse is baffling.
Mine is starting to get a little beat up after using it very regularly last year. I need to do this. I also want to cover up the wheel skeg it has with a solid piece. I think this will do nicely for that.
