It’s a common misconception that stomach ulcers are caused by emotional upset, psychological distress, or spicy food. Yet no convincing study has ever demonstrated that these factors directly cause ulcer disease. So what does cause stomach ulcers? Rusha Modi explains how one doctor’s famous (and dangerous) experiment led us to the answer.

@@Ms.Emerald that's happening to me. I'm now doing intermittent fasting and explained it really well but they said I might end up in hospital. How do I convince them that IF are not from getting ulcers?
I almost died at 17 after having multiple ulcers since the age of 11. Many doctors I saw did not believe that I had ulcers, they thought it was caused by emotions. It wasnt until after they did scopes that they realized I was not just "emotional".
What treatment you went through?
11 to 17 is pretty young to be having multiple ulcers. I can't blame them *too* much since you weren't in the usual target demographic for such a condition.
It's similar to what happened to me when I was teenager: I had gallstones. Doctors were convinced I was having appendicitis, but one nurse suggested gallstones due to the fact I kept pointing to a certain area on my abdomen on where my pain was. It turned out she was right, so I avoided an unnecessary surgery. The Doctors explained the reason they were hesitant to even suggest it was because of my age. Most cases happen in your middle ages, not your teenage years.

I can’t stand it when people say spicy food causes ulcers
It does not but it causes your ulcer to swell. So you still need to avoid it when you have ulcer. If you're healthy then go for it.
WarioGiant Dealing with arrogant Dr's cause ulcers
WarioGiant
Spicy food doesn’t cause ulcers. However, if you have ulcers in your G.I. tract, spicy food can irritate those ulcers. This causes pain and discomfort. Do you understand the difference?
Are you all saying spicy foods can't develop gastritis as well? Because you can get ulcers from gastritis... And I have gastritis with no h. Pylori so then wtf if it's not stress, smoking or food
Moses K
Your gastritis could be caused by something else. Gastritis = inflammation or infection in the stomach/G.I. tract. Other causes of gastritis include adverse effects of certain medications, drinking alcohol, smoking weed (especially synthetic marijuana), also other health ailments/diseases. Diabetes is a big culprit. How is your blood sugar?
The moment I read the title of this video I was hoping that it would talk about H. Pylori, and I felt vindicated when it did. I was diagnosed with H. Pylori in high school. For years before that I have chronic stomach pain and nausea, but every time I went to my doctor she said it was because of stress and anxiety. I was surprised when a new doctor told me my symptoms may be caused by a bacteria that eats away at your stomach lining, allowing acid to hurt your stomach. I took antibiotics that killed the bacteria, and my stomach slowly healed. I still have stomach issues, but they’re much less frequent.
I do wish this video described *how* H. Pylori causes stomach ulcers. And that it didn’t dismiss that stress and anxiety do cause stomach pain and nausea. Stomach issues are a stress response, and prolonged toxic stress weakens your immune system and allows bacteria to hurt your body. But it is a huge problem that many symptoms are dismissed by doctors as being due to stress, when they could be caused by a number of physical problems.
What's the name of the antibiotics please? 🙏
@@divine2310 It was years ago so I don't remember the exact antibiotics, but I think it was a tripe therapy including amoxicillin. I looked up treatments and it seems triple therapy has become less effective due to antibiotic resistant H. pylori strains. There are other antibiotic treatments that are being tested. The most effective includes taking probiotics. If you think you have an infection, ask your doctor to be tested, and discuss the options you have. I hope you get effective treatment!
I had h-pylori twice in my lifetime (am only 27 years old) and it’s sooo painful 😣 I also had an ulcer once due to h-pylori and trust me it’s not that fun. However, am forever thankful to this doctor’s contribution to science 🙏 without it I might’ve had to go through surgery 🙃

I remember my late grandfather who died in the 90s, the poor man suffered from chronic ulcers. I remember asking what caused them, and family members would say ‘we don’t know, doctors say anything can cause uclers, like too much acid, but there’s no cure and no known cause’. I’m so glad we finally found the culprit!
I need to show this to my Doctor. and maybe ask him where did he got his education
I think the fact that you blindly trust a TED talk video over your doctor probably says a lot more about you (and likely most of our country) than it does about your doctor's education. While some stomach ulcers are caused by H. pylori (the bacteria), most are in fact caused by our diet (food, coffee, alcohol) and worsened with obesity, eating large meals late at night etc. There is certainly some benefit to getting tested for H. pylori, but its not cheap and its not like a strep throat swab. Additionally the treatment is for multiple weeks and is not 100% effective. While you may not want to hear it, just having heartburn is not an indication to be tested for H. pylori, for all the reasons I have mentioned. But by all means, rant on the interwebz about how you're smarter than youre doctor after watching a 5 minute video.
True that. I should have said "post"

I had gastritis a few years ago--actually, about the same time as this video was made. That was the worst month of my life. Not because I was in pain, since the pain went away rather quickly after I started taking antibiotics, but because when you have an ulcer, there is so much food that you can't eat. Wow that was so informative... Can't believe the stress and food notions are still so prevalent. I had an ulcer for the first time recently and now I understand the correlation between the first time trying Tylenol as well.
I had stomach ulcer about 17 years ago, and my doctor keep prescribed me with stomach acid suppression whenever symptoms reappearing (every 6 months or so), and I had that going for years. Until one day I meet a new doctor, she suggested it might be a bacterial infection and wanted me to do a test, sure enough, the test showed positive for bacterial infection, then I got the antibiotics, after a week I was fully cured, haven't had the ulcers ever since.

What a HERO. I read an article about Barry Marshall a long time ago (probably around when he won the Nobel) but it was verrry complicated, but I was also really young. All I took away from it was that he was a hero and stress does NOT cause ulcers. When I would tell people the stress cause was a myth, they'd be like "Then what does?!" I wasn't able to fully explain it because the way i learned about it was always too complex....until now! I'm glad I can honor Marshall's work and can help dispel this rumor in my everyday life. :)
I was a heavy drinker and had stomach pain at night after dinner and lasted from 10pm till 9-10 in clock in the morning. I fixed my diet and ate around 4 , took probiotics and quit alcohol all together. It took me a good 6 months for it to disappear all together. I slowly saw the pain come back less severe than before and eventually but went away. I haven’t had stomach pain for a year and alcohol is not worth that pain Al all.

I still think that ulcers can be caused by stress due to the fact that stress can effect our immune systems and can allow bad bacteria into our bodies.

So true! Living proof here ☝
True. I had ulcer, since then I often got advise from my family to stop my coffee and soft drink habits. The stubborn me wouldn't care at all... I even mix coffee and energy drink...🤣
They basically said that. 50% of people have H.Pylori in their stomach but only some of them get ulcers. It seems like smoking, severe stress and many other things can weaken the body's defences, allowing the infection to overrun the protections in the stomach and create an ulcer. However, without the bacteria in the first place, this wouldn't happen.
The treatment is very simple - a week or so treatment with acid reducers and antibiotics. Way better than surgery (which was the final state treatment option before the bacteria was identified as the cause).

"Fun fact": Stress may be related to ulcers because it usually affects our immunologic system and a inflamatory response. With a weaker immune defense, bacterias (and other organisms) that are usually "harmless" or easily defeated can turn out as a big problem. Of course, it doesn't mean that if you arent stressed you will not get ulcers, or if you are stressed you will get ulcers, but stress may be related to that problem.
