  • You may have heard that you should be pooping once a day -- but that's a load of crap, says Dr. Jen Gunter. From the enzymes in your mouth to the nutrient-absorbing power of your large intestine, she journeys through the digestive tract to explain why it's okay to poop at your own pace -- and shares the many regulating benefits of a fiber-rich diet.
    Think you know how your body works? Think again! Dr. Jen Gunter is here to shake up everything you thought you knew -- from how much water you need to drink to how often you need to poop and everything in between. This TED original series will tell you the truth about what's really going on inside you.

      I think you may have misheard? You don't feel the urge when your brain thinks it's acceptable. You feel the urge whenever your body is ready. That gets registered by the brain, and if you think it's socially acceptable, then you do it.

      That's part of the end card, which is up to the channel to add, although it might affect your chances of success of your channel doesn't add it.
      Some channels have a specific outro with a coloured background and snazzy music for those 10s it so, but since these videos are only about 5min long, that might be unfeasible.
      Regardless, the presenter was merely listing a bunch of food high in fiber, so there isn't even a need to watch at that point.

    • @wecare838
      @wecare838 Před 3 lety +36

      Yes. Also they are heavily promoting "shorts" nowadays, to ride on the TikTok craze, and one of the creator I follow said, its forced in many ways; unless they make those shorts, their videos are less likely to be recommended in CZcams. Hurts the free flowing nature of the platform.

    • @deus_ex_machina_
      @deus_ex_machina_ Před 2 lety +5

      @@SharonLougheed I use uBO as well, but don't block the end cards since they're often useful.
      For example, if the video I'm watching is part of a playlist, then the channel can suggest that at the end. If it's part of a series that's best watched in order, then the channel can call that out at the start by using 'cards' to link to previous videos in the series, and at the end suggest the next video.
      Also, if a channel uses those fancy outros I mentioned with slick animations, and the avatar and suggestions don't appear, then it bothers my aesthetic sensibilities.
      Regardless, I'm glad that people are using the element blocking tool, my common use for them is to banish GDPR cookie consent banners without having to accept cookies.

    • @SharonLougheed
      @SharonLougheed Před 2 lety +2

      @@deus_ex_machina_ That's fair. Yes, some videos have empty spaces where an end card would be, and usually I'll just go to a channel directly (or look at the suggestions/description) to the see the next video in a series. Unfortunately, I have seen a *lot* of creators misuse the placement of end cards, covering up parts of a video. I put up with it for months before making the filter. lol I really wish we had a way to temporarily turn them off like annotations used to.
      Oh blocking cookie consent banners is a good tip! For some reason I didn't think of that.

    Although pooping every day is not necessary, it is a good indication of how well you are doing gut wise. The human intestinal track will normally take 36 hours to process food, but eating the recommended amount of fiber, drinking enough water, avoiding extra doughy foods such as pizza dough, white bread and cheese etc. will help. Going when the urge happens is important because waiting will allow the colon to extract too much water, making the stool hard and difficult to pass. I was never able to be regular until retirement made it much easier.

      Dr. Jennifer Gunter is awesome. She might be the world’s most famous - and outspoken - gynecologist.
      In 2017, she wrote an open letter to one Gwyneth Paltrow, regarding the jade eggs being sold on her website Goop, "Dear Ms. Paltrow. It is the biggest load of garbage I have read on your site... But hey, you aren’t one to let facts get in the way of profiting from snake oil.” When one of Goop’s “medical experts” wrote that Gunter was “strangely confident” in her thoughts on jade eggs, she replied: “I am not strangely confident about vaginal health; I am appropriately confident because I am the expert.” * mic drop *

    I really like her clear explanation and the message about a healthy fibre intake. Unfortunately the animation is misleading. The biliary and pancreatic duct *excrete* bile and enzymes. There is no food travelling upward towards the liver or pancreas.
    I think this misconception in animation came from the line after in the script where she says the liver absorbs the nutrients. The transport goes from the intestine into the blood stream, through the liver into the rest of your system. The script is accurate, the animation is beautiful but needs work.

    In my experience, I know when it’s a problem when I know.
    You can “feel” being blocked up.
    I take adderall, and a side effect of that seems to be increased water uptake from my food. Lots of hard crusty poops. If I drink enough water then items fine, but if I don’t it can all get clogged up. At that point it is kind of a waiting and pushing game to get the clog unstuck…and then it all goes.
    For me once a day is important to stop the above from happening.

      Might want to do research in to WFPB(whole food plant based) for Crohn's as it can pretty much cure you of IBS. I had it for several years and told I'd live with it for the rest of my life. Then, just over night after switching 'cold-turkey', I LITERALLY cried that I didn't have the runs anymore. A DAY!!!!!! NOT ONE DOCTOR TOLD ME ANYTHING ABOUT THIS!!!! NOT ONE!!!! It took a DAY!!!!!! Granted, I only had it for several years, but even if had REDUCED the amount I would have been ecstatic! It just blew me away how much it helped!! If you have problem with gas etc with the foods, make sure you look in to the plants that won't cause as much problem at first, as it can be a huge change to your body. I personally had tons of potatoes and bananas/oatmeal were a huge portion of what I ate and STILL eat now, because it's just that good. I no longer eat any animal products either.

    Not pooping daily was one of my thyroid cancer symptoms. I had no idea. Please get your thyroid checked via blood test at the same time you get your cholesterol checked. Hopefully at your yearly doctor's visit. You might have to insist. This is something all doctors should do, but many don't. It's an easy cancer if you catch it early and is not only common but on the rise. If you have relatives with Thyroid issues it increases the risk. So if they find anything tell ALL your relatives to get theirs's checked too. There are other problems they can catch besides cancer too. These problems will fix easily with a tiny daily pill. Usually it will solve ALL KINDS of health problems you had but had not linked together as all the same problem.
