Firebox Stove & Hardwood Charcoal

  • In this video I use hardwood charcoal in my Firebox Stove to cook our supper meal.
When I began my series on using alternative fuels in my stick stoves I stated I was looking for something I could use in Canada's national parks.
I think this may be the best combination I have tried so far

Try those spuds again Mark, but add some mint to the butter ;) As a kid, I used to wrap pork sausages in aluminium foil and cook them around the edge of a fire. 40+ years on and I still haven't tried a sausage yet which tasted as good as those. The other thing would be minced / ground beef, stuffed into a hollowed out huge Spanish onion before being wrapped in foil too.
    Great video thanks!

Years ago when my kids were young. I converted a washing m as chine drum with the holes in the side to burn oak firewood. I used Steel rebar to hold the pots well above the fire.
Iwe would make a fruit cobbler as a dessert for the four of us. I used the light aluminum baking pans I put two small jewelry box hinges and a clasp to keep our makeshift oven closed. This set up laster well till my kids were in their mid teens. Then was usually just my wife and I on vacation.

This was a fantastic video, it helps jump start your imagination, over the last 50 years I have used countless different kinds of gas stoves, if any thing will let you down, it is a gas stove. I am retired now on a fixed income. the cost of bulk white gas is getting up there and you have always work on them , canister gas is getting out of the question, I still use them some times in minus 25 or colder, but now I use Trangia with methyl hydrate, 3.78L for $10.00 bucks, less than the cost of one canister for a pocket rocket. plus an Ember lit stick stove the pair complement each other. I have used your dog bowel oven in the past and love them but it made me think of my Outback oven and using it with the Ember Lit stove will have to work it out. Thank you very much Greg from Clearwater BC

I have been experimenting with coconut briquettes/logs in the Firebox. The hexagonal logs I purchased ( Napoleon brand, seen them available in the USA and I purchased in the UK) are a bit longer/taller than the Firebox so I cut them to length, which is easy to do. I than placed 5 of these Swedish torch style in the FB stove and it's been a very successful way to use carbon neutral charcoal essentially made from a waste product.
These logs do take a while to get going but a few wood wool fire starters ensure a good start and once going burn hot and long, a few hours!

    Great video!
    Some food for thought;
I have used charcoal as a forging fuel on and off for many years, and the study of ancient tooling and practice has always been a large part of that.
What you find is that, generally, airflow is more or less provided in a fairly narrow range of flow, with the amount of fuel sometimes being used to regulate heat output. Mostly though, the fires and containers are made to be of a suitable size for the job at hand, and the fuel and air consumption rate is fairly constant.
The big factor controlling heat applied to the work is either position in the fire, as in the case for forging, or distance from the fire, as in the case of cooking and other uses.
Adjusting draft to control the output of a charcoal fire tends to not work very well by and large.

My first generation Firebox Stove doesn't have that extra slot in the sides for supporting the damper, but I don't imagine it would be too difficult to add one. You know, in all the videos I've watched you make, I KNEW there was something special about you! Now, after watching you pray over your meal, I get it . . . you're a Christian. Hey, thanks for the great video, my friend.

Of the additions to the 2nd gen Firebox stove I think I like the feed ports on the side the most. I need to play with the damper more to determine its real value. I tend not to be pushy about my faith but I but I am secure in my beliefs. Thanks for commneting

Wow, Mark. Great report.. The lump charcoal is very light and super easy to ignite. If you have the room in your pack it is a great choice as a fuel. Your idea of using the ash plate as a damper is ingenious. Thanks for sharing.
Perhaps you need to bank a supply of dried onions for extended forays in the future (very little weight penalty there). I really liked the idea of using the parchment paper. That worked very well. That should be a standard component of your lightweight dutch oven kit.
God's speed on your recovery. God bless you and yours and keep the good ideas coming....

An addendum to your Dutch Oven.......
I watched an INSTRUCTABLE video this morning that suggested the use of a carbon fiber pad as a separator/insulator.
The carbon fiber pad weighs almost nothing and has some advantages.
The heat convection aspect for the system needs to be evaluated - it may restrict the heat flow excessively.
You have some work you need to do.
Hey man, we need your continued input - you have a great ability for conveying your great knowledge to the rest of the world..
I love your gentle demeanor - I pray for you.
Good luck my friend - God's speed on your recovery.

Jim Ferguson ...Good to know I am still wanted...I would love to get a hold of some carbon fibre matting. I can think of a number of uses for it. It is available here at Home Depot but it is not cheap as I would have to buy a rather large "blanket". Apprenetly, it is intended for use as a welding blanket and comes in a fairly big size. Maybe I could find someone to go splits with me.Thank you for your continued support

" Walmart in the US, sells a 4 pack of flat heavy duty skewers that look virtually identical to the fire sticks, except they are about 15 inches long and have a question mark end that's about 1 inch around. They sell for about $1.88 per 4 pack. Might work as a substitute for actual fire sticks. "

Mark, I've done much the same (using briquettes) with my homemade hobo coffee can stove, but the idea of using a folding stove just sold me. I agree with you 100% about not using wood debris from the floor of the Prov. or Canada Park. I've seen too many examples of damage to dead & green wood by unthinking campers. This is a real alternative to bringing in gas stoves with fuel and all that entails. I also know that two burner stoves made from two coffee cans hobo stoves, sterno stoves or these folding wood burning stoves would not only be practicable, but also appeal to our "get back to nature" minimalistic approach to camping. So in the next day or so, I will go out to price & maybe buy a folding wood / charcoal burning stove. Great video.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  Před 6 lety

Hi Richard. I agree charcoal, especially chunk charcoal is greatly underrated as a fuel as is wood pellets. I absolutely love my folding Firebox stove and highly recommend it to anyone who can justify the cost. Truthfully, if money was an issue for me I would be almost as happy to stay with my Ikea hobo stoves. Glad you found the video helpful and thank you for commenting

Does anything smell better than hardwood charcoal on a grill -- or firebox? I'm hungry just thinking about it. Of course in Texas where I'm from, we would be using mesquite wood. An outdoor meal cooked over an "open" fire is the absolute best. Saying Grace makes it perfect. Bless you and your channel, and prayers for continued success. @@MarkYoungBushcraft No prob.
I saw a bag at WalMart one day.
I made my charcoal for use in the garden as Biochar. Very small pieces. took all winter to make about a dozen bags of it due to size needed.
I can make almost any size charcoal - pretty easy too.
You just need a long hot fire, stainless steel stock pot with stainless steel lid, some wood pieces.
You basically cook the wood (lid on loosely) until the gasses stop flaming, then wait 30 more min.
Remove keeping lid on, let cool WITH LID ON.
Takes about 3 hours or so to make one batch.
You get nice crisp charcoal that way.
