John Hughes was a very influential man in the lives of many my age. He had his finger firmly on the pulse of youth in the 80's, and a large part of that is the music he used in his films. Not only this scene in Pretty in Pink, but Bender walking across the football field, arm raised, to "Don't You Forget About Me" or "Oh, Yeah!" playing as Mr. Rooney shuffles his way back to school. John Hughes literally was the soundtrack to my youth, and he is greatly missed. RIP to one of the best.

*_Thank you for this!_* I just talked about _"If You Leave"_ on Instagram…
When I first heard _"If You Leave"_ I just about flipped. I had been listening to OMD since about 1980, and my friends liked them when I played them, but I was the fanatic.¹
Then one day a friend runs up to me and says, _"Did you hear OMD's new song? It was on the radio!"_ I thought that was odd, given we were in the United States, but not in a big coastal city, which meant we rarely heard anything truly new wave or alternative on normal radio. Except maybe for 3 hours late Tuesday nights, thanks to me and a few other volunteers on the public radio station.
Anywizzle, I remember driving along when it began to play on the radio. It was one of those perspective skewing moments one has in life. I say this because in that moment, I could swear I hadn't heard a better song.
I was lucky enough to see them on their *Pacific Age* tour a year later. I say _"lucky enough"_ because I had to drive 11 hours in late November/early December snow from New Mexico to Colorado in a tiny red Fiat Bertone X1/9. 🌨️

Great episode, Adam. Yes, crazy they might be considered “one hit”. Saw them in Toronto last year (at Drake’s club!!!) and it was a great show. These guys still carry the room.
Multi hit wonders to me. Secret, Souvenir, So In Love.
    Soooo good.

A local "Most Hits of the 80's" radio station posed the question this morning: "Which hit song from a movie soundtrack immediately has you thinking about the movie it came from?" I immediately thought of "Purple Rain". When it was released I thought it was OK but didn't attach any significant feelings about it. When I finally DID see the movie a decade or so later, the story of where the song came from and the circumstances surrounding its creation hit me emotionally and whenever I hear it now I'm immediately transported back into the movie to that sub-plot.

I was 19 when I had my daughter in 1974 , we were very close. We listened to all of these hits together. John Hughes had his finger on the pulse of both of our generations. We grew up together. I'm going to be 68 tomorrow. She will be 49 in August. All of Adam's, " if you remember " resonates with me, but also with me living through my daughter's experiences too. Pretty in pink was a cool movie, I already owned the blue black satin brocade jacket that Ducky wore in the prom scene. I still own that tux jacket. I probably should get to selling those iconic 80s outfits. I also have a box of leg warmers. And I sincerely miss neon clothes. I loved neon pink. I dressed my daughter as cool as I could because I was the hippy outcast played by Allie Sheedy in Breakfast Club,( imagine more women/ teens identified with this character). Dressing my daughter like she was my doll. I look back and am embarrassed about my obsession with her looking good, more so than her grades. I became a high school teacher at 43. My daughter moved to California to pursue a career in the beauty industry. She is doing great. Meeting celebrities and taking care of their skin and make-up. Ultimately, she figured out that non-celebrities were more interesting and better clients.
1978, was a great year for music. Supertramp, Poco, Pink Floyd, Yes, Todd Rundgren, Dan Fogelberg, ❤ . We are such a lucky family.

I've been a fan since the fall of 85 (just before Pretty in Pink was released) when the radio played So in Love. My love for both it and If You Leave prompted me to by The Best of OMD a few years later. Not a bad song on that album, every track is awesome. I am glad to know the guys went on to create more new music afterward, even if they aren't recognized as the superstars they deserve to be.

I first discovered their catalogue beyond Pretty in Pink my freshman year in high school in 1993 when my friends older sister was leaving for college and gave me a box of CDs that included the greatest hits of OMD you showed here earlier, and other New Wave artists!! That box is what would set the tone for the rest of my life!!! Thank you for sharing another amazing classic group. I also love the 1975, which OMD exposed me to as well!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I just love that song. OMD kind of epitomized a good amount of the 80's sound and it's hard to think of a song that is more connected to a movie than "If You Leave" is to Pretty In Pink. I heard a lot of their music at the great dance clubs we had back then and really miss grooving to those songs. I'd already finished high school but I can see how that song would have been such a hit at the proms. Great interview, those guys are a riot. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada🍁

Enola Gay was fron their 2nd album Organisation.
Andy McCluskey went on to manage Atomic Kitten.
There first record Electricity was recorded in 10CC's old recording studio - strawberry studios. Martin Hannett produced it along side Joy Division's first album Unknown Pleasures.
Their first album OMD had lines of rows jelly bean shaped cut outs so you could see the orange inner sleave through the blue album cover. It was designed by Peter Saville who also did Joy Divisions albums then later New Order's.

John Hughes just 'got' teenagers wherever they were in the world, I loved his movies over here in the UK as a teenager in the 80's and OMD were also an awesome band with many great songs, they were most definitely not a one hit wonder in Europe. We went to see them last year when they were touring and they were magnificent, so many soundtracks to my younger days , people say we 50 plus year olds are just paying to see these bands to recapture our youth, I don't know about that but it does bring back memories of great times and that and watching a class band always will be worth a price of a ticket 💙
