  • Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys of OMD stopped by our studios to share the story of how their iconic song "If You Leave" was created for the movie "Pretty In Pink". There were a lot of "first times" for them with this song as you'll find out watching, unless of course... if you leave.

    i have heard so many stories about this original ending with Duckie actually getting the girl. has this ending ever been released? ive certainly never seen it. and what about the song they say they originally recorded for the scene, anyone know what song that was and if it was ever released? every girl i ever dated from the late 80s through the 90s and into the early 2000s had had a crush on Duckie and didnt understand why Andie didnt. but i mean honestly he was like 15 and she was 17 or 18 or something for starters.
    OMD had so many absolutely great songs, its a shame they are remembered here as a one hit wonder.

    • @erickchristianson5416
      @erickchristianson5416 Před 4 lety +1

      Ha! I thought the ending was great. Duckie was the hero, and in the end I imagine he gets the girl, just not Molly. The hairpiece that Blane wears in the end is awful! The song was Goddess of Love, but somehow different from the song they released on Pacific Age. Most girls I knew disliked Blane, so I don’t get that. OMD around here are best described as the band everyone loves, and no one knows who they are.

I love the band and have been a fan, but that has always been a sticking point for me. Why, if you’re so distraught over not doing it your way, would you do it then? Made quite a pile of American cash off this song and to this very day keep taking American money by touring here.

      Glad you asked. It’s more simpler than you think:
      1. They’re artists, first and foremost. They make art. Not hits.
      2. They had never been in a position where they to unfollow their usual routine of creating music. That can absolutely be consequential.
      3. Sometimes it’s embarrassing to all of a sudden have people come up to you and hound you in public. Especially overnight. You’re not prepared for that type of rocket ship stardom. I don’t care how notorious you want to be or how hard you work towards success.
      4. For a band form the UK and Australia to have success in the US is nothing to slouch at. Alas, when most Americans remember you for a song that you feel was rushed, there’s some resentment.
      5. The song is 120 bpm and the synth drum sounds on this song sounds more tinny than St. Anger. I don’t know how that’s possible. Plus all of those constant key changes will be enough to damage one’s audio receptors.
      6. They tried to replicate IYL with “Dreaming” two years later. Less key changes but still nothing like IYL. I worked in radio. Specifically Classic Hits. You couldn’t go an hour without this song being played. After a while, you get sick of yourself.
