    I left an opaque damp membrane over a patch of land around 50m2 over 3 years, I actually forgot about it until yesterday. I uncovered the membrane and I was surprised just how flat and how dry the first foot depth of soil was. Everything under it was dead other than a few insects The soil was very rich like fine compost. I recall that the land under the membrane used to be full of grass and weeds as well as being uneven. Its probably the easiest way to completely level and kill an existing lawn ready for a new lawn if you have the time.

    What no 2 seconds with Dale? You're fired! : ) j/k, I have weed barrier down after farming the same area 28 years. I fortified it with azomite, manure, and a whole host of other natural things. Living in the NC 100MPH DP rated zone a big gusts blew a row up. I went out to fix it and found I had a worm garden. I was quite thrilled to say the least. Grow bags on top this year and next year it should be a.o.k. to go, I mean grow. Thank you again for all your uploads and pet Dale for me.

      If you covered up organic material, the worms will go crazy underneath. The decomposition is very rapid. The weed barrier also helps prevent evaporation, so it could protect the soil during the heat of the summer. Dale says hi!

    I used the fabric barrier seasonably sold in Costco. I then put chips on the barrier. It worked great for about three years then weeds grew on the chips that were turning into mulch. It seemed like the roots were starting to go through the fabric.
    This fabric in the video looks much stronger. I cant believe it can stand being a walking surface.

  • @BigBassTurd
    @BigBassTurd Před 9 měsíci +25

    From reading the comments below people are using the wrong technique. Do not put wood chips on top of the weed barrier. You are defeating the purpose by giving the weeds a place to grow on top of the barrier. If you are going to use wood chips skip the weed barrier and just keep piling on wood chips once or twice a year to help snuff out the weeds. If you use wood chips though you will ultimately have to do some weeding. The weeds pull out super easy out of wood chips and you pull out the whole root system most of the time.

    • @chelseyli7478

      why does the weed grow on woodchips when there is weed cloth under the woodchips?

    • @wbhedrick
      @wbhedrick Před 4 měsíci +1

      Because dust and sand in the air accumulates in the wood chips, even stone, and that gives weeds and such a medium to grow on. Don't put anything on it, unless you want weeds

    I had a few questions. I'm looking to remove some grass in my patio area (small area), but I know nothing about landscaping. I think I have perennial weeds we need to get rid of, so I'm unsure of how to begin this project. Would I just remove the top grass (sod) with a shovel, then tamp it down, put landscaping fabric over it, put landscaping staples into it, and then cover the top of that with gravel? I keep looking for answers, but no one has been very helpful yet in their responses to me. Also, would I need to use mulch in any of these steps? Lastly, sometimes when it rains it kind of floods a couple inches, so is it okay to use the landscaping fabric then? Thanks for any help.

The netting, I believe, often comes with sod often. It is now coming up and entangling in lawn mowers and weed eaters. I believe this was supposed to be biodegradable. I could be wrong as I did not own the home when this was installed. It obviously was not biodegradable. How do I get rid of this unsightly black plastic that is showing up from under the rock and the plastic mesh that was used in sod without tearing up my entire lawn? Carry a little pocket torch and melt/singe away any visible spots of mesh when you see it (maybe save it for a day after rain/watering and don’t do it near house, dry growth or trees, and keep a hose nearby). You can also topdress the lawn to add depth over time. Lots of vids on how to do it without disrupting the lawn.

      @jwrightgardening Před 2 lety +3

      It works best if you don't put mulch on top of it. The way he has it, he can just move his pots and clean the top off easily with a hose or broom. If you put down organic mulch, it eventually breaks down and you have inches of dirt on top for weeds to grow in and the weeds barrier fabric getting in the way of planting anything. Non organic mulch like rubber or rocks doesn't break down and still collects organic material in the spaces between the chunks of mulch and weeds end up growing anyway. Trust me, it's not fun to deal with. People maintain that kind of landscape by spraying toxic chemicals to kill all living things in the mulch.

If you throw weed seed into the pile, or you place a rhizome in there that is still alive, it can turn into a nightmare. For this reason, I generally avoid composting weeds unless I'm positive they're harmless.

      You shouldn't put soil on top of weed barrier. If you do, seeds will germinate on top. There should be no soil on top of weed barrier.

      Wood chips are not permanent. The point of adding wood chips is to add organic matter to your soil, because they decompose so quickly. Using wood chips means replenishing the woodchips every year, perhaps multiple times. Weed barrier is a single installation once. It is permanent, and it does not add organic matter. It gives you a flat, walkable surface with no weeds for many years.

    What effect does the weed barrier have on earthworms and other microorganisms? I mean, if I wanted to make a hole for a plant, would the soil be dead soil?

    • @2MinuteGardenTips
      @2MinuteGardenTips  Před 2 lety +2

      The point of the weed barrier is to keep things from growing. Earthworms will surely want to visit the area if you place weed barrier on top of a lawn or actively growing weeds, because they will all decay rapidly. After they decay and the matter is processed, there won't be anything left to eat, so they should go elsewhere. I don't know what you mean by "dead soil."

      The kind that is woven weed fabric lets air and water through and keeps the soil living. Thick impermeable plastic will kill everything underneath and it becomes a nasty anaerobic mess underneath (I know from experience dealing with what the previous owner did to my yard).

      @@jwrightgardening same as what my previous home owners did😭 Now I'm trying to remove the fabric but don't know what to do with the soil underneath. It's really hard and sticky clay!

    • @joshs3956
      @joshs3956 Před rokem +1

      Weed fabric negatively impacts gas exchange and creates an anoxic environment (no oxygen). Additionally, mulch on top will break down but won’t be able to mix with the existing topsoil while also providing weed with a great opportunity to grow on the decomposing mulch.

    This will last one season, then with wind and rain you'll get weeds again. There's no avoiding it unless you live in a Mars-like climate.

      I have a couple large sections of this material both 12ft x 40ft. Not sure exactly when I put it down but it is at least 8yr old and still in good shape. This is pro grade material that is used in nurseries not that cheap stuff you get at box stores. One thing tho, the soil will be the same as when you covered it, it won't have more organic material in it as when you covered it.. and also there will occasionally be weed seeds germinating on top of it, very few. You need to remove asap because you don't want growing roots widening the spaces between the woven fabric.

      @@Uncommonsenses Yeah, because he kept the weed barrier in place. Once he pulls it up, it's back to weeds again. It's unavoidable. If you think otherwise, you don't deal with large open spaces in fertile regions.
