This is my home town. Found out recently that I am a descendent of Jesse James on my grandmothers side. When I was a kid my stepfather told me that his grandparents used to eat supper with Jesse and his wife when he posed as Doc Howard. And through my work doing home health I took care of a lady whose grandmothers parents farm was right up next to the James farm. She told me that her grandmother and her brothers played with Jesse and Frank as kids. Fascinating stories. This museum is a very neat spot. As well as our other museums In St. Joseph Mo.

The media then was not unlike the media today - The fact these people are viewed as heroes instead of what they actually were - says a lot about us as a society - I work with horses - I grew up and was raised by real cowboys - never was The James' spoken of , outside of their superior horsemanship , as heroes - they were criminals - The true story would astound you -

My great great grandfather was good friends w the James boys! He was the justice of the peace and deputy sheriff and he helped Jesse and Frank many times. The James boys aunt had letters they wrote back and forth and documents proving such. She never would release them to my great grandma so we could make copies. She did tho let her read them and told her many stories about them and my grandpa. Frank and Jesse did spend the night w my great grandma and grandpa when they were first married and I recall my grandma saying she was afraid because of what she heard about them but she said they were perfect gentlemen and thanked her kindly for her hospitality. The museum in Missouri is about my Smith family.

Why would your Grandfather befriend people who were responsible for many innocent people being killed ? Their first attempt at robbing a train resulted in several people dying excruciating deaths - I fella who was just doing his job loading coal was killed because he was trapped in the wreckage and was steamed , and scalded to death - a little girl was also killed - They sabotaged the track and caused the wreck - They were not able to steal any $$ - All that for nothing - These people were southerners -
This event and it's horrific tragedies and ruined lives did absolutely nothing to deter these criminals - Of course the city slickers up north and back east didn't read about this attempted robbery - They read the dime store bullshit propaganda that a Yankee wrote - imagine that

...I toured this house back in the 70’s. It was a crude tourist set up back then and you had a guide who explained things. The house was mainly empty and void of displays. It wasn’t painted up or anything and it was in a different location. The guide said the reason the hole where the bullet went through the wall is so big is because of souvenir hunters years ago looking for the bullet. I was fascinated buy the house back then. Then around the 80’ or 90’s I just by chance saw this house sitting on a flat bed tractor trailer moving truck sitting in a lot. Some locals told me they thought it was going to Texas that someone bought it. I was saddened by that thought and that was the last time I knew anything about it. Now I come across this video and find out its still in St. Joseph Missouri. Glad to hear of that. As a side note here. 50 miles east of St.Joe is Gallatin, Mo. A family I knew owned an old playhouse converted into a crude movie theater. This is where Frank James was tried for all his crimes. It’s not a museum tho. Frank was acquitted I believe. And another note. Many years ago Jesse’s grave was moved for some reason. My father, who was a mortician , was involved in that or at least was present when that happened. So my dad got to see him (yeah I know. In a crude sort of way but still). I will say this. Standing in Jesse James house is quite an experience,

During spring break of this year (March 15-21) I went on a small road trip with my grandma, my aunt and my cousins. On the last day of our trip, we visited the Jesse James Farm and Birthplace by Kearney, Missouri.
We got there, watched the short video they showed about the history of Jesse James, his family and the farm. Afterwards, we looked at the museum for a little bit and then went on our tour of the house.
Before I explain to you about the experience, I'm going to tell you some background information about Jesse James and this farm.
Jesse Woodson James was born on September 5, 1847 at Kearney, Missouri, the son of Rev. Robert James and Zerelda Elizabeth (Cole) James. His father died of Cholera at a Placerville, California gold camp. His mother remarried a neighboring farmer, Benjamin Simms and in 1854, he was killed in a horse accident. She then married her third husband, Dr. Reuben Samuel.
Throughout that time, she bore 8 children, from her first and last husbands. It was here that Jesse was whipped as a teenager by Union militia, who strung up his stepfather and burned nearby farms. It was also here where Pinkerton detectives bombed the house, killing Archie Samuel, the youngest son of Reuben and Zerelda, and where Zerelda lost her right hand or arm in the attack.
After Jesse was killed, he was buried here, where Zerelda could protect his grave from trespassers and souvenir hunters. Later on, his body was reinterred at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Kearney. The James family farm is said to have been haunted for over a century. It's supposedly home to a number of lingering spirits and lights are said to move both inside and outside the property buildings. Others report hearing the sounds of pounding hooves, muffled shots and cries that are reminiscent of the area history, dating back to the events of the Civil War.
Today wide arrays of mysterious happenings occur inside the house. Reports are frequent that lights are seen inside the building long after it has been locked up for the evening and movements are often seen which are never registered on a security monitoring system. Staff reports a feeling of a presence within the home. Others report that on foggy mornings, hushed voices and the sounds of restless horses can be heard from the nearby woods. However, when they follow up, there are no signs of a disturbance or tracks within the trees.
      Now, to my experience.
I didn't sense anything odd inside or outside of the house, although the inside of the house felt a little chilly. While we were outside, I was taking pictures and overheard our tour guide telling my aunt and my grandma about Ghost Hunters coming out and investigating. Since I'm extremely interested in those things, I had to join the conversation to get more details. I believe she said the ghost hunters got several EVPs but I'm not sure what else occurred.
She told us that one day when she was getting ready to give a tour and there was nobody inside the house, she, along with the tourists, heard a loud crash inside. Somehow the phone seemed to have been thrown across the room, which I don't think would just happen on its own. She also told us about a man getting his picture taken on one side of the house, next to a window and apparently after developing the film, he saw what appeared to be two outlaw-looking men standing there with him. They weren't there when the picture was taken.
I decided to take a picture of my cousins next to that same window, along with taking more pictures. Later on, I was zooming in on the pictures to see if I had caught anything interesting and I saw the face of a man with a white beard in the window and he looked as if he could have been Zerelda's husband, Dr. Reuben Samuel, or possibly a Civil War soldier. I looked at picture of another window, zoomed in, and noticed I had caught another face. This one appears to be a man with a cowboy hat and a mustache.
I was very excited, and still am, because I had never caught images like these on film before.

I do genealogy and I live in Clay County, Missouri (Jesse James' birthplace). I had a distant cousin on my g-g-grandmother's side named Ballentine Monkiers in the 1870's. Ballentine lived on a farm about a quarter of a mile from Frank and Jesse's farm in Kearney, MO. When Frank and Jesse robbed their first bank, the Clay County Saving Bank in Liberty, MO, the Clay County sheriff arrested Ballentine and held him for two or three days. The sheriff assumed that he was a part of the James Gang since he was a known associate of Frank and Jesse. They were all seen around town together several times. However, the sheriff was wrong and released Ballentine. It's true that Ballentine was a good friend of Frank and Jesse's, but he never joined the gang and never robbed any banks.

The Ford's were related to the James family actually. Jesse James didn't die that day. He survived and lived to be 104 years old. The story of his murder has as many holes in it as Bonnie and Clyde had in them when they were blasted to smithereens. Miss Z his mother even said that is not my son. Another man was buried instead and not many knew what he even looked like since he wasn't posting on FB and cameras were not available. As you yourself even said' they think he might of looked like' He passed away using the alias Frank Dalton in bed boots off. Not in a blaze of glory as most gunslinger's did. The house is not on same spot neither it was moved. Look up Brett Hall channel on CZcams channel and can see all I'm saying. It's an interview with a James family descendant.
