I'd like to see more exploration of how this thing can do things a drum set can't typically do - incorporations of many different sounds (various hand drums, bells, electronic kit sounds, other noises and soundscapes or samples).

Why not just play the real drums? Looks like live karaoke with a simple drum trigger

Several great reasons for this. It moves and sets up way easier and it's much more controlled if needed. Takes up much less space which can be important for some venues. Tons of sound options, the percussionist can stand and move around it they'd like. I saw a live band with this at Disney and the audience was amazed. No karaoke feeling at all. Peter Gabriel, Mick Fleetwood, Earth, Wind and Fire have used them. Why not play percussion with 10 fingers instead of two hands and two feet?
