    It’s great to see the demonstration of a Zendrum by an owner who has the same attitude I have about drums. A drummer isn’t just a time keeper; a drummer is also a percussionist.

    Thanks dude! I like the way you moved through, describing is sections. The symmetrical layout reminds me of some interview I saw of Mike Mangini explaining why he has a symmetrical, mirrored layout for his kit, to avoid having to cross his arms over.

    Thanks Ken! These are all my own samples, except the congas and timbales. Drums, cymbals and cowbell by yours truly!

    Thanks for sharing this - very instructive. Rethinking my layout and you have a very logical one from which to draw (I have a standard LT)...

    Hi, what system or module are you running this through? Great video, thanks for sharing!

      nomind659 Thanks for your comment! The sounds are all samples I have recorded myself, in many velocity layers (up to 99 per instrument). They’re imported into two 2Box DrumIt5 drum modules. I need two of them because they only allow a limited number of instruments to be assigned- to cover all the Zendrum pads requires two.

    Awesomeness! I looked for the LTD on zendrum, how do i go about purchasing this setup? It is absolutely awesome. I'm a roland SP8 player and would love something like this to avoid taking up 10sqft of stage space

      Glad you like it! I’m not sure whether it’s displayed as an official model on their site, but via their Custom Shop you can get any custom layout you want. I’m sure they could make you one like this! I had an SPD-8 back in the day; that’s an old one!

      I believe so! Please ask David Haney, feel free to reference my name and this video. He called this layout the “Laptop Dude” custom shop model- I’m sure he’ll remember that! Ha.
      For what it’s worth: I love this layout and wouldn’t change a thing.

    Thanks for this breakdown of your setup...really impressive, and a lot of great thought has gone into your layout. I've been trying to identify the pedals that you're using, without success. In particular, what are those bass drum pedals? I've never seen an electronic drum pedal with that design before.
    I also agree with Ken...your samples sound great! Hoping to see them for sale sometime soon....

      Thanks for the comments! The bass drum triggers are Roland KD7s. I’m using Tama bass drum pedals. The Hihat pedal is a Roland FD6. I’ll post more soon. Thanks!

    Very nice sounds - I have both an LT and EXP and looking at picking up a 2Box unit as well. How did you get the hi-hats to work from open to closed? From what I've read, the 2Bs don't have mute groups. I prefer not to use pedals, and perhaps that has something to do with how you got it to work(?). Thanks!

    • @darthsleader
      @darthsleader  Před 3 lety

      Hey, thanks for watching! Yeah, 2Box is a bit of a pain concerning the Hihat. The new Mark II module does support aftermarket pedals and pads. I’m using a pedal interface box made by Zourman. It really works well! It goes between your Hihat pedal (mine is Roland FD6) and the 2Box unit and allows you to use non-2Box hh pedals.
      However, I understand that you want to do this WITHOUT pedals. I’ve done that as well on my Zendrum ZX. The way I did it was to purchase a Midi Solutions Event Processor. This is a “Swiss army knife” midi box that can convert incoming midi messages to different types of outgoing midi.
      What I did was I separated the Hihat sample set into its open and closed articulations separately (get back to me if you don’t know how to do that with the 2Box DSND tool). Then, you simply assign them to the Zendrum pads you want for open and closed hh. The issue is getting the closed HH sound to mute any current open HH sounds. That’s where the Event Processor comes in. You need to program it so that the closed HH sound note number also triggers a choke for the open HH sound’s note number. (The open sound must be assigned to a cymbal slot so that the choke function is available.)

      @@darthsleader Thank you for your response and detailed answer! It reads clearly, though we'll see what happens once I dig around. Still haven't finalized on 2B (looking at the Drumit 3), but their units seem to be the best of their kind. I understand the 2B HH is even a bit of a problem for ALL pedal users and the Zourman seems to be the go-to solution. So much for 'universal,' and keeping the chain simple - but these things are never straight forward as we know. We're just lucky to be able to pull this off at all. Thanks again, and best to you!

  • @SoCalVipers

    Brilliant! I've decided to dust off my Zen drum and give it a try again. I could never find a setup that made sense to me. Your setup is genius! I have the stock LT, but I think I can get close enough to what you have. I'm not crazy about the idea of having two 2Boxes. If I only have one, what are my limitations? Also, I don't have the time, patience or skills to make my own samples. What are some good samples I can buy? I really want dark cymbals, a Black Beauty snare, and huge kick. Thanks!

    • @darthsleader
      @darthsleader  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the kind words!
      2Box instruments can only be assigned to the trigger inputs, so you’re limited to a certain number: BD, SD, rim shot, 4 toms, 4 aux (tom rims), HH and 3 cymbals (each cymbal can have up to 3 zones). You CAN trick the system by building cymbal files with different cymbals for each zone, but it’s unwieldy and you can’t easily control the volume of each zone (you can do so on your computer but not from the 2Box).
      As far as samples, I don’t know where you can get premade sounds, since I make my own. But I would sell copies of mine if you like the sound of them. All the cymbals I’ve sampled are Zildjian K and K Custom. Enjoy!

      @@darthsleader Thanks for the reply. How do you set up the cymbal choke? How do you tell the sampler that one button chokes all chokable cymbals?

    • @darthsleader
      @darthsleader  Před 3 lety

      @@SoCalVipers I use a Midi Solutions Event Processor. I wrote a program for it which generates all three choke notes (one for each cymbal) when the sustain switch is pressed.

      @@darthsleader Thanks...I'll look into that. I might buy a Pearl mimic Pro as the drum module. Do you know if it will work as well as the 2box? I happen to like the sounds in the Pearl, and it looks easy to use.
