- Right now all eyes are on Sony's next console, PlayStation 5. But as we look back on the eighth generation, and PS4 specifically, we really have to appreciate what this console meant to Sony's business. PlayStation 4 represents a U-turn at the company, with everyone being laser focused on getting it right. And when you look beyond the initial sales, you see some of Sony's most dynamic initiatives in PlayStation history, from the mid-cycle PS4 Pro, to PSVR, and even PlayStation Now. It really feels like another PS1, setting a foundation for what will be the future of the brand. So let's talk that legacy! Or really, you watch this video and I'll get back to Ghost of Tsushima because I'm still working my way through that. It's hard to finish games when I make videos like these, you feel me.

Man i am very disappointed with myself. Started mostly with Nintendo consoles from the beginning (NES, N64, GC, DS, Wii.) Had a ps2 and ps1 as well but not many games. Got into Xbox sadly. I think ps3&4 would have been the way to go for me. Now's the time, PS5 here I come mang.

I'm 42 yrs old and I still remember buying the PS1 in 1997 in a store called Future Shop, then I bought the PS2 at Target Store, then PS3 at Target Store, PS4 at Wal-Mart, PS4 Pro from Amazon and now I'm waiting for the PS5.

He is one of the the most consistent content producers of all time for the playstation brand (dude had done an episode every week for like 10 years), 3. If it failed ,it might have been the last traditional console we ever got . PS4's success has secured the existence of PS5 and perhaps further future hardware as well as the existence of expensive triple A releases. If it failed , we would probably be condemned to cheap mobile games made for the huge masses owning phones and not caring about cutting edge graphics/serious gaming experiences and shitty F2P games full of microtransactions . So its important that all of us move into nextgen and convince our friends to do so to . That way we will ensure a bright future of nextgen after nextgen of graphical and gaming greatness .
I love playstation, but we wouldn't have been stuck with mobile games. Everyone would have just switched to pc.

Nah, I think it's more likely that a lot of third party devs (especially Japanese) would've returned to Nintendo. They were all there to begin with but there was a mass exodus to Sony when Nintendo switched to cartridges for the N64.

What? Lol PS3 did SO much more than PS4 in media playing. PS4 doesn't even support as many video files as PS3 once they finally introduce the feature, not to mention you can't store any files on the system itself. I legit got my third ps3 (used and cheap) last year just to have another multimedia / different region BD player. PS3 is just so... perfect.

@@YeahNaw I meant it had more apps for streaming etc. I know the PS3 originally had the SD card slots and audio CD support and many more features the PS4 doesn't.
PS3 could be used as a better multimedia player than PS4. It could evenplay DVD's for crying out loud unlike the PS4!
Yeah, I honestly liked the PS3 generation better. My favorite PS3 is the 80gb CECHE01, because I can play PS1-PS3 games on it, not just one generation like the PS4. The PS3 also had alot more features (as well as better audio) than the PS4, not to mention free online multiplayer. I still play my PS3 today and enjoy every second of it.
Coming all the way from PSx, PS2, PS3, PS4 enjoyed every one of them, so looking forward to the new generation as well!

I can't even imagine what kind of awesome games we'll get with PS5. Look at Ghost of Tsushima and how good it looks and plays on a PS4 with really old and slow hardware. Now imagine games like GoT on PS5...

@@ethandavis4970 I think what he means is that GoT is the final "bang" of PS4 exclusives for the PS4. Similar to how the Last of Us on PS3 was the final major AAA story-heavy exclusive (not counting Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus and Grand Turismo that released late 2013

I got a PS4 in late 2015, before I entered middle school, specifically when I was in the fifth grade.
The ps4 was my first playstation since ps2, absolutely loved all the games on it.

This is the generation that brought me back to consoles... ps4 pro pretty much turned console as my main gaming system complimented by switch and my gaming pc.
I have played all of them exclusives but didn’t actually realise how many Sony actually had. When u started showing the boxes I was like woah
And the most impressive part is the streak of high quality games since maybe uncharted 4? Every games after that keeps getting better and better. Definitely difficult to maintain such high standards and consistency.

The PS2 was my first PlayStation, and I will always remember it for establishing why the brand is my favorite gaming platform. Unique, must-have exclusive experiences that coaxed me away and convinced me to trade my Xbox for a PS2. Plus, it has one of the greatest gaming libraries ever.
The PS3 will always be the most nostalgic PlayStation for myself. It was the PlayStation of my preteen and early teenage years. Much like myself, it was the problem child of its family. It also introduced me to some of my all time favorite gaming franchises like Uncharted, The Last of Us, inFamous etc. Not to mention online multiplayer gaming with PSN. The PS3 was...special and unforgettable.
The PS4 is my favorite game console of all time. It redefined and amped up all of my favorite exclusive game franchises to new heights (TLOU Part 2, Uncharted 4, GOW) and it introduced brand new high quality exclusives as well (Spider-Man, HZD, GOT etc.) and it even brought back classics that I never got to play that are now beloved to me (FFVII Remake). It also delivered amazing 3rd party support, established great indie support, and it innovated with brand new features (Share Button/Photo Mode etc.) and hardware (PSVR).
My biggest regret? Being born at the tail end of the PS1’s lifecycle (late 90’s). Regardless, I’m grateful that I’m alive to see Sony usher in their greatest generation yet with the PS5. #GreatnessAwaits #PlayHasNoLimits

The PS4 gen has been such an amazing journey so many good PS exclusives and so many memories I will remember forever... really gonna miss it but at the same time I'm also really excited to go on a whole new journey with PS5
PS4 was my first personal console I got for myself. Honestly if it wasn’t as good as it was all these years, I think I would have just stayed on pc and ignore consoles altogether.
I just love PlayStation cause I love single player offline games with a good story and it seems like they are always focused on that.

PS4 really did well after the issues of the PS3 - when your platform is the base platform that all developers want to work on first and foremost, and consumers want those games (creating a positive feedback loop), you know you've hit a winner. Ryan said it well - it has something for everyone. Even those who don't care much for the first party titles have a breadth of third parties across various genres they can play.
The Order: 1886 was super underrated. The game itself was a bit short (not the 5 hours people seem to tout, its around 10 or so) but it looked fantastic and played great.
I was expecting an entire half of the game to be about Sir Gallahad's excommunication.
@BONES story was fine. I didn't think it was boring. The shooting was good and the gun variety was neat.
I bought my PS4 in April 2020 (for FF7 Remake) and played video games for the first time in nearly 20 years. It was an amazing experience when I grabbed the controller, because the unchanging feel of it reminded me of all the good memories of PS1 era, and I was impressed by how they kept working so hard to improve this industry while I was completely ignorant for 20 years. I remember I bought Sega Saturn first at that time because I was skeptical about how Sony could handle its first console in the game industry. I was wrong. Now I’m playing Sega’s games with PS4 and that’s still weird to me, but it makes me feel that Sony came a long long way. I’m really enjoying playing the games now.

I love my ps4, at the time I bought it , it was the console that I owned early in its lifecycle ( bought it almost 2 years after launch with my own money , but I bought my switch 6 months after launch but I don’t really play it much ) and I’ll probably stick with my ps4 for a while as I have about a little over 70 games on my backlog

The PS4’s library has to be one of the best ever, you gotta admit that.
It definitely rivals the PS2’s, which has been regarded as the greatest game console library of all time for two decades at this point.
I think the PS3 had a better game library in terms of exclusives compared to the PS4.

I was lucky to have had PS1 and PS2 in my childhood. Eventually, I got to buy myself the PS3 slim and recently the PS4 PRO and it was worth every cent. I have been enjoying so much my PS4 PRO and the graphics looks just amazing. It really has brought me so much joy. Just to be able to play modern games in a great quality is just something I could not do on my laptop, which I only use for work and studying.. Though PC might look even better, it is waaaaaaay more expensive than these consoles and I just can not afford to set up one. Eventually, I will be looking forward to buy the PS5 Slim or PRO.

I bought concrete genie a couple months ago because of the box art. It was such a wonderful game, neat vr mode on the side. It’s one my favourite games from the last couple years. My only complaint was that it was a little too short, even though it was like 6 hours long.

PS4 PlayLink party games are some of our favorite local multiplayer games. You use your tablet or cellphone as the controller and some games go beyond 4 players. We’ve done 6 players at once. I’m not surprised that you didn’t mention those because most of them didn’t come to the US but since PS4 isn’t region locked, I was able to import games from around the world. Definitely worth looking into if you’re interested in party games. Frantics, Melbits World and Chimparty are just a few.
I enjoyed my ps4 got every game on day 1 and still buying ps4 newest games releasing I will still be on it for a few years before upgrading too

You forgot to mention That the PS3 plays ps1 games, is the reason I kept my ps3 slim.. I own a PS3slim, ps4slim, A Xbox360 slim, A retro-bit (RETROCADE) plays acade and old games, and NES classic, mode to play 210 games ..lol. Im 62 year old gamer, and Proud of it. lol.. Great channel..

I love my PS4 slim! I was late in the game and didn't get it until January of 2019. But I have enjoyed it and have about 60 physical games for it. Mainly why I waited was I got my first PS3 in 2016 (which is the fat 60gb true backwards compatible, upgraded to a 1tb hard drive) and was enjoying and collecting for that one. And when the Spider-Man bundle came out at a good price. (which I love the box art and it came with the physical game) I had to jump onto the next gen. and get a PS4. I have been a fan since the beginning of PlayStation. And still to this day, the PS2 is my favorite console and the PS2 dual shock is still to me the best controller ever made.

I remember me and a buddy hung out and went to GameStop the night the PS4 launched because I had pre-ordered it. They lined us up outside and brought us in the store in groups of five or ten and In the Air Tonight was playing lol. I remember I had class the next morning and I had to work that evening. But after I got off, my friends and I played the heck outta that thing. Battlefield 4 and COD Ghosts. Man, that doesn't seem like 7 years ago...

PS3 launch felt like the Saturn all over again to me. So much power, but nobody was utilizing it properly. I was in the military when this gen launched. Everyone in the barracks got a 360 on launch. Few people got a PS3, and there just wasn't much out for it at that time that was better than the 360 versions. Move forward say 2yrs...all those 360s had RRd...and Sony was beginning to hit on all cylinders. I finally picked one up when MGS4 came out, the momentum was swaying to Sony at that time. From that point on, it was game on. PS3 had one of the best 2nd ½s I've ever seen. So much momentum on PS4 launch. And I remember getting one and a couple games, and then it was like ok what now for monnnths. I mainly went XBOX for that gen. Not sure exactly why, but I just preferred the feel I guess, and Xbox live. Xbox One X was a big part of it. As well as paying for PS Network. If I'm gonna pay for a service, Live is where it's at. Or was then. They've improved PS Network a lot since then. Not to mention, all the kids had swapped sides from 360 to PS4. The servers were much clearer on XOne at the time lol.
I own ALMOST every consoles since the 6th generation and I've got to say PlayStation 4 is my favorite console of all time let's see what the next gen got for us in the near future

Thanks to the PS4 god of war bundle, my gf didn't know what to get me one Christmas and boom. Fast forward 2 years and I have over 60 PS4 games physical, and I went ahead and got dozens of the retro titles I liked as a kid along with a ps1 and PS2. I missed the PS3 mostly, I had one but stopped caring after god of war 3 and so going back to that too with easily over 30 beautiful games I totally missed out on . I fkn love PlayStation. Hope they keep the momentum
I'm actually turning 40 at the same time the PS5 comes out, I've been a gamer for, well, almost 40 years went from Coleco, Atari, NEs, SNES, N64, Playstation, PS2, PS3, PS4 and my current console, PS4 Pro...the road to PS5 is an amazing part of my life

PlayStation is simply amazing. Enjoyed the PS4. I’ll try to get a PS5 on my birthday which is on December. Time for me to save maybe $600 just in case so yeah.

At least for me, because of medschool, I have to ditch my inner game. I got the PS4 as a gift from my brother (death stranding limited edition), and just got into games (and your channel) right now. I will buy at least 2 brand new ps4 pro's to have in stock. My game library is a little shy of 40 games (you know, quarantine)... There is soo much thing to do in this generation that I will be jumping from ps4-ps5, xboxone-seriesx all the time. And as always, your videos are great.
About 3-4 years ago I would've said that the ps4 gen was boring. But now, I'll say its amazing - Ive had so many great memories with this console!

I bought my ps4 2 years ago. I had a ps3 for about 12 years. I am glad that I bought the ps4 late in its lift cycle. There are so many good deals out there now, including places like ebay and sales on the psn.

I feel like the end of consoles is the end of mainstream gaming. there are no 30-year-olds with kids who have the time or patience to build a gaming pc, they just want to relax and play 2K with their friends.

This video was fun ! This was a great generation. We didn’t see as many releases as last gen (Probably because devs are taking longer on development), but we saw several bangers this gen!
PS Now will make more sense to the consumer in a couple of years when it has an additional 100+ PS5 games to download alongside the 300+ PS4 games that we are currently able to download.

Dwight Schrute in several years time many PlayStation owners will not be able to buy PS4 games. For example, what about the youth market who will buy the PS5 as their first console? What about Xbox converts who have decided to buy a PS5 to play classic PS4 games? Ps Now will be a great way to introduce new PlayStation gamers to ‘classic’ PS4 games
Simon Jones true maybe later in ps5s life though because ps4 games are still easy to get so people could buy the games they want now. Although later it might make sense

I think 7 years is a good life cycle for consoles... 1 entrance year, 5 main prime years and 1 exit year.
Just got a ps4 couple months back wanted to wait for ps5 but no launch date and pricing detail so i went with it,and man i was missing out last console i had was the psp and only once i got it i realised i needed a ps,so won't be upgrading on launch ,ill play through all ps4 games and by then hopefully it's a bit cheaper too.

I loved PS3. But I've had some amazing single player experiences on PS4- some games that I got so emotionally invested in that it completely surprised me. I fell away from video games for a while- and Detroit: Become Human sucked me back in. The Last of Us Remastered, Spiderman, Resident Evil 2 and 3 Remake... I can't believe it's been 7 years. I can't wait to see what's in store on PS5!
I dont have a ps4 but still picked a dualshock 4 up because they make good bluetooth controller for mobile phones.
PS4 games boosted on PS5 will be loved and revered!

Boosted PS4 games should run beautifully on PS5. 4K60 HDR on most titles - and probably higher fps, maybe 120fps on some titles. They could even be optimized for Ray Tracing!

I gotta give the PS4 credit for its reliability. It's the only PS console I've never had issues with. Went through 2 PS1 consoles. Regularly had to take my PS2 apart to clean the lens. PS3 was an absolute nightmare and even my third PS3 is on its last legs. My PS4 is a launch model and never had a single problem with it.
