STEAM DECK - HOW TO INSTALL ROCKSTAR LAUNCHER

- In this video I will show you the easiest way to install Rockstar Launcher on the Steam Deck. After you install it, you will be able to download games such as Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption II on the Steam Deck. I will have future videos on the compatibility of some of those games.
#steamdeck #streamdeck #valve
Important Notes Before You Start:
If possible, I highly recommend using a USB hub so that you can connect a mouse + keyboard. It will make the process much simpler. You can still do this without it by using the touchscreen and the on-screen keyboard, but using a real mouse + keyboard is way easier. Below is the exact hub I use, and it also has pass-through charging, hdmi-out, and an ethernet port, so it has many different features that are very useful. amzn.to/39D4Mkw
Instructions:
1) To download the Rockstar Launcher Installer, you will first need to get to your Desktop. To do this, click the STEAM button on the left of your Steam Deck (under the left trackpad), then click Power and Switch to Desktop.
2) Once on the Desktop, launch your Browser, and search for Rockstar Games Launcher, then click on the first search result it gives you, then click Download For Windows, and it will download the launcher to your Downloads folder on your Steam Deck. You can now close your browser.
3) Open Steam. NOT Gaming Mode, just Steam. The icon should be on your desktop.
4) When inside Steam, click LIBRARY on the top left, then click Add A Game on the bottom left, then click Add a Non-Steam Game
5) In the Add a Game screen, click BROWSE on the bottom middle. When Browse launches, click on the bottom where it says File Type: and select All Files.
6) I cannot say which directory you will be in right now, as each persons last directory will be different, but the directory you need to navigate to is /home/deck/Downloads
7) Once you're there, you should see Rockstar-Games-Launcher.exe. Click that and click OPEN. Now click ADD SELECTED PROGRAMS on the bottom right.
8) Now find Rockstar-Games-Launcher.exe in your Library list on the left, then right click on it and go to Properties. If you're using the touch screen, click on it and then click the cog wheel on the right, as this will also take you to Properties.
9) Now click COMPATABILITY on the left, and on the right make sure Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool is checked. Once its checked, click on the box below it and select Proton Experimental. You can also try Proton 7.0-2 if Experimental does not work for you. After you have selected it, you can click X on the top right to close this window.
10) Now click Play, and the Rockstar Installer will launch. From here you can proceed like you normally would in Windows. After it installs, click the X on the top right to close it if you did not uncheck the box to Launch it.
11) Now we need to add Rockstar Launcher to Steam. We're going to follow the same procedure we did earlier. Click Add a Game on the bottom left, then Add a Non-Steam Game, then click Browse.
12) Now in the Browse screen, you will need to find the exact location of the Rockstar Launcher. Click on the top bar where the path is, and select /home/deck/, then click .local, share, Steam, steamapps, compatdata. You will now see a bunch of different folders, however I cannot say which one of them will be the right one for you. You will need to go into them all one by one until you find the right one. For me, it was somewhere in the middle. Once inside each one, you will need to navigate to pfx, drive_c, Program Files, and see if the Rockstar folder is in there or not. If it's not, just click the Back button (to the right of path on top), and try the same process with the next folder. Keep doing this until you find that Rockstar folder. It should only take a minute or two to find it. Once you find it, make sure on the bottom where it says File Type you have it set to All Files, then scroll down until you find Launcher.exe and select it, then click Add Selected Programs.
13) You will now Launcher.exe in your Steam Library. Right click on it and go to Properties and rename it to Rockstar Launcher, or something else of your choosing, and you will also need to set its Compatibility to use Proton Experimental like we did earlier.
14) Now we need to remove the Installer from Steam from earlier in this process. We've now installed the launcher, so we dont need the installation here anymore. Right click Rockstar-Games-Launcher.exe in your Library, then click Manage - Remove non-Steam game from library.
15) That's it. Rockstar Launcher is now installed. You can launch it by clicking Play. - Jak na to + styl
Tried to launch it with experimental but didn't work so I tried 7.04 is it okay I'ma completely new to PC so I don't know anything
If it works with 7.04 then yes, thats fine. It's very strange, for some people it works with Experimental and others not. Doesn't make much sense, but if it launches then you should be good to go.
cheers man it just kept on coming up saying failed to launch rockstar games launcher, but I saw your comment and changed it to that and it worked. this should be saved as the pinned comment so people know about this because it was annoying me. so much appreciated

You actually did the rest of us a favour by mentioning this lol.
Thank you so so much! Worked perfectly and easy to understand. Great tutorial and thank you so much for putting it in writing too.
I'm completely new to PC gaming so had no idea what I was doing.
So I slowed the video down & followed your instructions & I actually did it.
Thank you! Subscribed 💜
No problem, glad I could help. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll help out if I can.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay only thing I can think of that I don't understand is Anisotropic filtering. On GTA V there are different choices like x2 or x4 but I have no idea which to choose, if any.
Anisotropic filtering basically just reduces blurriness and visual artifacts in the distance. It can impact performance though, so I would try it off and play for 5 min, then 2x and play for 5 min, then 4x and play for 5 min, and so on.. and see which works best for you.

Great video and thx for sharing your knowledge.

A most excellent video. I followed your instructions and got it! One question, however, do you need to add Proton to the games as well? Or will the launcher take care of that too? With my many thanks Less Talk!😃
The launcher will take care of it as long as you launch the launcher using Proton.

Great video. Thank you
It important to add the launcher to steam first as show here before downloading otherwise the rockstar launcher won’t detect the game which is a pain to have to re-download!
I did all the steps downloaded and everything I tried to open rdr2 but it just takes me back after 10 seconds to the rockstar launcher any help ?
After I went through all the files and stuff, after I get through all that and chance the name, I go to enable “force the use of specific steam play compatibility tool.” It won’t let me enable it?
Jan 2023, the lastest proton didn't work for me. But the second latest version of Proton did work. Thanks so much for this video. Playing rdr2 was a huge reason I got the Steam Deck
How it actually perform? Is it much worse than in other videos with steam version tests?
@@steal2319 It should be exactly the same apart from the fact that there's no shader cache that steam normally provides. This may make it stutter slightly the first time you go through an area
The steam version also runs through Rockstar Game Launcher but doesn't require you to download it yourself

I’m trying all of them none of them work for me
im new to linux how do i install gta v which is the easy part but does it automattically ad it to steam or will it work just like pc where i go to add non steam game and done ?
dont try to skip the first sintall by using ''wine'' its important that you add it as a non steam game so you can make it with compatibility with proton experimental . Otherwise it will mostly overheat .
By the by, Less Talk, would you be interested in making a video about how to use Vortex Mod Manager with Steam Deck? It would be very much appreciated!
I bought this game on steam, but it doesn’t show up in my library. It only shows up on rockstar launcher and I don’t know why and once I installed it on my steam deck I keep getting a social club error message error code 18 and I can’t play the game
Why does that Rocksdtar folder dont pup up in my steam deck when you go to that c drive??
I already own GTA V on steam on my laptop but when I download on steam deck using the above instructions it saying I have to buy it again. Any ideas why?
Do I need to install the rockstar launcher if I buy gta 5 on steam? Or could I just play the game off of steam?
Also with this mode I get the Offline Mode or Offline Signin Failed Error. Even though the Launcher just connected fine and even updated itself through my WiFi connection, which is strong & stable. My game is bought and installed through steam... What a mystery!
My launcher folder was actually named different. Found it by sorting by Date Modified. The most recent one had to be the Rockstar one.
Thanks.
my friend can you elaborate so that i can maybe fix it that way?
I NEED HELP: So on GTA 5 on Steam Deck, I keep getting this error that says “Game launch error. Please try again later. I have a problem when i remove the rockstar games launcher exe and try to launcher it does not launch the app how can i fix this and i did all the steps in this video ?
Thank yah!
What if you use Proton Experimental for the launcher but want to use a Proton GE for a game? Is that possible? What if you added the individual game to your library and set it to run with Proton GE while the launcher is using Experimental, will it worked or glitch out?
It's not possible as far as I know. The game will launch using whatever Proton you selected with the launcher. But why would you do that? If you want to use GE, just set the launcher to use GE. Adding the game to your library directly is complicated, but doable, however it will still be the same result. If you launch the game directly, it will just launch the launcher first before launching the game, so in both cases it will launch the launcher and the game using whatever Proton you have selected in Steam.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay thanks, I thought that may be the case. I think Boilr might add games individually to your Steam list, but I'm not sure.
You have to do all this to get a steam deck compatible game to play? That 363 file doesn’t even exist in my composts folder.
IDK if it was mentioned but you need to enable Hidden Files for the desktop file Explorer
Is that why the /local file won't show up for me?
Quick question if I Downlaod steam version of gta will the file show up for gta in desktop mode because I wanted to try fivem
Not sure what you mean exactly. What files? Any game you purchase on Steam directly can be played in Gaming Mode or Desktop Mode, through Steam. But if you buy a game on Steam, it can't be played in Rockstar Launcher, and vice versa if you buy a game in Rockstar Launcher, it can't be played in Steam, though it can be added TO Steam as a Non Steam Game and then Steam will just launch it for you, but you'll still be playing it from Rockstar Launcher since that is where you bought it originally.
oct 20/2022 this isn't working for me, I keep getting "failed to launch rockstar games launcher" error after I switch to "proton experimental" do I need to update proton?
Try a different proton, like 7.0-2.
So once it install in prompt me to sign into the launcher skipping that last few steps with going into the file manager. Is that needed to go into there? I’m completely lost when it comes to stuff like this.
thats because the launcher auto launches after installing. just close it and follow the rest of the steps to add it to steam. or you can log in and then close it. doesnt matter. youll still have to log in next time you open it if you dont do it at that point.
The Goat!
So I did everything up to the steam deck local part ? I don’t see that on mine ? but everytime I click the launcher it does the installing launcher stuff everytime how do I fix this ?
Not familiar with PC much . and is it possible to install them directly to my SD card cause I don’t have the memory on my console to fit these games
I did it and it worked but now I can’t access my library to downlomy games please someone help
Hi. So im getting an error with incomplete installation. (Error code 1). I also used the heroic games launcher but still- Connection timed out / R* servers offline etc. And weirdly enough i can't access the launcher download page without vpn on deck. On Windows pc it works fine but on deck nah. 404 - timed out / website not responding. Weird-
Error 01 for me too…
How did you get home deck local mine didn’t say local
This may be a stupid question as I am new to the pc community, does the steam deck have to be dual booted in order to do this? Thanks in advance!
No
I just tried it and it doesn't seem to work anymore.
€: found the Problem, needed to use Proton 7 and not experimental.
Thank you for sharing this dude!
Right. The launcher seems to run Proton Experimental by default. My game just kept crashing every time I paused it. Very frustrating. Not even running it on PE helped it stop freezing every time I paused the game.
Hi, this is a big ask but is there any way I can get my game onto the steam home menu? And maybe the rockstar launcher boots in the background? Thanks.
I recall seeing a method on Reddit, but it was very complicated and I couldn't get it working properly. I think it's easier to just add Rockstar Launcher to steam, then launch Rockstar Launcher, then launch GTAV.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay yeah that’s what I had to settle with unfortunately 😕. Thanks for the help.
Bro it needs all the time 1gb to download the launcher how do I skip that a d go directly to the rockstar launcher
It won’t let me install location because it says I have o gb how do I fix this
Thx man. Finding c folder was a pain in the a for me.
no problem. you can always use the search feature in the Dolphin File explorer, which will make it a lot easier. If you know for example the folder has the word 'Rockstar' in it, just search for Rockstar and it will show you every single Folder on your drive or sd card that has the word rockstar in it, then go into each one by one, if there are multiple, and find the right one. that's much easier then going folder by folding and manually searching for anything with rockstar in the name.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay thx!
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay Hey, what command do i use to tell rockstar launcher to have acces to my sd card?
Right click on Rockstar Launcher in your Steam Library and go to Properties, then put the following command into LAUNCH OPTIONS
STEAM_COMPAT_MOUNTS=/run/media/mmcblk0p1 %command%
You may have to replace mmcblk0p1 with a different name if your SD card is named differently though. To find the name, go to Steam Desktop and open Dolphin File explorer and scroll all the way down on the list on the left and find your SD Card, click on it, and then check what its called in the full path bar on top, then just copy that name or write it down and replace it in the command above.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay thx!!! It really has a linux vibe in a negative way... still awsome device!
I did everything but stuck on ur Step 12 where I cant find the Rockstar Launcher exact location. I did however download into my sd card, not the steam deck drive. Is there another location I should check other than .local?
if you installed it onto your sd card, then it will not be in .local
when browsing for the path, click all the way to the top to get to the root of the drive, it will just have 1 forward slash like /
then look for /run/media and one of the folders inside media there should be something like /run/media/mmcblk0p1
that is the path to your sd card. once in there, rockstar should be somewhere there depending on the exact path you installed it to, which i cant really say. if anything, just go to desktop mode, open dolphin file explorer, navigate to /run/media/mmcblk0p1, then click the search icon on the top right, and search for the word rockstar. it will find the folder for rockstar for you and give you the path to it.

Unfortunately the rockstar launcher version of RDR2 doesn't work out of the box on the Steam Deck.
You can get it running with a complicated workaround. If you want to try that, here is a guide from reddit: www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/xhoy9l/red_dead_redemption_2_rockstar_launcher_version/
Alternatively, if you dont mind buying the game again, you can buy it directly from Steam and that version works fine without issues.
it worked the first two times i launched but then suddenly the controls stopped working only the touchscreen mouse works, any ideas on how to fix this?
Controls stopped working where? In game or just inside the launcher? I would first try to go to the Controller Settings in Steam for that launcher and changing it to Gamepad, or some other configuration that makes sense for you. Could also try removing it from Steam and re-adding it.
Installed it but when I trying to launch max Payne 3 it says that he can’t find rockstar launcher ;(
Have you had this issue?
Not sure what you're doing wrong. It worked for me. I installed GTA V today and played it without issue. I had to set it to use Proton Experimental. After installing GTA V, I had to restart the Rockstar Launcher and it installed DirectX, then I had to restart my Steam Deck once, and after that it worked perfectly. Launch Rockstar Launcher using Proton Experimental, then launch GTA V. Performance is great too. I'll upload a video on this soon.
Yes.
Great thanks for the video
No problem
Would it be possible to install the minecraft launcher? The one that includes both Java and the Windows 10 edition. I know there is a way to play java minecraft but I wanted to know if I could play off of my bedrock account (Windows 10 edition). I know I can install windows 10 on the deck and that would be a easy way to get it but just wondering if it can be done without having to download windows. Would be nice to have everything in one place.
Honestly can't say as I don't own it. You're right about the Windows part though. You could always set up Dual Boot though, or you can even install Windows to an SD Card and just pop that in anytime you want to play it.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay Man, i like that sd card idea. Once again…you are the man!
Minecraft runs great even with mods, PolyMC is one launcher that works. Just make sure to download the Controllable mod for better controller integration
i had to do more research, even though yours was good enough.
For some reason whenever i try to hit play for it to install it just says failed to launch rockstar games launcher exe. I followed instructions exactly so what am I doing wrong
I can't really say without seeing everything you did from start to finish. I would try deleting the download, and starting the entire process from scratch. I would also try different Proton Compatibilities if the one you selected didn't work. If you want an exact answer, make a video of everything you're doing from start to finish, upload it to youtube, and link it to me here and I'll take a look.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay tried one of the other protons, 👍🏾
Why must you add the setup as a Steam game? Can't you just install normally through desktop mode like you would on a computer?
No, because the Steam Deck does not use Microsoft Windows, it uses Linux. Normal Windows .exe files do not run on Linux natively. You have to run them through a Proton layer, and the easiest way to do that is to just add them to Steam as a Non-Steam Game, and set them to use Proton Compatibility in the settings. There are other ways you can do this, such as using a Linux software called Bottles, but for me personally this is the easiest way. That being said, you can always just erase Linux and install Windows on the Steam Deck and then you don't have to do any of these work arounds and everything will work natively, but you will be missing some really cool quality of life features that Valve has added to their Arch Linux fork. So either way has its pros and cons. Personally I prefer to stick with Linux and use Proton. 90% of the things I want to play work fine, and the other 10% I can just stream from my desktop PC if I really need to.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay ah yes I thought it'd be something like that, thanks for clarifying. I haven't been a PC Gamer for some years and the Steam Deck is a little more of a pain in the ass than I'd have hoped. However, once these launchers are set up and I figure out how to import the launchers games individually to Steam (I think Boilr may do this, but maybe not. That's another one I'll need to install. ), it should be pretty smooth sailing from there. Maybe adding a mod or two to some games won't be so bad either but, one step at a time I guess.
after 1:20 my sceen doesnt match yours at all
Same here did you manage to work it out? I still haven’t got beyond this point
Same, no .local
Everything worked until I hit play nothing comes up or opened I even installed red dead as a non steam game and it still didn’t work any fixes?
are you running it using proton experimental or proton 7? if not, try each one and see if it works. also try running it from Steam while in Desktop mode, if you're currently trying it in Gaming Mode.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay I was using the newest proton version it was 20. I had rdr2 online that worked fine and I bought the story mode through the launcher and it just not turning on I tried proton 20 to proton 7 still nothing
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay is it the launch options? I just copied and pasted one of your comments on there
the command is for mounting the sd card to the launcher, in case you want to install the game on your sd card. if you're not installing the sd card, it doesn't matter. to enable proton compatibility, you have to right click Rockstar Launcher in Steam and click 'Properties', then click 'Compatibility', and then click 'Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool', and from the dropdown select either 'Proton Experimental', or the one right below it that says 'Proton 7.0'. Then try running Rockstar Launcher again, and Playing RDR. If that doesn't work, try launching Rockstar Launcher from Steam Desktop instead of Steam Gaming Mode.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay I tried 7.0 and I been in desktop mode the whole time I tried both still no luck i don’t get it. The launcher opens the game just doesn’t open
I've added the launcher through Steam, but it crashes every time I try launching it.
Crashes how? What does it tell you when it crashes? Are you trying it from Desktop Mode or Gaming Mode? I would also try using different Protons. Sometimes one Proton will work and one wont.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay I've tried every version of Proton, versions 5.13-6 to Experimental crash without any error message. After I click "PLAY" it turns to "CANCEL" then back to "PLAY" and doesn't launch. Versions 5.0-10 and below display a generic "An error has occurred. Please make sure all instances of the Rockstar Games Launcher have been closed and try again."
If I launch the installer through Dolphin it works at first, but freezes at "preparing to install" and never installs.
Maybe the installer is corrupted. I would delete it, and try downloading it again. Maybe even that version is bugged for some reason. Could try downloading an older version from here: rockstar-games-launcher.en.uptodown.com/windows/versions and trying an older version of the launcher, then once it installs it will auto update to the latest version. I'm completely guessing here though. I had no issues at all with it.
Another way to install launchers is using a software called Bottles. You can read more about it here: www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/wbyilj/guide_installing_windows_gamesmodslauncher_on/
I'm getting error Code 1 when trying to connect to RGS

Did you find the actual Rockstar Folder? If yes, then at the bottom of that screen where you are selecting a file, you have to click next to File Type and select All Files.
It isn’t launching, could this perhaps be an error with me trying to use the joysticks? Maybe I have to plug in a mouse and keyboard
did you set the compatibility to use Proton? has nothing to do with joysticks / mouse / keyboard. input doesn't affect launch.

Awesome good to hear.
HI thanks for sharing. also can you show us how to delete the Rockstar Launcher. It is not the Rockstar Launcher icon on srteam app, for I want to know the delete real app on Steam Deck no residue.
The process for deleting is the same as for installing. You have to find the directory where it installed, and inside that directory there is typically an uninstall.exe file. You have to find that file, add it to Steam as a Non Steam Game, run it with Proton Compatibility, and it will uninstall. If for whatever reason that file isn't there, you can just delete that Rockstar directory from compatadata manually. If you are familiar with the folder structure of Windows, then you can also look in the standard folders that Windows creates for data, such as ProgramData or Users//Application Data.

My question: In the rockstar launcher I can only press „buy GTA V“ as it does not seem to know that is already installed via epic games. „Scan OC for supported installs does not work either“. Is the problem that I installed via epic? I thin it should work somehow though…😢
if you installed it via epic, then you need to play it via epic. rockstar launcher has no idea what games you installed in epic launcher. they are separate programs and dont communicate with each other. im not sure how epic launcher works, but i know that in steam when you install rockstar games, steam will install rockstar launcher for you specifically for that game. the method in this video is only for games that you have purchased on the rockstar launcher.
Is this all on steam deck? Do I need a pc? Or a computer?
yes, all on the steam deck. no computer needed.

How can i uninstall Rockstar launcher ? Pls do a video
Will this work if I launch gta 4 in experimental then install the rockstar launcher? Or do I have to download the launcher from the browser and set up the files to launch it through steam?
If you have GTA on Steam, you don't need to download Rockstar Launcher separately. It will do everything for you when you launch GTA 4 from Steam.
You only need to install Rockstar Launcher if the game you want to play exists only in Rockstar Launcher and not in Steam.
I have a GTA4 video you can see here: czcams.com/video/7itQX_Ihr7g/video.html
You will see I launch it from Steam and it does everything for me. If I recall correctly, you might have to set it to Proton Experimental before launching though.

So this guide works great to get me the launcher, but every time i finish playing and go to play again, my games are all uninstalled yet they exist in my folders. Any idea what's going on with this?
Is this while the launcher is still opened? Did you try closing it and re-opening it? And are the games installed on an SD card or internal drive?
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay Hi, I installed rockstar launcher to an SD card, how do I proceed to add the Launcher.exe as in the second part of the video? Thanks!
This didn’t work at all. Right from the beginning I don’t get the share part
Thanks for the video, I was able to install and get the launcher to launch and installed RDR2 BUT when I hit play I just stay in the launch and not the game. The game is running, somewhere but it's not popping up. Any suggestions
After further testing, I think it's just the Rockstar Launcher version of RDR2 that may have issues. I downloaded RDR2 directly from Steam, and when you do that it downloads and installs another instance of Rockstar Launcher, and from there it works just fine. So my recommendation to anyone who wants to play RDR2, don't buy it from the Rockstar Store, buy it on Steam.
@@LessTalkMoreGameplay ya thats what I figured too, thanks for the follow up and I guess I'll grab it on sale and figure out how to transfer my save file over to steam from rockstar.
@@garyhartwellii8048 were u able to move ur saves over?
Cause I bought it on rockstar and I don't want all my saves gone
@@TheFakeSlimShady0 if you have cloud saves enabled for the game in the rockstar launcher they'll follow you regardless of platform I think. I purchased it on steam and all my rockstar saves were there when I launched it on steam.
@@garyhartwellii8048 I have cloud saves
Can u still get gta 5 for free without a pc and just using your steam deck
When I press play it just hits a black screen then back to rockstar launcher page.
Any ideas?

@@sadbchparty9466 mine now says the game is playing but can only see rockstar screen 😫 when I try to exit it says are you sure you want to quit game!!!
@@miss_mousepotato3692 omg I found out
I really wanted to get a steam deck but because you have to go through a long process to get gta and rocket league etc i cba.I thought all these games were on steam already but i guess not.I woukd rather get a pc instead.
Don't know why my version was different to install (with files and downloads), but I figured it out. But like Rick famously said "IF GOD EXISTS, ITS F*CKING ME!.
