  • Original soundtrack by Niels Bye Nielsen.
This is a mix of the music that plays in Chongqing (End of an Era). It may differ from the in-game version, include unused parts or be missing other parts.
    Timestamps:
    00:00 - Opening Sequence
    01:19 - Chongqing Requiem (Streets)
04:07 - Hush, the Cyberterrorist (The Block)
    12:51 - Suspicious/Arrested

    22:51 - Target Eliminated
    23:05 - Accessing the Core
    24:08 - Severing Strings
    27:47 - Exfiltration (With Alarm)
    30:53 - Exfiltration (No Alarm)
    33:33 - Exfiltration (Streets)
34:53 - Leaving the District (Level Exit)
    35:05 - Post-Mission Results
Timestamps may be incorrect or incomplete, feel free to correct them in the comments.
Unfortunately the soundtrack is as lacking in content as the level itself.
I decided to add the facility alarm to the background of the exfiltration part, because it perfectly matches the tempo of the song when you play in-game. I also included a clean version without it.

The contrast between the use of the choir in this level vs. Sgail is brilliant. There, it helped emphasize how old and far-reaching Providence was but here it makes the mood more mournful, like a funeral which I guess it was for Diana and 47's relationship with the ICA.

Chongqing is a level about the future.
The future is scary because of the potential implications of advancing technology (Hush and Royce). The future is scary because there seems to be no end to human suffering in sight (the homeless people). The future is scary because it's uncertain (the whistleblowing of the ICA). Yet among all that is the chance, however slim, of a better future.
That's why when you leave the chaotic, burning facility and go into the raining streets and you hear 33:33, it's one of the most awe-inspiringly great pieces in the entire Trilogy's OST as far as I'm concerned. That and the results screen theme capture so perfectly all these mixed emotions about everything that is yet to come. It's scary - some of the roads we may be heading down are downright horrifying - but as one guard says, "That's where we're all headed. Into the future."

    • @matttheheckingweeb3462
      @matttheheckingweeb3462 Před 2 lety +9

Beautifully described! I hadn't thought of this mission as such a metaphor, but when you phrase it the way you did, it makes a lot of sense.
The Streets Exfiltration theme has got to be one of the most beautiful pieces that Nielsen composed for the trilogy. That, as well as the Mission Results theme, I would say, are supposed to represent hope. More specifically, the hope, optimism, and trust in a better future.
In the context of the game, these pieces herald the "New Era." The crimes of Providence and the now-Providence controlled ICA have been exposed to the public--what's done in the dark always comes out in the light. 47 and Hall have dealt a major blow to Providence, allowing 47 and Diana to strike directly at its heart. Ultimately, by the end of the game, the actions of 47, Burnwood, Hall, and Grey have helped usher in this new era of hope--even if they themselves were unknown to the public.
Other tracks from this level represent the future, too. "Chongqing Requiem" conveys the reluctant and sometimes sad feelings of something familiar coming to an end--the "death" of a lifestyle, you could say; the bellowing crescendo of "Severing Strings" represents the turning point of it all--a major event that irreversibly changes everything and sends you hurtling towards the unfamiliar; the Exfiltration and Results theme reassure you that though the unfamiliar can be frightening, it need not be feared.

I love Chongqing's soundtrack. The techno matches the quasi-Cyberpunk vibes of the neon-lit streets of the city very well, while the more somber choirs also sing a final requiem for the ICA.
Niels did an amazing job putting these two very different soundtracks into a single level, and I doubt that many other composers would've been able to pull it off.
In addition to that, you did good work putting the entire thing into a single, lovely mix Salem! Thanks for your great service to the community!

27:47 This will be stuck in my head for a good while - shooting my way out of the ICA facility during core meltdown and everyone on high alert was already intense, and this song just added up to it.
When I finally got outside I was so surprised to see literally every single ICA Data Facility Staff Member outside there. I was already stressed out by combat I faced earlier, so I opened fire without hesitation and then made a run for it. Once on the street I attracted lots of attention due to two weapons I was carrying.

Sneaking around the vents for Royce and climbing to Hust... Man this mission has the most fun "SASO+NO/KO+FIBERWIRE ONLY on master difficult with default loadout" challenge. And the exfiltration music for street when you accomplished feels you like a real hitman.

The combat music in H2 was crap, it was the same track over and over again which was mainly loud and bombastic noises, as opposed to actual music like the combat themes of Contracts and Blood Money. Season 1's wasn't much better than 2's but at least it was different for some maps
H3... haven't noticed yet because I've avoided combat a lot :P But it seems to just be similar to 2, but I wasn't expecting them to do any better

    • @Salem33

@@NotChukkov yeah Hitman 2016's soundtrack wasnt anything special, but I did rather enjoy the ICA facility, Paris, and Colorado themes, and the ICA and Colorado maps by far had the best combat tracks.
I guess with the budget cuts in Hitman 2 they figured you won't be in combat often so they focused their resources elsewhere. Similarly for Hitman 3, but I think Berlin and Chongqing have very good tracks at least. Berlin's exterior and club rave, and Chongqing's ambient and exfiltration themes are really good.
At least the final mission has something for combat since it's basically encouraged to be a kill everyone challenge.

"If you had the money for a _fraction_ of the tech in those, I seriously doubt you'd be standing out here in the rain, right now. Royce is on a big budget and those drones plug right in."

It has only two dynamic area tracks, comparable to Whittleton Creek. And you have to keep in mind that I repeated the exfiltration theme twice just to include alarm sounds.
