So basically, Niantic had actually stealth-released this update in select countries months prior to this and everyone in those countries hated it. However, for the global update, they had to formally announce that the "big change" they had been teasing was a revamp to the character customization.
Their logic was that "we want your avatars to look more like you". That sounds nice, right?
The problem was, their GENIUS idea was to alter everyone's avatars without permission. Why?
So that they could "show off" the new "Body type A / Body type B" customization UI, which got rid of the original anime-inspired customization style and the original UI which had clearly masculine and feminine options. In the process, whoever was in charge of transferring avatar data or editing people's avatars tried to make the male characters look as feminine as possible, and erase any trace of femininity in people's female avatars by getting rid of their chests and hips... but they had not considered how much it would f--k up the model rigging, so almost every character wearing pants looked like they had dropped a turd in their pants on top of the awful redesign.
People who had spent as much as five years tailoring their character to their liking, logged in, booted up the update, only to find their characters looking like that, and even having some of their clothing options altered
You want to know the worst part? Niantic is an official partner of GaymerX, a "gaming consultancy firm" that is not only similar to Sweet Baby Inc. but is also literally not valid under the Section 501. (3c) legislation of the USA, based on Hero Hei's video

I want to play as characters who look attractive and cool. Video games are for escapism, they're not supposed to recreate the bad parts of reality.

No, they got rid of even "Body type A / Body type B" because all that does is censor the words male and female. These people have been arguing that sex is a spectrum, so Type A and Type B has to go. Pokemon removed the two separate models for the two sexes and replaced them with one unisex model with sliders. This represents the sex spectrum.

The "something to it" is that they removed gender. You no longer pick a Male or Female body. Now there is just a generic body and some sliders to increase fatness and breast size. But no sliders for hip width, waist width, or shoulder width. So everyone has male hips/waist/shoulders because removing gender usually just means removing women.
There's definitely a hip and shoulder slider, waist is the only key one that's missing.
For some reason everytime there shall be equality it ends up with removing women. The future is male because everyone will be males.

I get adding new body types in, but changing existing ones seems like a scam, especially if players had paid for them with time and/or money.
Players didn't pay for body types before, only clothes, new update gave players more options than two body types by making weight, bust, hips, muscle on sliders and removing the gender toggle. There used to be clothes that only one gender could wear but now every model can use all clothes and if you want to be female you slide the breast and ass sliders all the way up. There's no male/female toggle now, just a single character model, the sliders are new. There's no waist slider, so people can't get female models with a waist as narrow as the old female model, the bust and hip slider can go bigger/smaller than the old model though.
The reason they look like this is everyone is the same ugly blob now. They made sliders that can't translate what characters looked like before so everyone got autoupdated to be hideous. Even if you attempt to make a 'female' body with as close as you can get the sliders they will still have the same animation set as the 'male' body and walk around like a troglodyte. So by trying to make everyone different they literally made everyone exactly the same. The irony is off the charts.

As someone who still plays pogo, they added the feature to change between like 10 body types. But none of the models were coded to support anything but that original model, so no matter what option you pick, its just horrific and ugly.

There used to be a fixed model for male/female. They removed the gender toggle and switched to sliders for everything, so female models have the stocky waist because they share a model with the guy models and there's no waist slider. The new bust slider can go bigger than the old model, and they added a weight slider so fat people playing a fitness app can proudly show off how little progress they've made on losing weight.
That's what they say, but in reality they're catering to fat women who feel bad about pokemon go avatars looking slimmer than them.
The guy models look the same. As in, there isn't a male/female model. There is one model. So the guys look... better, in that they're not as ludicrously hideous if you think of the avatar as a guy and try to make a guy but any girl you try to make will look like an ugly dude pretending to be a girl because that is almost literally exactly what they are. Even with that there's a bunch of other stuff that's scuffed like hair being a mess when it interacts with hats, character skin clipping through clothes since it's all sliders and transforms, and wearing headphones caves your character's skull in.

My mom, my actual 63-year old mother, complained about this to me. She used Nami from One Piece (we haven’t gotten to the Fishman Island Arc, so pre timeskip Nami, but still) as an example of something that should be an option for female character models. She also complained that every option for skin tone was flat, as if someone has used the bucket fill option in MS Paint.

Extra customization options are good, but not being able to change your character to what you had before is bad.
Yeah, that's what a lot of people don't get. The side by side pictures in the video are what the avatars were auto-converted into under the new system. You can't go back.

yep this 100% as a person who used to be fat when I was a teen, I would always make my characters super skinny because I was insecure. maybe some like it but atleast make it an option, especially not change already made characters or be forced that way.

Exactly, character customization is to let people make a character look how they want, immersion doesn't necessarily mean realism. Just because I'm sometimes feeling too lazy to shave that doesn't mean I want a mustache on my game character, and in the same way I bet even the most vocal "body positivity" people would choose to be slim if they could do it with the press of a button. They may say that it's fine but come on, who wouldn't say no to better looks.

Generally, when people make characters they either like to look like an idealized human, or they want to look abjectly hideous for a joke. The longer you don't log in, your avatar gains weight and pokemon occasionally missing from your inventory.
To get your avatar back to normal you have to walk around and log in more regularly.

There is something to it. Activists inside the company. They want characters to be more gender ambiguous and they managed to convince the higher ups that people want that. Usually they even get away with it and chalk up the negative feedback to "a few misogynist trolls", but i think this time the backlash is too big to ignore. Someone is getting fired.

The irony is that games like Helldivers who actively distance themselves from this madness will get even more popular. These people somehow forgot that "Cash leads the way, and it doesn't care whats wrong or right". We don't have people in the office go "Oh yea i love porn! The question these companies need to ask themselves is: Do we want 2000 twitter users be "insulted" for a month about our game or do we want to keep +200 000 players?

The skirt glitches out because it was programmed for different dimensions. They didn't even bother to adjust it.
It's adjusted a bit, it works in most character poses on max weight but the surfer pose with max weight slider was apparently not among the tested configurations
Is this just additional body options or are they replacing existing options? Because if it was just more options than it's a good thing rather than a bad thing.

They added more customization features that let you change your characters measurements, its possible to make the avatar as skinny,chunky,girly,manly oreven just look like the defaults we had before, complete with booty &booba sliders👌

To be clear: this is not what companies think gamers like. They know that we explicitly don't want it, but significant money comes in from firms that I suspect are connected to multinational organizations that follow UN guidelines and such that say having distinct representations in games of one sex or the other is harmful and bigoted. This kind of change comes down from the top, so I'd investigate the ESRB or relevant games rating organization as a start to figure out why this is really happening. How do they get their policies and guidelines etc (probably from the world government)
