Squatters rights is honestly the dumbest law I’ve ever heard
I'm a non-American and this law does not exist in my country. What the actual fuck? So someone can just start living in your house and then you lose the house???? It's literally capture the flag.
She has documents to show she owns the house, he has no documents to show he is renting or any thing he should be thrown out. My god its clear cut NY you are messed up.

In France its the same thing, for instance if you were to go on a couple weeks vacation and come back with people in your house, they are allowed to stay inside and you can't do anything about it, (especially if they changed the locks or did some renovations).
Squatters shouldn't have rights and should be considered trespassing with no exceptions.

A woman was murdered in NY by squatters that were illegal immigrants. Her mother had passed away and she went to her mother's house to take care of some things and found squatters inside and was murdered. This shit is crazy.
So all she needs to do is walk into the NY mayors home and claim squatters rights and call the police on her self with a whole news crew.
the house owner can try to lease the house to her family member with a lease agreement. squatters are not going to have the paper evidences that they lived there over 30 days. let your relative with the lease call the police, tell them that someone broke into the house while you were on a vacation for a week or so. then it will be a "tenant to tenant" issue.
Squatters rights were meant to prevent tenants from being illegally evicted without notice or breaking the lease. The problem is the laws are so heavily skewed in favor of the tenants that landlords end up in situations like this where people flat out refuse to leave.
You know whats wild? Its easier to steal someones house "legally" than it is to register an abandoned vehicle from 1937 to yourself.
Why are squatters rights even a thing? It's like giving thieves the right to ownership to the stolen item
This happens in Spain and I'd say it's even worst.
