I don’t play any games that require anti cheat, so Steam Deck wins out for me. Steam OS (and steam input controls) is just so convenient. I ordered my oled 1TB on Christmas Eve. Can’t wait to get it in time for my birthday in January 😊
Only online games I play have been updated for easy anti cheat on Linux/steam deck like for instance, battlebit remastered, Halo MCC, Elden Ring, and dead by daylight. Many others support easy anti cheat but not everyone unfortunately.
Still the main games I play online work great so easy steam deck for me. And that battery life though
btw even anticheats is supported on steam deck, companies only need to press a switch, it isn't even hard

i got the steam deck oled 1tb limited edition too and i cant put it down this thing is amazing and the colors really pop, it has now completely replaced my ps5 and xbox series x since i got it lol
As much as I love the Legion Go I prefer the simplicity of steam os don’t get me wrong I like tinkering around on windows but after a busy day I just want to jump straight into a game and I haven’t got to worry searching around for drivers/updates the steam deck oled just has it all with one press of a button. I think that’s why I tend to stick with a console like experiences it just works out of the box.
With Steam Big Picture on Windows, you can achieve as close to that console-like experience. From waking the Legion Go from hibernation and swiping up from the Lock Screen without entering a passcode, and jumping right into a game, it takes me about 10-15 seconds to be ready. Updating drivers and bios is a once in a while chore, but the day to day flow of gameplay with Steam Big Picture, is as close to a console setup as I can find.
And for me, it’s worth it so I can play the games that I couldn’t play without a dual boot of windows on the Steam Dec.
I got my Legion Go to boot in 5 seconds flat once I got rid of the windows bloat and optimise it to the way I like it but even with it set to balance/efficiency the battery tends not to last that long and I feel like I’m always checking the battery every 30 mins or so. I really like the device but I like the display/battery more on the oled. I would say the legion go is the best windows portable device for gaming on the go other than the steam deck.

I think the Steam Deck, particularly the OLED model is the better device overall. However since a few popular multiplayer games don't work on Linux via Proton like COD, Destiny 2, or Fortnite, (yet) if your potential enjoyment hinges upon your ability to play these games, you'll probably be happier with the Ally or Legion Go.
Also if you're the type to get anxiety about not having the "best" or "fastest" available. The Ally and Legion Go are technically faster than the Steam Deck, and that might alleviate some of that anxiety. For some folks though nothing short of full-powered desktop performance will suffice, and these people probably shouldn't get a handheld at all. The Z1 Extreme chip in these devices can be pushed further than the Deck's custom SOC, but it's to the detriment of everything else. The Ally can run at 30 watts, but you'll get 40 minutes of battery life and you'll cook your SD card in the process.
The Deck is an extremely balanced device in comparison. Everything about it feels like a careful and deliberate decision was made, from it's SOC performance and TDP, to it's screen resolution, button placement, shape, size, etc.

Been remote playing from my PS5 and PC for a few months on my LCD Steam Deck (have a well set up ethernet network around my house so it works flawlessly) and I love doing it so much I've ordered the OLED Deck,

The LeGO just had a few major jumps in performance with firmware updates, so it will get better. I haven't had any issues performance wise so far :D
16:04 regrading hdr support its a linix issue and work have been going around and have progressed close to finish. Kde(steam decks desktop mode) will support hdr(properly) with plasma 6 update, which will go live around the end of February.

I think for ease of everything 2tb is more than enough. It’s not hard to do the 2280 mod but for me I’d rather use that 4tb on my desktop.

thank you for a very informative video. I am 62 years old Switch oed owner and happy with that, mostly because Company of heroes came to it and it really is art itself. Steam Deck suppouslly can play all 3 Company of heroes and many more.
Great video. My go to is the Legion Go, I have a Steam Deck I no longer use because of the limitations of Linux. Windows has it's issues on handhelds, but it's work it for compatibility.
The reason for the LCD deck having better frame rates when set to 10W vs the OLED model is that the TDP setting is not setting total system power, and it doesn't really match for the two consoles. If you match actual power used, the OLED always comes out on top. To match it you have to look at the total power used in the performance overlay and experiment until they match (or as close as you can get).
Someone explained there is no standard way to measure TDP. When you set the TDP to 15 watts the cpu and gpu is spiking up and down hopefully averaging 15 tdp. For example for a few ms the Apu used 5 watts then uses 25 watts trying to average 15 TDP. The gpu wattage spikes more than the cpu.
The reason the LCD model gets a little better performance at low TDP is because the GPU is allowed to spike to higher watt for split second more than the OLED model. The OLED model limits more how much the GPU can spike. This means the OLED Model measures 10 TDP more accurately than the LCD model.
With the higher gpu wattage spites at 5 TDP and 10 TDP the APU can't get low enough to "repay" back to the average. Thus the average ends up being a watt or two higher than the setting on the LCD model. The OLED model apu is more efficient and cooler increasing the battery life.

I'm currently deciding which device to get and after looking into the subject for a few days now, I think that the Steam Deck is the better choice for me. If I want full power, I'll use my gaming PC and if I want to play on the move, I'd rather use a device where I can really be mobile for longer. The Steam Deck clearly has more battery. I don't want to play from plug socket to plug socket. :D
But I'm happy that there are so many devices out there, that stimulates the market and, in the best case, keeps giving us new and better versions at good prices. :)
The only reason why I didn't buy the Limited Steam Deck Oled was because of the Etched Display, I really love the way the Limited SD Oled looks, but I don't like the etched display on my 512gb LCD SD, really wish they gave an option to choose. I went with the 512gb OLED instead and will upgrade the SSD. Glossy looks so much better and get lets fingerprints and it's much easier to clean.
You could have just added an aftermarket screen protector to it and the etching basically goes away. I use the thing in my car while on lunch so, idk.
Do u think it was worth upgrading from the LCD. Iv been thinking about it for ages. U will be the deciding vote.

The OLED display will be a night and day difference, like seriously, it will be like you are playing video games again and feel "next Gen"
The battery life of the OLED is so so much better, at 90hz/fps it gives me 1-1:30 more compared to the LCD and locked at 60hz/fps it doubles the battery life compared to the LCD.
The trackpad haptics are way better too, so much refine and it will be a quality of life improvement.
And, the most important things that I haven't seen anyone mention, is how smooth the OS and the UI feels. I know that the display is 90hz, but it doesn't have to do with it, the OS itself just feels really smooth without any stuttering or frame drops like I get on my LCD Deck.
And, the increased screen size is noticeable too and much much better than the LCD screen size.
Hope it helps, I say it's 100% worth upgrading.
I recommend you get the 512gb version, and upgrade to a 2tb SSD for $150 and you will end up paying the same price of the 1tb SSD, also, the glossy is just so much better than the etched version, and, you could always get an etched screen protector for the glossy SD.
Dang, you really think the etched glass is not as good as the glossy? I mean, I guess I'll have a screen protector on either way, but no I'm confused haha.
@Ditronus. I've heard both sides, though nobody has compared them side by side. For the most part, what I understand is that the glossy seems preferred. I guess my next goal is to look for a video comparing it 😆 I've already got the 512gb, I didn't know about the different screens pre purchase. I digress, as he said, you can always get an etched screen protector.
it's been a great year for handhelds and honestly could be the future of "mobile" gaming instead of gaming laptops.
also, UI experience/software personally is superior to new hardware and Valve still proving that with steamOS 2 years on but really glad to see improvements in ally and go
Team gaming indeed. I'm so glad to hear people say they prefer the symmetrical sticks on the 'Deck than and Steam OS are the factors that are driving me to save for an OLED now over the others. The majority of my Steam titles _aren't_ AAA games, so the 'Deck will probably last me into 2026.

Great video! Regarding the TDP differences at 10w between the Steam Deck LCD and OLED, the Phawx youtube channel did a great breakdown explaining how the reported TDPs between LCD and OLED Deck are slightly different (10w TDP on OLED is actually using less energy than 10w TDP on LCD and is probably more equivalent to 11w). The OLED 6nm APU is more efficient at all TDP ranges.

The deal breaker for me for the Viture was the proprietary connector. If they had an adapter to use other usb c dp alt cables then that would have been ok but I went with the Xreal instead.
I love my viture but I also ordered them a long time ago in early kickstarter.
Great video. I’m still on the fence on which system I want. Deck oled is what I think I want. The clunkyness of windows on a portable isn’t for me. But the Legion Go is compelling with that large screen.
Awesome video. I got a steam deck lcd when they dropped and then got the ROG ally shortly after it dropped . My pc I built uses a 7800x3D and 4090 so I love the extra performance the ally gives but the sleep/resume function of the deck keeps me using it almost as much as the ally . Trying to get my wife to migrate from the switch to the deck so I can maybe upgrade when newer more powerful handhelds come out without feeling like I need to sell my Og steam deck with the kill switch
I just oredered the 1TB Oled after selling my 64g LCD to a friend after about 6 months of use. I was overall very happy with the LCD but the better screen, battery life, and performance of the Oled was very appealing. I use my Deck mainly in handheld with occasional docking to a 50" tv. I have also been using my Xreal Air glasses with the Deck and it's a very good pairing imo.
Im glad there is healthy competition now with these handhelds so us as gamers can reap the benefits!
Using the oled switch for so long, I couldn't ever go back to anything less than Oled when gaming in handheld. SteamDeck is the clear winner!
Great comparison! The HDR issue with Spiderman 2 isn't unique to the Steam Deck, the same problem exists on HDR panels on PC. The HDR color space isn't done correctly.

I myself am just getting into pc handhelds. Just got back into gaming a year ago and in been rolling with a Switch OLED and Xbox X, but the idea of playing AAA games on the go is huge, so right now I’m looking at all 3. I think the Steam Deck OLED might be the best for me to get my feet wet since the Ally and Legion Go seem to be more complicated to get up and running.
Just look at what games you want to play and do a reality check first. The Deck is running Linux, and although compatibility is very good, not every game runs. I would say 70% of games on Steam "just work". Another 20% work fine with some tweaking. The remaining 10% doesn't work... yet. Proton is ever evolving, and what doesn't work today may very well work tomorrow. Still, if your potential enjoyment hinges upon whether you can or cannot play one or more of these incompatible games, some of which are popular multiplayer titles like Fortnite or Destiny 2, then it won't matter how good it is. You will be disappointed. It will be like owning a Playstation when all you really want to do is play Halo.
If doing some updates on a Windows device is complicated then ...the issue is on your side.

Really stuck in deciding which one to get. I like the better performance, native game pass setup, and button/stick layout of the Ally. I like the oled, better battery, and UI of the deck. I'm at a loss here. Kinda comes down to how close to native-y i can get gamepass on the steam deck and/or how well either of them run games (fps/resolution/battery) at medium settings.
Heard a lot of people say Ally is less favored since its main strength is the better performance at high draws, but that leaves you with sub 1 hour battery; yet, ive heard others say they can get decent mileage of battery at medium settings and stuf no problem. No idea. Might buy em both to try them out (although i kinda dread running comparison tests and setting them up) to make a decision. Might just opt out of both since i have a lenovo legion gaming laptop anyways that doesnt get much action.

It sounds like the Ally Z1 Ex may be the best 1st test drive for you, given your preference for its layout and the much easier return process with Best Buy. It sounds like you’re really after GP local play and Steam Big Picture will help with the console feel as well. But if you’re not completely in love with it in the 1st week, you know what to do ;). I think that would be a less stressful approach vs buying them both up at once.
Remote play your gaming laptop Its fantastic. I’m currently doing that with my g14 hooked up to ethernet as your right, around the holidays, and outside school, my laptop barely gets preferred

@@Ditronus. so one can use either two clients from the pc, Nvidias game steam in Nvidia Geforce experience or sunshine, setting up is either a installation (sunshine) or turning on in the setting (moonlight) after that, i just easily install moonlight specifically on the steam deck by with help from various youtube tutorials and I’m good to go. With ethernet and a modern router, latency is very much manageable and image quality is close to native. Then there’s PlayStation remote play one can do from ps4/5 to the steam deck. Id recommend a yt tutorial for both remote processes. Currently I’m playing starfield

I dont own a ps4, Ill mostly be playing plugged in on the couch. For that reason it sounds like the vote is to go with the rog ally. I was considering the steam deck but it sounds like Ill have sub par frames and game availability and I dont want to do that. Thoughts?
The Rog ally for you is the right choice if you are planning to play it plugged most of the time. Steam deck is more for people that travel more & uses it to play less demanding retro games.
As far as I know, VibrantDeck is broken after update 3.5, so you can't further crank up the saturation that way.

Completely agreed about the OLED Deck at 10-15W, I love mine. It feels the most console-like and is an amazing portable companion with the etched glass. I can grab a few minutes of a game anywhere. For people without a gaming PC or who play games with rootkit kernel anticheat or who prefer to rent games, Ally is a great choice with VRR.

Just bought the OLED. If I wanna play with the best performance and graphics I take my gaming PC. But if I want to play in the bed or on the go the Steam Deck is way ahead of the other two because of the better power usage 🤷♂️

Exactly. I've got a gaming PC and gaming laptop that blow the ROG out of the water. If I want higher performance, I have options. If I want a mobile handheld, I have the best one with SD OLED. Just the comparison showing these systems running at 15w should show you all you need to know. And the 50% battery life that comes with that.

The reason the LCD deck comes out on top regularly is because Valve doesn't actually limit the power of the APU when you define a custom TDP, the Phawx discovered this some time ago. Even the new deck isn't quite running with a hard wattage limit of 15w at the 15w TDP setting, it'll typically pull closer to 18w in most cases where the old deck pulled close to 21w. With the deck LCD running at 15w and the Ally running at 15w the Ally has 15 minutes (~20%) more battery life than the deck despite them having the same battery capacity, so if the new deck didn't have a 50wh battery then it'd likely be dead even for vitality with the Ally. The Ally likely does hard limit the APU to whatever the power setting is, that's the only reasonable way to actually explain how the deck performs better in lower TDP scenarios because the Ally's CPU cores can be parked and having more CUs on the GPU just means they will run at marginally lower clocks and deliver significantly better performance overall in all cases, and that's before even considering lithography advantages.

I will generally play it in my bed , on the toilet and plan on docking it and hooking it up to my tv for a console like experience, what’s the best one for me ? Ally or deck ? Price isn’t a big deal , I would like to add though I have most of my games on steam but I know I can run steam on the ally

Steam deck OLED is the Best. The other ones are cool too, but whatever anyone chooses , it’s VALVE that everyone gets, valve is Pro Customer, you don’t see that anymore.
I think I’m leaning more towards rog ally. I’m only using it as a switch replacement so it’ll be dock most its life. I play mostly steam games roguelite and party games. Bluetooth 5.3 is very compelling on the deck oled because I like party games of 6 players. But I can get rog ally for $400 versus $500 for deck oled.
after having all 3 i just cant seem to prefer the deck or legion go over the Ally, gonna get a refund soon on my legion go from bestbuy, its just too clunky and uncomfortable for me while giving me identical performance as my Ally
Steam oled here. Best choice for me, don’t need the most powerful as I only play older/roguelike/emulation games on mine. The epic stuff that requires power rather play on my 4090 rig in ultrawide.
I still trying to decide between the ROG Ally vs the Deck oled. The only thing that is pushing me to the ROG ally is the anti cheat.
this is so tough. im gonna be a dad later this year and i need to get away / unchained from my desk. at the same time, i want the performance of the ally. I bought a steamdeck OLED which should be here tomorrow but im just not sure about my choice. im sure id use it plugged in often, but i also see myself forgetting to plug it in and also being irked when the ally's battery dies on me. the need to be tethered to power seems to defeat the purpose of a handheld. i also worry that the turbo 30W mode of the ally would hurt the battery if you just use it that way all the time. i wish the steamdeck had a turbo 30W mode where it kicked butt. just not sure i made the right choice here.

@@bobtheraccoon318 took about 3 and a half weeks. enough time for me to consider the ally and then get my steam deck and be happy with it. the ally only works better than the SD when its plugged in, which makes the ally either a good handheld, or a shitty laptop depending on how you view it. the SD also has extreme battery life. youll be happy with your purchase. i havent used the track pads too much but they also dont get in the way. the screen is great, fun device.
i only bought the 512gb oled because the etched glass was going to annoy me... i mean i am the type of guy that notices a single dead pixel on a densely packed pixel on a screen.... so hearing about the horrors of the etched glass was a quick decision for me to get the 512gb model and i had to buy another case for a more smaller portable use....
Lenovo legion go and Rog ally is a rent n car payment, Steam Deck and Logitech g cloud is fine for me
If you are a console person the Steam Deck is the only choice. I have chosen the windows path myself and don’t mind playing with settings and working with Windows. For those who have not played games on a pc think hard before you choose.
Valve is Telling you that the boe etched glass panel is better than the Samsung glossy that’s why there is no option
Nah Boe panel has had more dead pixels than the samsung panels. They both look gorgeous though.

This video is a nice analysis of the 3, but fails to talk about a huge advantage the Ally has vs the competition: VRR. I had a Steam Deck LCD for a year and it was good for the most part. Never liked playing higher demanding games at 30-45fps and low settings. Bought an Z1 Extreme Ally a few weeks ago and VRR is SUCH A HUGE UPGRADE. Even the OLED Deck will not keep any slightly demanding games at 90hz at a constant 90fps. And after using the Ally's 120hz (90hz will be so close in perceived fluidity), the 60fps mark is nauseating of the LCD Deck. I don't care about HDR nor battery life, so the Ally scores it big for me. And I can run games at medium to high settings at either 21w or 24w to get the most out of it.
I got my ally and waited a week befofe i took a deep breath and used an sd card and its broken lmao. Bu5 good new is its just the reader but i dont care. Sd was extremely slow transferring when i was on stead deck so ill jus5 grab a big ssd and be fine
Can you imagine how bad the pixels are on those 1080p glasses? Avoid them without question.

It has been demonstrated that the LCD version doesn't really lock TDP at 10 W while the OLED does. So it's like LCD can jump higher where needed, while OLED really stay at 10.

Steam Deck is for those who actually want the most "consolized" PC experience. If so, you should go at once with the Deck.
When it comes to the Windows OS handhelds, I will go with ROG Ally for these reasons:
1. (And most important) VRR. When one plays on a handheld like this, where your frame rates are dropping and lifting, VRR makes your session of gaming smooth and easier. You dont have to be toggling Hz of the display and more. Leave the fps uncapped and play.
2. Weigh and size: Legion Go is way more bigger and its weight is too much for a handheld in my opinion.
3. Smaller screen: a 1600p big screen will make 720p, 900p and even some 1080p games blurry due to pixel density.
4. Armoury Crate is better as of now.
5. GO speakers are upside. Really weird decision.
At the end, choose the one you prefer the most and let's game!

It literally is the main reason. Also no real sleep function like the SD. These little things matter a lot, just hitting the power button and resuming the game later like SD.
I ultimately picked Rog because I'm hoping there'll be some sort of community battery mod (better, more official than what's on Reddit). Also going to assume some unnamed hero will perfect a linux port for Rog...

@strahd462 not really, still makes it way smaller than anything else your going to be able to game on even with the battery pack. Your never going to use this walking around. So just having an additional battery back with it really makes no different. It's not like it fits in your pocket either.

I've had both. Your not dealing with a ton of performance on these handhelds. So it has to be the ally all the way for me. I like to do alot of emulation and the steam deck does struggle alot in ways the ally doesn't, especially with Wii u/switch games

I think where Valve wins out with the Steam Deck is the entire package and quality control, basically, the Steam Deck feels like a hybrid PC/console, with the openness of the PC and much of the ease of use of consoles, the rivals are more or less generic PC's with all the problems that come with that, that's fine for PC gamers or gamers that are fine with tinkering, but most gamers just want to pick up and play, and the Deck is the closes we've got to that in PC form.
Price and battery life is another important factor, the original Deck was pushing to the limits on battery life for me, the OLED Deck is giving a good balance of performance and battery life and as much as I would love to have more performance on these portable devices, battery life comes first and historically speaking, weaker portable gaming devices have done better than more powerful ones over the decades because of battery life and I think Valve made the right decision to not boost the specs just yet, but I do think Valve will need a Deck 2 by 2025 or a major price cut or they could get left behind by rivals.
The irony is, the Legion Go and ROG would be more appealing if they had SteamOS on it, which says a lot with how good SteamOS is that a lot of us prefer to use a Linux OS to run Windows games.
As for anti cheats, a lot more of those games work on the Deck then they did 2 years ago, but there are still many that don't, but honestly, competitive gaming is the last kind of game I would want to play on a portable device so it's not a big deal for me, especially because I game differently on portable devices then on my gaming rig, where it's pick up and go, play a bit and so on, whereas on my gaming rig, it's more like maxing everything out, not wanting to be disturbed by others and putting more focus in what I'm doing, I suspect it's the same for many others that it's more lighter like gaming on portable devices compared to what I would play on my gaming rig, and I don't mean in how demanding a game is, but the style of game and for me, the Steam Deck hits the right balance.
Also, I think with the current battery tech that we've got, 15 watts is a better match for battery life, 20 watts if there's a bigger battery, beyond that and I don't see the point unless it's being used in dock mode, which kinda defeats the purpose of why I would want to buy any of these devices, Valve got it right by targeting 15 watts, if battery tech gets better or cheaper, that could change to 20 watts or more, but until then, 15 watts clearly wins out, especially if the hardware targets that, probably why the Deck gets more performance at 15 watts over the more powerful rivals, which means those rivals are more powerful if you force more juice into them, which is a big no no to me, as it becomes far less portable.

Actually the decision is so much simpler : wanna play Mario or a completely stripped down version of a AAA game? Get the Steam Deck. Wanna play a AAA game properly? Get the Ally! Simple as that really. I saw the Steam Deck and apart from very very VERY few games the graphics is....meh to say the least. You can see the limitations of a really old chip . Why would I wanna do that? Battery? Screw that, I already have a 20A powerbank , I just hook it up to my Ally, it has bypass charging and I can play on the go. Also most of the times I'm playing at home so the original charger is nearby.
The single real advantage now is the OLED display, even the best LCD display cannot match the contrast and color saturation of an OLED, if my Ally had an OLED display it would have been a 10/10 device.
